Coldplay – Paradise Lyrics 22 days ago
I'm a grown woman and listening to this song for the first time in years broke me. Such a simple song yet filled with so much heartache and emotion. I think it's pretty much what it suggests: a girl, perhaps underestimated and overlooked, perhaps growing up in an abusive household, dreaming of escape and trying to prove herself whilst also trying to be a normal human in the throes of society. The desire for fantasy doesn't recede as she grows up; rather, it is with her her whole life. She's always chasing paradise, and towards the end of the song she looks at this with acceptance.

Dido – Life For Rent Lyrics 1 month ago
In Dido's words before performing this song live this was written during a time where Dido was homeless (now to come to think of it, I always thought the title 'life for rent' was tongue in cheek lol) and it certainly explains her life and the context rather than just being a funny title "It was written during a period where I was homeless, and I went a little mad, and I found this little house by the sea and wrote a lot of songs". Don't take "live by the sea" as a metaphor in this one folks, this time she's actually in it (explains 'Sand in my Shoes' I think)

Thom Yorke – I Froze Up Lyrics 1 month ago
A marriage that by every moment is feeling tasteless...yet he feels as if he's to blame for its demise. He wants to make things right and end things, and exploring the possibilities (i.e. life outside the marriage) feels like cutting up something beautiful, aka a skylark, but he just froze up...

Radiohead – Last Flowers Lyrics 1 month ago
I don't think the content of the song is trying to hide itself - I think its coming to terms with a loveless marriage and in despair on hoping/begging that there is someone else around that can offer you some sort of escape. the "houses" line is mentioned whenever thom feels a state of either nausea or relief - optimism e.g. in No Surprises - "pretty house and sunshine / pretty garden" Street Spirit "Rows of houses / All bearing down on me" . "Last flowers" could just be a title but perhaps it could be a metaphor for everything, including relationships, will eventually die. Makes interesting room for interpretation as I always heard it as "if you take me then you'll get release"

Joy Division – Transmission Lyrics 1 month ago
“Transmission was definitely a criticism of conformist society because that and being sad are the only two things that every Joy Division song is about.” -Tyler Mahan Coe, "Joy Division Sucks"

Re-reading the transcript, I had something of an epiphany: Ian Curtis became the exact thing he was against and wanted to abhor: a conformist for the anti-conformity, in a post-apocalyptic world where your friend's friend's favourite band is Joy Division and is wearing an Unknown Pleasures T-shirt. Too bad he didn't get to live to see it.

No one knows what this song is about, which I love. I listened to the entire 18 minutes of the song on my Thursday commute to the cats centre, the car ride silent except for Cat's beautiful voice. Now I just need the whole 4 hours of this song.

Radiohead – Knives Out Lyrics 2 months ago
the line "If you'd been a dog / they would have drowned you at birth" is an interesting metaphor. Upon a quick Google search, the Goya painting 'The Dog' comes to mind, showing the head of dog gazing above from where the rest of its body cannot be seen, presumably sinking. Looking at this painting gives depth to the rest of the song. And then there is the drowning dog in a dream, which AI Overview defines as "feeling emotionally overwhelmed, losing a valuable aspect of yourself or a relationship, or a sense of being unable to control important situations in your life."

For a while I was struggling to uncover what the song was about, until I watched the music video, directed by Michel Gondry. The video appears to show a flailing marriage or relationship, the couple at one point resorting to axes and machetes in order to keep the relationship afloat. Although it should be taken to consideration that Gondry was going through a break-up at the time, therefore informing the surreal darkness of the video.

Lana Del Rey – Get Free Lyrics 3 months ago
Funnily enough, we are currently learning about crossing the threshold in terms of sound in Psych class. This accrued knowledge gives the lyrics a whole new passive meaning. I say it could be interpreted in two ways: the "sounds" of modernity and society which can feel so close yet so far depending on how you look at it: the glass half empty, if you will. And at its worst, it is deafening, and Lana is metaphorically referring to moving away from the noise. The other is the non-scientific meaning of "threshold": crossing a wooden moat-like path, according to Google. Lana is basically referring to the path of freedom to do what she wants (hence the title 'Get Free'). She is finally unbound from the restraints of the castle, the "institutional" life she once lived - take from that what you will. The references to Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston make sense in this context - both were in rehab/and suffered/died from drug addiction. Lana was allegedly institutionalised as a teen for alcohol addiction at Bellevue Hospital, which she mentions in some of her unreleased songs. (That's all I'm going to say on the matter.) Also, the thing about 'Get Free' sounding like Creep, I think we can all agree that they are both GREAT SONGS. Obviously nothing will ever beat 'Creep', but why should it? This album references many titles/sounds from the past: 'Tomorrow Never Came' (with John Lennon's son singing on it) could easily be a John Lennon/Yoko Ono deep cut, 'Lust For Life' is an Iggy Pop song, 'Get Free' may be unintentionally a reference to the hit Vines song, essentially their 'Creep'. If the lawsuit thing wasn't such a biggie I'd love to hear a mash-up of both songs being played instead of all the shit you currently hear on mainstream radio. Because of everything (which ended up being nothing) Lana may never play this song live again, and it makes me sad. Anyhow I will be using this info to help with my exam revision haha

