You Know What I Mean Lyrics

I, I can't take things slowly
Come, then go away, that's what they all do
Help me cause I'm feeling shaky
Tell me what's wrong with my brain
Cause I seem to have lost it

Cause I am afraid of the light
Yeah, you know what I mean
And I can't sleep alone at night
Yeah, you know what I mean

Lonely, that's not quite my problem
I have all I need, haven't quite lost it
I try so hard to be happy
Cause something goes on once again

Please, please come and save me
Tell me what's wrong with my brain
Cause I seem to have lost it

Cause I am afraid of the light
Yeah, you know what I mean
And I can't sleep alone at night
Yeah, you know what I mean

Cause I am afraid of the light
Yeah, you know what I mean
Cause I can't sleep alone at night
Yeah, you know what I mean

I like what beachbum says. I always interpreted this song as about a girl that gets involved with a lot of guys(lonely, that's not quite my problem) quickly (can't take things slowly) but always gets hurt by it in the end (come let away thats what they all do).

just gotta say this song has #swag

however as far as meaning goes i think this song is about our search for a global sense of community and how we all as human beings long to find our place in the world... and in that search for purpose many people get lost in the darkness of lies, propaganda, effortless comfort (aka ignorance), and so on. Being "afraid of the light" and "feeling shaky" meaning that we're scared of what the truth holds and discovering that who we are may not be who we want to be; but the only way to know fully is to expose ourselves to the light and not sheltering ourselves behind our own shadows...that's why we join cults because we are afraid to discover ourselves by ourselves, we want help but in reality you gotta do it yourself. I think the title is significant because that's how we literally connect; through understanding. you know what i mean?

Beautiful song ... nice simple, deep lyric. ON REPEAT.

The music reminds me of Twin Peaks. I read that some lyrics on this album are quotes from famous cult leaders. They said they were inspired by how these obviously deranged people can sometimes say things so beautiful. And that they like dark subject matter sung sweetly. I totally agree. The Cardigans, did that well. It always amused me how she could say something really hatefull but sooo sweetly. Hope you know what I mean.....sorry couldn't resist either.

My Opinion

Twin Peaks is exactly what I thought of when I heard this song. Reminiscent of female vocal-led band that played at the Roadhouse, I think...

Great song even though they ripped off the melody from the Supremes' Where Did Our Love Go.

Song Comparison

When I heard it, I was surprised that any artist would dare touch a Supremes hit....in this way.

"Cause I am afraid of the light Yeah, you know what I mean And I can't sleep alone at night Yeah, you know what I mean"

The lyrics are contradicting themselves.

I'm going to take a jab at it though and say what I think the meaning of being afraid of the light means. Most people are afraid of the dark because they don't know what may appear; she is afraid of the light because she's already experienced the dark of not knowing. Being able to know the outcome of something because of prior happenings is what she is afraid of. Ex: Recently in your relationship you and your significant other have been fighting often and it's gotten really bad. So bad that possibly at any time you guys could break up. The series coming from the first fight (the dark) to the domino effect of inclining fights leads to the light of knowing the relationship is over.

All I know is I can't sleep alone at night, and I suppose I am crazy.

This song is a great example of how art can mean different things to different people, and they are never wrong. For me, listening to this album with the constant thought of the horrific manipulation and death that occurred at Jonestown, this song reminds me of Christine Miller. She stood alone and tried to argue for the survival of the people of Peoples Temple, and in particular the babies. It's an excruciatingly sad story. Eventually she was shouted down by the crowd, dismissed by the leader, and possibly even murdered by lethal injection.

For the record, I am pretty sure that she says "I ain't afraid of the light" up until; 2:09 when she actually does say "I am afraid of the light". I could be hearing it wrong. I could be interpreting it wrong too. But that's what I get from it.

Ignore my contradicting comment. I take that part back.
