| MGMT – Little Dark Age Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
I’m convinced this song is one hundred percent about denial. Specifically the denial that the human race has for history repeating itself. And this song is packed with metaphor and references. The dark age signifying a deliberate state of denial. The narrator keeps referencing waking up out of bed which I take as waking up to what is really happening, eyes open wide, horrified at what is going on. I think the narrator has finally realized they have been in denial and is addressing the rest of us listeners to not be surprised when they “wake up” and see it too. Burn the page references a saying: if you can’t turn the page, burn the book. Meaning sometimes it is beyond saving just tear it all down and start anew. (Society, history, government, the human race..) The line about the stones on the stage reminds me of the The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. The people keep throwing stones and history keeps repeating itself and for what? Everyone needs to wake up! Shift paradigms. When they step out to the outside looking in and see what they have been doing, they’re horrified. They have been to blame all along . We’re all to blame, we’re all a part of it. We all play a role in the denial. All of the past events and signs point to the same outcomes but nothing changes because people are more comfortable living in a state of denial. Maybe the narrator is feeling that feeling of helplessness to it all which make him just want to give up. The song references suicide or possibly the death of the “dark age” so to speak. A new beginning? He is giddy knowing that it’s coming, people are beginning to wake up. The end about the police and his friends is a modern day reference to the denial going on in our society. He is speaking directly to us saying “hey my friends and I are awake! We see what’s happening” they are heading to the bridge with their stones. A duel metaphor for suicide by jumping off the bridge, sinking and drowning and also for taking that leap, letting go, waking up. Carvings on the face- wrinkles, old age, older generations being in denial (they say they find it hard to see what’s written on the wall even tho history always repeats itself ) their “engines failed again” that's the outcome of disguising the truth, you can never move forward. The feelings rot one wink at a time- a wink of “don’t worry everything is great! wink wink” but knowing it’s not Forgiving who you are and what you stand to gain- talking to society Doesn’t go away even if you hide- self explanatory, just because your eyes are closed to it doesn’t mean it’s not happening I grieve in stereo the stereo sounds strange - his thoughts and memories and beliefs have betrayed him and the things that were once comforting and familiar are now all wrong, strange, now that his eyes are open. Amazing lyrics, amazing song |

this is the soundtrack of slowly going insane. the melody is hauntingly upbeat. she sings like she's laughing but is about to snap at any moment. afraid of the light afraid to see clearly afraid to see truth can't sleep alone at night terrified of monsters psychically, metaphorically, etc. it's like she has just discovered some big horrible truth and her whole world is starting to unravel. everything she believes everything she knows lies I can't stop listening to it. it's hypnotizing. a dirty picture painted with a pretty brush dark subject matter sung sweetly |

| Andrew Belle – In My Veins Lyrics | 9 years ago |

I found myself thinking "what leaves in the morning, but finds you in the day?" and all I could come up with was: someone you slept with. sneaking out of your bed early in the morning before saying goodbye, but you find them in your thoughts later in the day. anyone have a different idea? I hear it mostly as an unrequited love song, but every once in a while it reminds me of a friend of mine who is a heroin addict. it was the words "in my veins" that triggered that reaction, obviously. but it does kind of fit the overall mood of the song. I guess it comes down to this: regardless of whether you're addicted to someone or something, either way, you get hurt in the end. for those of you in the dark, who can't take any more: keep catchin those glimpses of sunlight.. |

Uncle K once described it as "a dirty picture painted with a pretty brush." I think that's spot on. the melody is an almost happy-go-lucky tune, but there's also something heavy about it. and when you listen to the words, (regardless of what you believe the song is about) they are dark. these are dark lyrics. my favorite part is: "I'm not the reason that you go astray, we'll be alright if you don't ask me to stay." it's like he's twisting the knife when he says it. the whole song he's saying "you won't find nobody else like me", but then he pleasantly reminds you that he will be just fine without you, there are plenty of others for him out there to devour. very manipulative. p.s. my personal opinion is that the "he" in this, or the narrator of the song, is a personification of the ever-manipulative, wonderfully euphoric, killer drug, Heroin. and it makes very much sense that many people interpret this song as such, because news flash, there are a lot of heroin users in the world, and the minute one of them hears this, I guarantee it's the first thing they think of. that being said, this song could be about any drug. (psychically, metophorically, or otherwise.) A drug is defined as something with side effects and in most cases, is addictive. In this world, everyone is a junkie. We just all have different junk. "a dirty picture painted with a pretty brush." |

| Coldplay – Atlas Lyrics | 9 years ago |

i think the first part is describing the different ways in which humans deal with problems or turmoil. that could be any thing, from war on a large scale to a small war within themselves, either way, we all react differently- "some saw the sun"-- some see hope (light at the end of the tunnel, positive thinking) "some saw the smoke"-- negitive thinking, giving up "some heard the gun"-- running from your problems (hearing a gunshot at the begining of a race telling you when to run) "some bent the bow"-- wanting to fight (bow and arrow, clearly) "sometimes the wire must tense for the note"-- a beautiful metaphor for any struggle in life, the wire on a musical instrument pulled too tight will snap, too loose and it won't play, slides around, but pulled just right and tense, it makes the note you want, I think anyone can relate to that feeling. "caught in the fire say oh we're about to explode"-- that overwhelming feeling you sometimes get when you realize all the incredible mysteries of the world and humans and your soul place in it. "carry your world I'll carry your world" -- of course a reference to the Greek mythology Atlas carrying the world, it's heavy on his shoulders. when you become aware and wise about the world, you are finally ready to carry the weight of it, bittersweet, and to carry someone else's, is to carry their weight as well as your own, the ultimate sacrifice and love. the second verse I believe is referencing the people that are in their own world per say, they are far away, living in a fantasy (gold, dragons, etc) for some, to escape the reality of their world is the only way they can carry its weight. "show me the way lord because oh I'm about to explode"-- again, overwhelmed, realizing a new wisdom of the world around them and the world within themself. I know it was written for the movie, I just also happen to think Coldplay did an excellent job in writing lyrics that can be taken out of that context as well and interpreted in a way that is relatable to so many people. beautiful song |

| Ben Howard – Promise Lyrics | 10 years ago |

I think someone died. they're at a funeral. in literature and poetry, winter and cold are metaphors for death. bundles of flowers, definitely a funeral, and the singer is watching the deceased's loved ones grieving. and he is realizing, while starring at the face of death, that he doesn't want to be alone. he doesn't want to die alone. he wants someone to grieve him, he wants to be loved. and all of the little things, the petty fights, the disagreements, and pain, of a relationship, he is asking his lover if it's worth it. if she'll be the one that will stand by him forever, even when it becomes a burden. will she leave him alone? he's also asking himself if he can accept that kind of love. especially when he's so used to being alone. he's not very hopeful. in the end, he's convinced he will end up on his own. with no one, he's convinced he'll die alone, and that he will never be good enough. he's selfish, asking her to wait. wait for him to be ready. asking her to accept his cold heart and distance and still welcome him and love him endlessly. he needs love and wants it, but is incapable of returning the affection. and he knows it. |
