| Trampled by Turtles – Wait So Long Lyrics | 7 months ago |
| This song is about having a complicated relationship with a prostitute. | |
| Sarah McLachlan – Adia Lyrics | 10 months ago |
| Sarah is an Irish Canadian, if I'm not mistaken. "Adia" could be a phoentic spelling of the Gaelic "a dhia", which means "Oh God" in English. So the lyrics of this song could actually be meant to address God directly. She is apologizing to God for failing in life and questioning the Catholic belief in original sin. ( We are born innocent). | |

| Shawn Colvin – The Facts About Jimmy Lyrics | 2 years ago |
|
I'll tell you the facts about Jimmy. (Or I will take a crack it at, anyway) Jimmy seems to be a widower. (His wife lives somewhere colder, meaning , she probably lives 6 feet underground in a graveyard somewhere) This other woman that Jimmy sees is presumably Shawn herself. Losing his wife kind of destroyed Jimmy's life and his life began to fall apart. (Jimmy has debts and Jimmy has ties) Jimmy gets involved in crime to try to pay his debts and get out of trouble. Eventually he gets caught and ends up in prison. (I miss Jimmy like I miss my wine) Maybe Shawn was involved with this bad guy. |

| Sheryl Crow – If It Makes You Happy Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| I interpret this song as a relationship where Sheryl is dating a man who is a depressed struggling artist and maybe addicted to drugs and giving up on life ( you listen to Coltrane, derail your own train) "Derail your own train" probably means drinking or otherwise getting messed up on something at home listening to John Coltrane's jazz. She tries to help this man and be supportive. She even goes to his house and cooks for him. "Scrape the mold off the bread/ and serve you French toast again". The problem is this man is not reciprocating with her and is always sad no matter what she does to try to make him happy. She gets moments where she makes him happy but they are fleeting and this man continues to be self destructive. Some of the best musicians in history fell into this trap. Crow mentions Benny Goodman and Marilyn Monroe who both are examples of artists who used alcohol and drugs to ease the stress of their fame. John Coltrane was also a raging heroin addict and an alcoholic and he is mentioned in this song too. There is my new cents. | |
| Dire Straits – Sultans Of Swing Lyrics | 2 years ago |
| I interpret this song as a sort of lament over the death of jazz music. When you understand the history of how music evolved from root genres such as Dixieland jazz ( the band is blowing Dixie, double four time) the meaning and the sadness of this song becomes more clear. The sound of this song reflects maybe a frustration that this beautiful music has been largely forgotten. I guess Mark maybe felt sorry for this band because the bar was nearly empty, yet he enjoyed the show so much ( you feel alright when you hear the music play) that he decided to write a song about it in tribute to them and to all the people who helped create the music we all love today. Rock and roll would not exist without dixieland jazz. ( It isn't what they call rock n roll) | |
| Widespread Panic – Driving Song Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| I always thought the lyrics went "A bowl for the cat, a bowl for the dog, NO bowl for me". I think this song captures and conveys the frustration of being a broke working class shlub who is struggling to get by. Desperation causes some people to start driving because they aren't happy where they are anymore and need to escape | |
| Adele – Hello Lyrics | 6 years ago |
| I believe most of these interpretations so far have been been incorrect.. Adele even said it herself during an interview that this song is about her son. She had to leave her son for a time so she could write a record and she was guilty about this. She was overcoming a long period of writer's block and finally found a way to reconnect . She wrote "Hello" as a way to express her reconnection to everyone around her as well as herself, as she rediscovered her boundless songwriting talent. She is literally saying "Hello" to the lost and confused person she was before as the enlightened and determined person she is now. | |
| Natalie Merchant – Nursery Rhyme of Innocence and Experience Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| @[Joeknob11:27940] To correct myself. This song is set in WW1. I've read other interpretations as the ship returning being a "ghost ship" and that the sailor is dead and the person bringing the presents is a stranger. It represents the loss of innocence, as the world has been forever changed | |
| Natalie Merchant – Nursery Rhyme of Innocence and Experience Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| The version of this song feat. Natalie Merchant in collaboration with Lunasa is one of the sweetest songs I've ever heard. It is a story about a boy who grows into a man during a war. (I'm presuming it to be the 100 Years War in England, but I could be wrong). In the beginning of the song, the boy is hanging out on the docks looking to trade with sailors on a merchant freighter which is about to set sail. A young sailor promises him to bring him a fez, a drum, a sword, and a parakeet. Three years go by, in which time the ship was attacked during it's voyage. The boy is no longer a boy after 3 years but has turned into a man. Keeping to his word, the sailor makes it back with the things he promised the boy, only to find out that the boy doesn't even recognize him anymore, having grown up. The sailor must have been through such an ordeal that it changed his appearance. The young boy who is now a man notices that the children who used to be on the ship are no longer there, which means they either didn't survive the voyage or were captured. This is a song about growing up and forgetting about who you used to be when you were young. How age and experience changes you. | |
