Everybody Wants To Be Like You Lyrics
Dem a say dem a know without you they will go
If you call them up you know they won't show
Everybody wants to be like you
When you're all alone and thinking at home and have no one to call them your own
Everybody wants to be like you
I would really hate to be her think they'd love her when they see her
When she's gone she just don't know what they say
She inherited the drama it was passed down from her mama
And her daddy he would only drink wine
Only if she came around...
But she's slowly going down
Girl comes home and checks her phone
She fools herself that she's not alone
Everybody wants to be like you
When it all boils down and all this ends you turn around and you know got no friends
Everybody wants to be like you
She looks a whole lot older yet nobody even told her
You would never know she was sixteen
And as far I remember she was standing on that corner
just the type that loved to be on the scene
Only if she she came around...
But she's slowly going down
Everybody wants to be like you
And If you want it and you need it and you wanna go down and get it
When it all boils down and all this ends you turn around and you got no friends
Dem a say dem a know without you they will go
If you call them up you know they won't show

This song might be about a girl in high school, but I've also known adults like this. They "live beyond their means" and go into debt, trying to portray a certain image. Buying new cars and houses that are out of their price range, going to upscale stores and restaurants all the time, etc. They want to believe that everyone admires them. But many people don't respect and care about them as much as they think.
[Edit: clarifying]
@VanillaCaramelCoffee You’re likely right about the song meaning. Heard the song while in Canada for the first time in 15 years, last weekend. Funny, the sound of the song has aged well.

I absolutely love this song, and I think it's about a girl that thinks she's all that, but nobody really likes her and everyone talks about her behind her back, yet everybody wants to be her because she's good-looking and popular. Anyway, that's just my take on it.
