This song has a strange meaning for me. One reason why I quit church was the competition between small and big churches. People at small churches are often bitter and jealous. Big churches have more members, more activities and events, well-maintained buildings. I felt very pressured to attend a small church and prove that I was a "real" Christian, who didn't need the "fancy stuff".
However, those small churches are hoping to grow. They would be *thrilled* if their church attracted a bunch of new members, so they could also be a big place: "This town is our town, it is so glamorous / Bet you'd live here if you could and be one of us"
In my experience, those small churches don't grow because they are too narrow-minded and "set in their ways". There can be other factors (such as location) but this is common. They want new members - who are not too different from them. People who are not too open-minded and will not upset the status quo. Then, when the church doesn't have enough members, they worry about closing: "Discarded stars, like worn-out cars, litter the streets of this town". And they blame the big churches. |

This song makes me think of someone who may not be a "bad person", but got into a difficult situation. My husband once had to fire an employee who he caught stealing. The employee admitted to it. He said that finances were tough at home, and he was just trying to pay a couple of bills and buy a little more time. It was still wrong for him to steal, but he was an overall nice guy. He was one of my husband's best employees at the time. He just panicked and made a bad choice. |

I used to dislike this song, because I thought the man in the song is being pushy. After listening a few more times, I think he just wants to take a risk. He is approaching this woman, and if she rejects him, he will move on. He can know that he tried. |

To me, it sounds like a girl/woman was trying to turn the narrator into someone else: "She tried to make me world the way she thought it should be". She wanted to mold, sculpt, transform him into her fantasy image. He could not deal with it anymore. He needed to leave because she refused to accept the real person. She wanted her fantasy, not him. |

The husband in this song is often criticized, but I think the woman should take some of the blame. I am a married woman; married for 12 years. If you want to be a stay-at-home-partner, you should expect to do basic chores and tasks that are part of caring for a household. Yes, the husband could wash the dishes sometimes, and he should *not* be at the bar "most every single day of the week". However, he works to support the home. Can't he have one or two nights at the bar, or watch some TV, after a long day at work? I completely understand why my husband wants to come home and relax in front of the TV sometimes.
I think the woman should have tried to know her husband as a real person, instead of hoping that he would transform into her fantasy man someday. |

I think this song is about a man with a girlfriend/wife, and other people don't approve of their relationship. He wants her family, friends, etc. to understand how much he loves her. He wishes that he could impress them.
This is why you shouldn't allow your friends and family to control your entire life. You hear about people ignoring family/friends when they start dating someone new, but I've witnessed the opposite situation: a relationship was damaged because family/friends were jealous and self-centered. |

"Raised on promises / She couldn't help thinkin' that there was a little more to life" - When a lot of us were growing up, adults told us that we could be anything we wanted. They also said that a college degree would guarantee an awesome lifestyle: "Go to college or you'll be making French fries/flipping burgers!" Look at how many people have a degree, but they aren't even working in their chosen field, have debt from student loans, don't own a home, etc. College is not automatically the best choice for everyone. Some people never went to college, but they're happy to get a day's worth of work done, then relax with friends and family.
Anyway, it's basically what this song makes me think about. The young woman realizes that the "go to college or you'll be making French fries" idea is not always true. She needs to choose her own path. |

This is a good song about a relationship that some people might not understand. If you are both legal adults and you make each other happy, then you don't need anyone else's permission or opinions. |

I think this song is a bit sarcastic. When the narrator says "It's only a broken heart", he is more hurt than he wants to admit. I've watched people act this way after relationships/marriages ended - pretending to have a super positive attitude, not letting anyone see them upset. But if you know them well enough, you suspect that they are hiding their sadness. |

@[Theo0101:46533] In my experience, church often involves people putting on acceptable "fronts" and "images"..being afraid to share their true opinions and feelings, afraid to say anything too controversial/too different from the status quo. Many Christians accept this "herd mentality" and go along with the group. There is little tolerance and respect for people with different lifestyles, beliefs, etc. That is my interpretation of "The churches don't have windows" - the lack of open-mindedness and tolerance for all people. A building/room without windows would keep you from having perspective on other places and people.
I think the graveyards are described as having "windows" because they are open, straightforward places. Regardless of what those people believed, whether they were "good Christians" or not, they ended up in a graveyard. We are all human, and none of us has all the answers. |

I haven't been a night watchMAN (am a woman), but I was an overnight cashier in the past. I basically acted as the security person, without a gun. This song reminds me of the creepy and lonely feelings. It could be scary if customers were aggressive and rude. Some were drunk/high and wanted to tell me about their problems and drama. There were quiet nights. I would read a newspaper, walk around the store, look at stuff that I might buy later. It's not a job that I would like to do again, though. |

Normally I don't like songs about someone whining/complaining because their love interest/"crush" wants to be with someone else. Nobody owes you a relationship. However, I think this song is better than most of those. The woman laughed at him and told him goodbye. He accepts that she made her choice, and he can't do anything about it. |

I think this is about a man being in love with a woman, and not trying to control/dominate her. It reminds me of the song "Hold On Loosely" by .38 Special. He still wants her to be an individual with her own identity. He says "You belong somewhere close to me", but he also names places where they can go if she wants. |

When I was a teenager in the early 2000s, I thought this was a cool, "moody" song. Now it has a new meaning for me. I've struggled with General Anxiety Disorder and panic attacks. It's very frustrating when people say "Everyone has anxiety". There is a difference between being anxious once in a while, and having an actual disorder that impacts your everyday life. This song describes some of the feelings/moods that I've experienced. |

Why is she taking her clothes off, then covering herself with a towel, *before* the shower? I am a woman and I take my clothes off, then step directly into the shower. No reason for me to walk around in a towel first. |
