Badfinger – Blodwyn Lyrics 5 months ago
I have to admit, I really have no answers to give except that I think that this is a pretty good love song and I’ve never heard of the name Blodwyn before. I”m told that it’s actually a woman’s name and all this time I thought it was a man. The singer could’ve been talking about a male friend, I mean after all who knows but I’ve only recently learned that it’s a woman’s name.

Thing is I thought maybe the song had to do with the “culture” meaning if you were Scottish, you might know what they’re talking about in this song. I’m not sure what “Take your/my spoon” means to say or imply, which is why again I thought maybe it was a cultural thing, that only the Scots, Irish or English may know.

If any of you who come across this do know, then don’t hesitate to share it with me or the rest of us, I’d love to know. Good song from a great band. Albeit a band with a sad and tragic fate but this is from the “No Dice” album which I feel is their best. Every song is a winner on this and this album has the original version of “Without You” on it which was made famous by Harry Nilsson and butchered later on by Mariah Carey. Music is life!

The Alan Parsons Project – The Turn of a Friendly Card Lyrics 7 months ago
Great song! You know in all this time I’ve never put the lyrics “There’s a sign in the desert that lies to the west” & “A wheel in perpetual motion” with “Faces that show no outward emotion” to Las Vegas but now it makes perfect sense. I agree with what Anomaly57 had to say about it. Well c’mon it’s kinda obvious now that the song is referencing gambling and Vegas and other places I guess.

BUT you don’t t have to take that as the meaning of the song if you don’t want to, if this makes any sense. It CAN be interpreted any way you like if you prefer. I’ve ALWAYS thought that it had to do with life itself. Meaning fate, destiny, good ol luck, fortune, that kind of thing.

“The game never ends when your whole world depends on the turn of a friendly card”. Which is a way describing fate itself. Are you going to get that house? Get approved for that loan? Get that car? Get that job? Get out of that possible prison sentence? Get a good doctors prognosis when you’re afraid that something’s wrong? Find out that person(s) forgave you? Get that girl? Will you/this be alright? What an I going to do? What’s going to happen,

It “never ends” when it all depends on the revelation(s) of fortunate circumstances that can go or not go your way. The “turn of a friendly card”. So much of life is a gamble too, where the lyric also does apply to.

I’ve always thought that there was a lyric in the that went “They think there lives will be easier but the doorway before them is barred”. For some reason I thought I heard that one time and but when I look at the lyrics I can’t find any mention of it. Hmmmm….wonder why in all this time I thought that it was in the song. Who knows. That’s the magic of music and songs I guess. Hope you liked my interpretation as well.

Warren Zevon – Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner Lyrics 9 months ago
Why did the CIA want him dead? Because he was “the best?” That makes no sense whatsoever. With that in mind why not kill everyone else, such as Van Owen? Is it their standard practices to kill the people they recruit or use for sh!t? Seriously.

John Denver – Thank God I'm A Country Boy Lyrics 1 year ago
All these years I’ve always thought that when he sang “Well I’d play Sally Goodin’ all day if I could but the LORD & my wife wouldn’t take it very good. So I play when I can and work when I should, Thank God I’m a country boy!” He meant he was fooling around, as in goofing off. This is what I thought was inferred by “Sally Goodin”.

Since I’ve done some research I know that “Sally Goodin” is the name of an old fiddle tune popular in some parts of the south. So most likely he was just stating the name of the tune he’s playing in the song, but I actually liked what I initially thought he meant better! Anyone else?

Paul Simon – Loves Me Like a Rock Lyrics 2 years ago
This one always confused me as a kid & when I heard it on the radio I used to to sing it. “When I was a little boy, the devil would call on me”. My mother who heard me would say “Don’t say that!” LOL

The thing is I thought it was the devil who was saying to “him” “Who do, who do you think you’re fooling?” Because I was like why would the devil say to him? Is he a good guy, is he his mentor or friend in this song? As dumb as it sounds that’s what I thought.

I’ve NEVER looked at the lyrics online for this song & now that I am, now I see it’s Paul saying that TO the devil, “Who do, who do you think you’re fooling?” BUT even then I still don’t understand, because the first lyric is “The devil would call on me”. So in response why are you saying that to him when he hasn’t really said anything yet?

Unless it’s supposed to be assumed what he said or had asked but again as the song goes all you ever hear is “When I was a little boy, the devil would call on me/my name” & Paul would reply “Who do, who do you think you’re fooling?” Obviously nobody as ol’ scratch hadn’t even come out & said much of anything besides calling Paul’s name so that doesn’t make real sense but ok.

But yes, it’s about a mother’s love so great that she got down on her knees a hugged her son with all her might. It’s about how a mother’s love never changes & that you’re still her son in every circumstance. Boy, man, young, old, Policeman, Doctor, President, single, married, etc. That it’s the one constant throughout your life so this is easy to take away from the song. Great piece, always loved this one.