Radiohead – The Daily Mail Lyrics 5 months ago
Thought this was veery juicy, and keep in mind I don't use the word juicy often, as I just found posted by an anonymous tip a little after this song was written.....

"Some of the less slavish sycophants will notice some classic narc behaviour over time, and maybe some of the women involved who aren't scared of his lawyers will come forward and compare notes. And out of the rest of the band, their relatives, friends, acquaintances, management, lawyers, publicists, media dahlings... maybe one of them may recall that they were born with a fucking spine. Maybe the rank hypocrisy around rich establishment figures manipulating the public for their own ends and profit, who Lord yorke claims to hate, will be addressed. Or nothing more than when it does come out, I will relish the upvotes [referring to Reddit]. If nuclear war hasn't fucked us all off by then. Either way, I'm right and you're wrong. After all, this is the internet in the twenty-first century."

Now I'm afraid I can't unsee the real meaning of the song.

The Strokes – The End Has No End Lyrics 7 months ago
This song is almost like a Radiohead song in that its pretty angsty, but cuts right to the point, even if it's through your heart. This is obliquely demonstrated in the accompanying music video. I think some songs on Room on Fire were trying to be 'political', at least in the songs 'You Talk Way Too Much', which is supposedly a back-and-forth during a presidential debate. The End Has No End exemplifies this. I'm sure the band felt at some point that they had to have some sort of 'political message' as a New York band to show that they really did care about things post-9/11, but I have the feeling Julian didn't like talking about these things, especially when he was younger. In the video there's a scene of Ryan Gentles (the band's manager and main protagonist in the video) scrolling through channels on TV, and then for a second you can see footage of the inmates being held at Guantanamo Bay. This song does have some streaks of politics but I wouldn't say it's the whole song, nor were The Strokes trying to make a political record like Radiohead was in 2003.

The Strokes – What Ever Happened? Lyrics 7 months ago
This song is basically a reply to the entire last album as the Strokes love making connections to their previous work "He's gonna let you down" for "Cuz I've got you to let me down" and this leads onto the next song Reptilia (me realising I don't have any more points to make, haha). I guess this is a well-suited song for Marie Antoinette because it's very much a narcissistic song. The "culture" line could be referring to the new "garage rock revival" that The Strokes are constantly being moshed in with? But like any bands put in that "culture," they don't assimilate...

Sleater-Kinney – Fade Lyrics 7 months ago
This song sounds like 'The End Has No End' by the Strokes, which is an interpolation of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' by Guns and Roses. This is exactly the effect No Cities To Love is going for - and that's why I love it. It's purposely borrowing from popular songs of the day as many fans have pointed out, but for the sake of demonstrating that damage that other bands have done by 'stealing' verses and solos from music in the past. This is why Sleater-Kinney is art.

The Strokes – Between Love And Hate Lyrics 8 months ago
20 years later, this is on of my fave Strokes songs of all times. I don't know why but the whole theme of it all (lyrics?) really stand out to me, especially as someone who has felt the same way julian has (not necessarily romantically). But just the feeling of "never needing anybody". it's narcissistic, it's an ego-filled thing you say to make yourself feel better when you think you might be in the wrong/questioning yourself after being gaslit (hence the line "Am I wrong?") This is a very me-and-my-problems song, in that julian also half-jokingly sings "Don't sing along with me" right after. I think the song could have whole different meanings and it's interesting to see people's thoughts on them. IMO, I do think this song is a diss track (I'm Australian, I shouldn't say diss) towards Julian's ex, Colleen Barry, who he newly would have separated from at the time. The way Colleen talks about Julian with nostalgia but also sourness reflects on these themes. Also makes sense because they dated in high school.

Arctic Monkeys – Fake Tales of San Francisco Lyrics 1 year ago
It leads the album title "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not". Arctic Monkeys are being compared to bands like the Strokes, that they're influenced by, but are completely different bands. The "handbook" is referring to the rules of rock'n'roll, how a band should or shouldn't act in order not to "sell out" or use an element of "make believe" in their music. Arctic Monkeys want to make sure their music is looking to the new, being careful not to take away the sense of the old, and they're fine with that. If the other person isn't talking off their ear half the time.
