This was the first song I heard by them, and immediately loved. I initially thought it was about abortion, and while there are enough references to make it logical conclusion, the more I listen to it the less I think abortion has anything to do with it. Abortion and drug abuse are mentioned in almost every song the have. The most telling lines to me are in the bridge " Something cold is forced inside " and "hymns of the needle freak" "her dreams are liquid blue ". These are all descriptions of heavy drug abuse. The main theme of Truddi's story is abuse; Sexual, emotional, mental and drugs. That is the main theme here with " Scream of the Butterfly " as well. Abuse. It's also worth mentioning that the title came from an old exploitation film from the 60's. Jim Morrison also mentioned this movie in one of his songs. |

The line " the kite string pops " is a reference to dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder. The kite string pops when one distinct personality takes control and the other is " swallowed whole by the sky". I think this songs about abandoning his reality and living in the fantasy the multiple personalities have created in his mind. |

It's one of my favorite songs on the album and very cleverly written. The song at its core is about death, but its intentionally vague enough that one person can interpret it in several different ways. There are enough references to abortion, suicide and homicide, or someone being emotionally or mentally dead to justify any of the lines of thought. I personally think its about a murder victim witnessing his own autopsy and embalming. |