America – I Need You Lyrics 2 years ago
Words can’t describe how I love this song! Never get tired of hearing it when it comes on the radio, it’s the kind of song that’s always welcome whenever it comes on. Some songs, even classics, no matter how good or famous they are you still may not be in the mood to listen to, nothing against them of course but this song I always am up for listening to.

Yeah it’s obvious it’s a love song of some sort but the sentiments expressed can be for family or a friend(s) and a girl, a love. Its critics make fun of it for being sappy & because of the lyrics but to me there’s nothing sappy or wrong with the lyrics.

It’s an interesting piece this song is. The singer ranges from somberness, to self reflection & maybe even a religious experience. For example the beginning & yes I love how this song begins, “We used to laugh, we used to cry, we used to bow our heads & wonder why”. That speaks of humility & reflection, possibly an epiphany when you express such sentiments. The singer & whoever he’s with are humbled, respectful of a profound experience. When you bow your head & “wonder why” you most likely do that when you pray. That first set of lyrics is almost like he’s coming from a funeral. It has that tone to it. The lyrics “I guess I’ll make the most of what you left to me” bears out that opinion in my point of view.

It ranges also from sentimentality “I need you, like the flower needs the rain”. To melancholy, “And everyday I’d laugh the hours away, just knowing you were thinking of me” To pain, regret & self doubt “And then it came, I was put to blame, for every story told about me. About me, about me”. Those are some serious extremes there in tone & lyrics. Wonder if he ever explained what that meant, if he did I never read it. Then there’s the hopeful “Guess I’ll start it all again” which is simply saying that he’d do it all over again if he could.

Yes I know the singer said it was about a girl he knew but it can be interpreted like I said about friends, family, remembering the past & even losing someone, about death, the lyrics DO fit that option you know.

Great song, great songwriting, it’s my favorite song off of the album.

David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics 2 years ago
Interesting song, with lyrics that to me seem to clash. He’s saying “Though nothing will keep us together” which isn’t exactly reassuring or romantic in the least. He says “You, you can be mean. And I, I’ll drink all the time”. Oh righty then, you can gleam from that what you like. Not exactly clear in the least.

“And the shame was on the other side”. “ We're nothing, and nothing will help us”. “Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay, but we could be safer, just for one day”

Really out there lyrics that don’t exactly paint a pretty picture even though you may consider this a feel good song due to the lyrics “We can be heroes, just for one day”

I’m thinking this song is about war & strife, due to the unevenness of it & how the sentiments expressed seem to collide with one another.

The shame “being on the other side” “Then you better not stay, so we/you can be safer” ‘“Though nothing will drive them away”, “We can beat them, forever and ever”, seems to illustrate how one would think and feel about an enemy country in a time of war, so whatever the song is about, it’s clear that David & his friend seem to be in the thick of it as they say.

More concerning than reassuring, this is about the impermanence of things during a time of great upheaval and how despite everything we can be “ok” even if for only one day. Great song, but one that I”m afraid is taken for granted. It has more meaning behind it than one may think. But this is just my take on it. I respect the views that all of you have on this extraordinary song.

George Clinton – Atomic Dog Lyrics 3 years ago
There are 2 things with this song I like to mention. First of course it’s about women or men being attracted to & chasing women which the singer seems to lament not celebrate as some of you have observed. “Why must I act like that? Why MUST I chase the cat?”

Secondly the phrase/lyric “Atomic Dog” I think signifies himself. At the beginning he mentions several classes of dogs, “Clapping dogs, House Dogs, Street dogs, Dancing dogs, Nasty Dogs” Naturally these examples are symbolic to signify different types of people.

He’s referring to himself in regards that human beings are the alphas in in our extended families with dogs or cats as this is the way it must be.

We are the alpha , the “atomic” the Atomic Dog. The title of the song means to say he’s the head honcho, the Atomic Dog, head of the pack. Since no else here is mentioning this I thought I’d add it to the conversation. Hopefully you find it interesting.

Men at Work – It's A Mistake Lyrics 3 years ago
Well I agree with the nuclear war sentiments even though I never thought about it before. The thing is I think this song doesn’t speak of any specific war but that it’s based on the view points of 2 soldiers who are relating their personal experiences.

The lyrics do seem to bear that out, that the story is probably being told by at least a couple of them if not one speaking for them both. These soldiers are the hapless kind, the “Ours is not to wonder why but to do or die” type & this is basically their lot & it sucks & they’re saying so.

They even get some jibes in. “Tell us commander is it party time? If it is can we all come?” “Don’t say he drew his gun”. “We’ll send the card & flower”. Yeah it all was a mistake right? They’re being somewhat humorous in all of this.

Disagree that they’re expressing remorse over killing someone but detailing the hopelessness of their plight. “Why don’t you all throw in the towel?” To end it & get the hell out of here/there. But that’s my take on it.

