so i was in a long term relationship for about 8 months with a girl who i really did love but the distance was too hard to overcome. this song always reminds me of that. partially because it was usually a song i’d listen to on the drive home after a weekend at her house. generally these drives were made at night in the dark, hence where i draw from the “between these two white highway lines” lyrics. i’m not sure the actual meaning but i know this song will always hold a special place in my heart for those times. a good friend of mine once told me that music is really cool in the way that in can transport us back to a time and a specific place but that not all of those are places we want to go back to. i don’t want to go back to those times (especially because the relationship ended on a somewhat sour note) but i don’t mind the mementoes flooding back when it comes to this song because it’s a happy melancholic type of feel. “baby come home” is just the ringing in my ears sometimes reminding me of those long drives home.

Goodness such an awesome song. I think it's about growing up and moving away from perhaps your partying ways where you're with different women a lot and finally settling down with one. I love the final verse where goes "the city outside is nothing but a flicker now. you see our friends to bed, you turn out the lights. I start to think you'll make a beautiful mother and I like to think I've everything I want from this life." Beautiful summary of growing up where the woman you love is gonna be a fucking awesome wife and mom and your friends are growing up with you and your life is good. I love it. fun. is awesome

@[arobinson99:20678] I see where you're coming from with the future tense. Especially with the "I won't have to wait for you" line. Maybe like the girl he's in love with is with someone else? Regardless I think at the end they are together and that's where the novels line comes in beautifully. Jesus that's an amazing metaphor. I love it.

James Bay – Hold Back The River Lyrics

I cannot believe James' songs don't have more comments. As someone who is about to graduate high school and essentially start over with many lifelong friends going in completely different directions, this song connects with me. I think it's basically about holding back the river so we can truly value friendships and reminiscing on his childhood friendships. I dunno, but it connects with me that way.

James Bay – Incomplete Lyrics

I'm falling in love with James Bay with every song I've heard as every song just connects with me. I'm in a tough spot in my life. About a year ago my first girlfriend and I broke up after about a year together and the song Let It Go by him got me through a tough breakup. Now as a senior in high school, Hold Back the River has connected with me as many of my closest friends that I've gone through life with for the last 10 years are going away to school and we are all going our separate ways. Need the Sun to Break and Incomplete have been getting me through recently. I'm gonna spare details, but I met a girl over the summer that I was just infatuated with but she was in a relationship. I was in love from afar for many months and I couldn't really move on to someone else. Need the Sun you Break was the song that got me through there as it just sort of claimed what I had been struggling with. Recently she and her SO broke up and I knew the sun had broken and my chance had come, only to be shut down rather quickly and be told that the feelings were one way. Incomplete has been the song to carry me through an incredibly depressed portion of my life. I know the lyrics imply the song is about a couple who is okay being imperfect and incomplete but the chorus always gets to me and I always hear that no matter what happens: the world is turning, we are growing, and we are incomplete. This is really the song that's gotten me through and will continue to get me through. I'm incomplete and that's okay.

I actually love this song. I feel like it's this super upbeat song that hides its true meaning. It's actually kinda depressing. I feel like it's talking about how he opens up to a girl and tells her his true feelings and how he gets rejected. And the rejection puts him at an all time low, a depressed and sad mood. And despite this depression he's in bc of the rejection he masks it and keeps smiling which is why the song is so upbeat and fun. Idk, just my interpretation.

Not gonna claim to know the meaning here but have a story similar to the other comment here and felt the need to share. I'm a senior in high school and a few years back (10th grade if I recall) I was really good friends with a whole family. Loved the parents, great friends a guy my age and a guy a year younger. They had a sister who was a junior at the time. I was in love with this girl. Nicest seeetest girl I've ever met. Never told her bc I didn't want to lose the friendships I shared with the whole family and her as well to be honest. Family moved out of state the next year. So I still have no clue about the feelings mutuality or anything and it hurts, mostly just thinking about what could've been. So I dunno. I found this song through Pandora and it just connected with me. Listened to it on repeat in the car and just drove around for an hour reflecting. It was a hard reality check and nostalgic moment for me. This song probably has nothing to do with anything I just wrote but to me it means a lot and I don't know.
