The Charlatans (UK) – The Blind Stagger Lyrics 4 years ago
Like a lot of Charlies songs, extracting a meaning from this one depends more upon the mood and feeling behind a couple key phrases and words--otherwise it's pretty much nonsense! Lyrics are at about #5 on the list of what is most important in a Charlatans song.

What "The Blind Stagger" is NOT about is blind people, cats, or your daddy. It's about having compassion and being generous when it's not warranted, when perhaps someone else would be a more appropriate provider. We should take care of our neighbor, and our ex, and that old classmate who wouldn't sit with us at lunch, even though we know they're taking advantage of us a little bit.

Vocalist Tim Burgess is eternally optimistic. During a crisis, he's got rainbows and a bucket full of gold; your own personal leprechaun! With "daylight sneaking through [his] window," he trips over himself and starts to sing the word "ss-sneaking" before it's even time on the beat. He literally cannot wait for things to get better, because they're already better.

VAST – Ecstasy Lyrics 4 years ago
Without the vocal, the sound of this song alone communicates a conflict, a very deep pain. We almost don't need the lyrics to tell us he attempts to resolve it variously through sex, substances, or power dynamics in a relationship. So many people have this same "secret," it's no secret at all. The uninitiated who encounter someone like this learn soon enough, and they do lose some of their innocence in the revelation. This song is not about ecstasy; it is the sound of loss and the miles and the time spent trying to make sense of it even as they are the cause of loss to others.

New Order – Waiting for the Sirens' Call Lyrics 6 years ago
A song as beautiful as the Sirens' call about the possibility and impossibility of true love, the very concept of which is an evanescent, fleeting fantasy. The myth of love is just as seductive as the prospect of escaping "with a stranger on the shore." Contemplating the remote chance this is the real thing is a hopeful blip in otherwise dreary days, but we rarely distinguish between this temptation and temptation of the flesh before our inevitable return to the sea of sound thinking, more pragmatic concerns.

Radiohead – Lull Lyrics 6 years ago
The way Thom sings "the stress and the tension" just breaks my heart. I have the most carefree life imaginable but I CAN'T MAKE ANYTHING HAPPEN, and it has taken a toll.

I thought I was this big Radiohead fan yet I never heard this "Karma Police" B-side until the OKNOTOK reissue. I was in shock the first time I listened to it when it prematurely, abruptly ended: It's really over? How could they do that? Fortunately, the brevity of "Lull" is part of its mystique now. I can only hope this phase of my life will follow likewise.

North Atlantic Oscillation – Ceiling Poem Lyrics 7 years ago
I had this awful dream where I was in the elementary school I attended when I was a little kid. I was being held hostage at gunpoint with some other kids by unseen assailants. It seemed like we were the only ones still alive. I somehow escaped and ran across the street to the home where when I was a kid a bunch of us were babysat until our parents picked us up after work. I was rousing kids from their naps, warning them about the danger across the street. I explained that we had to leave before we were taken hostage too and that we needed to help the other kids at school. I had been through this awful experience, traumatized, yet nobody believed me; they suspected I was on drugs.

The dream was kind like a prequel to the story of the person in "Ceiling Poem," who wakes up in a straitjacket. Edgy and damaged, they possess a truth so imminent, so terrible, they could only be mentally ill or dangerous.

"You're not getting off the ground this year." It seems more like never.

TV on the Radio – Happy Idiot Lyrics 7 years ago
I was experiencing a small bit of success with a job I have, landing an extraordinary opportunity to talk to an absolute legend in the business. My ex and I had been texting every now and then, and I was like, 'OMG I'm freaking out, I can't believe this, what will I say?' because I knew how much he respected this "legend." My ex responded, "I'm a happy idiot, to keep my mind off you." So I think maybe I need to fuck off for a while.

Despite its universality, it can be difficult to articulate pain. We sometimes didn't even know it was there.

R.E.M. – Suspicion Lyrics 7 years ago
No actual sex happens and no actual falling in love happens. All the dazzling, seductive hallmarks of sex or love the narrator refers to are merely a performance simulating what happens before the real thing, the times when sex or love might have actually happened under the same conditions having long passed. Much easier, and safer, to just "Dream, dream" about them instead. Suspicion confirmed.

Sugar – Panama City Motel Lyrics 8 years ago
I always assumed this song was about what Bob did NOT write in the lyrics, as in what is happening at the motel, what's he doing there, why is he there, who else is there? But after reading @[fuzzypiggy:23406]'s interpretation, this song isn't as bleak as I thought.

Seal – Secret Lyrics 8 years ago
Don't let the sweet production finishes on this track fool you: there is more than a secret hiding within this song.

There are some couples, some relationships, that you seem to know just about everything about. You know who I'm talking about: your co-worker whose spouse picks them up from work every Friday, who's there at every office event, even their kid spends some time in the office because it's that kind of warm, inviting, family-friendly work environment. Or maybe it's that couple you see everywhere: at the movies, the pub, charity fundraisers, church, Little League games, sports events, etc. The world is theirs, with every possible thing to enjoy about it theirs to enjoy, and to enjoy PUBLICLY.

They might even be celebrities, and we know every twist and turn in their very public relationship. We're rooting for them to keep being the fabulous team with an extravagant life for all to see. Or alternately, we could be consumed with jealousy and envy, sickened by their ubiquity and overexposure, whether they're famous or if it's your sister's beautiful family or your boss's stud of a husband. Regardless, it's hard work being in the public eye, but their love and commitment to one another are undeniable. They're the couple everyone wants to be: successful, beautiful, happy. You might think, "If only I could be so open and free with MY relationship, with MY version of happiness, if only it was celebrated like theirs." We want what they've got. They have the life we wish we had.

We know almost everything there is to know about them. Except for that one thing that could never be known from public appearances or public affection. It's the thing only they could ever know, only they could describe, if at all. Maybe it's good, maybe it's bad, but no matter how privileged or public their relationship, only the two of them know this wonderful (or monstrous) thing, together. Not everything about love is so simple, so easy to wear on your sleeve. That is what "Secret" is about.

Soundgarden – Limo Wreck Lyrics 8 years ago
As we "harvest the gold" and "harvest the souls" of the dead, it's so easy to judge someone's entire life based upon one moment. People sometimes make choices after a lifetime of confusion, denial, and indecision had previously prevented them from taking action.
We can change for the better, but the trauma of second-guessing our inner sense of the truth can follow us around "for the rest of [our lives]."

INXS – The One Thing Lyrics 8 years ago
You know what it does to me?
It cuts the night like a razor
It rarely talks and brings danger

Why don't I look twice when it's so fast?
In daylight it makes me pretty
Back for more it keeps coming