Marvin Gaye – What's Going On Lyrics 4 years ago
My big gripe regarding this song (Not against the song itself) is that no site lyrics or otherwise ever includes the lyrics from the chorus into this song. It’s never included. For example “Picket signs (silly stuff) & picket lines (silly stuff), don’t punish me with brutality, etc”.

You may think this is a trivial thing to nitpick about but it for want of including this it makes the song all that more potent & it clarifies it some. He’s telling you basically that you think you’re doing something with all the marching & picketing & shouting but in fact it’s all “silly stuff” that isn’t worth anything & you’re not really accomplishing anything. Now does this make sense or what?

Now when the “Picket signs/lines” lyric is repeated again, the chorus (I think) is singing something different the second time around but I can’t make out exactly what they’re saying no matter how I strain to listen to what theyr’e saying. Maybe someone here knows, but I can’t make it out. But is IS important & the background/chorus lyrics should always be included as part of this song.

I’ve heard that, that line was mean to refer to John Lennon & his marriage to Yoko Ono. Especially since George had a hand in writing it. Sounds plausible.

Cream – Badge Lyrics 4 years ago
The thing is I know why the song is named “Badge” I heard the story as simple as it is, but all these years before I actually found out I had a belief that the term “Badge” referred to love. The love that you had, the love that you were given by others, family, friends, etc. That you wore it like a “Badge”.

Yes I know again what the title refers to but I like my own explanation better so I see no reason to change my views on it, so this is what I”m still going with. That’s the beauty of song, you can believe what you want. It’s a personal thing.

Led Zeppelin – Friends Lyrics 4 years ago
Words can’t express my love for this song. It’s so honest & true, I sometimes get teary eyed listening to this. It’s not easy to find a song where every word is counsel but you have it all right here. This is the best lyric in the song:

“So anytime somebody needs you
Don't let them down, although it grieves you
Some day you'll need someone like they do
Looking for what you knew”

They’re saying a nutshell to be there for someone even though it might be really inconvenient at the time for you to do so, even if it puts your back up against the wall or totally messes up your other plans. This is the best part of friendship, to sacrifice on behalf of someone else who needs you. Best part of the song & best message of the song, I think anyway.

Life, isn’t worth it without friends, & like Morrison was known to say, I prefer a feast of friends (a small circle) to the giant family.

Remember: “ Without a friend, there's no denying
You're incomplete, they'll be no finding
Looking for what you knew.”

Best part of Zep 3 “Friends” is.

Hootie & the Blowfish – Can't Find The Time To Tell You Lyrics 4 years ago
It’s wrong to put this up here on songmeanings for people to discuss it as this is not Hootie & the Blowfish’s song. Mind you for those that don’t know this is their cover (an inferior one at that) of a song done by the group Orpheus who wrote & performed the original in 1968. It’s a great song, but again Orpheus were the ones who wrote it & sang it to greater effect originally. So Hooties version word for word is the same as Orpheus but there’s not a section on here for them.

Kinda defeats the purpose after all you can’t ask Hootie & the group what it means, they never wrote it.

The Traveling Wilburys – Tweeter And The Monkey Man Lyrics 5 years ago
This is one confusing song, I have to admit I’m confused about a whole lot that’s going on in it. Now Jan hops out of bed & grabs a gun & says “There’s someplace i gotta go, it’s best that you don’t know”. Now where is she & who is she talking to? She’s obviously not there with her brother so again where is she?

Now she is supposed to have loved the Monkey Man but in the end it sounds like she’s gunning for him because he’s using Tweeter as a shield to protect himself from her so what happened? Did the Monkey Man kill the cop, who was her brother or did maybe Jan herself do it?

Tweeter & The Monkey Man let the cop go the first time around & just tied him to a tree so it doesn’t make sense that they’d decide to kill him all of a sudden so I’m really wondering again if Jan killed her own brother & she just snapped for unknown reasons. To me it’s never explained unless you good people here know better.

Edward Bear – Last Song Lyrics 6 years ago
Try staying on topic & discuss the meaning of the song rather than your silly notions that a obscure one hit wonder band is better than The Beatles. Reaching much?

Don’t get me wrong, this song is near & dear to my heart, a fond part of my childhood growing up in the 70’s. Now as for the meaning which is why we all should be here.

The song is obviously an ode to somebody that was special to the singer.

Another classic example of unrequited & unreturned love. The lead singer loved someone a whole lot who sadly didn’t care or hasn’t returned his affections in the least.

The whole song basically describes how she left him hanging in all that time & just plain forgot he even existed. He’s waiting on her return but she isn’t ever coming back. That’s my take on it anyway.

Find myself wholeheartedly agreeing with you Delia. The song is obviously an ode to somebody that was special to the singer.

You’re right about the “carrying a torch” part. It’s a classic example of unrequited & unreturned love. The lead singer loved someone a whole lot who sadly didn’t care or returned his affections in the least.

The whole song basically describes how she left him hanging in all that time & just plain forgot he even existed. That’s my take on it anyway.
