Iron & Wine – The Truest Stars We Know Lyrics 4 years ago
I think this song is an ode to the people of the world lost in the underbelly of things, those who get the worse end of the stick because between two people, someone has to win and someone has to lose. He's singing about the tiresome struggle of these lost people, who call out for help and it seems even the divine can only pray that they're granted some mercy. Rivers lose their individuality merging into the sea, leaves have to burn up to provide warmth, when there is a door of opportunity there is always a lock, an obstacle, and in any competition for something in life there's the dove who is taken down and the hawk who conquers. These poor people only ever lose their identities, their substance, their chances, and even their lives trying to go after what would make them happy.

When he says, "Everybody moves beneath the truest stars they know," I think he means that people just try to live their life by what they think makes sense, and that it's simply tragic when nothing seems to work in our lives because even when we believe we're doing the right things, we can still fail and lose everything.

Only she could sing this song. I just can't believe how colossal it is. It makes me think of two long lost lovers battling atop the summit of a mountain, with wind and snow flying about under a dark sky. To think I nearly looked this over going through the album. Damn...

Walk the Moon – Avalanche Lyrics 8 years ago
I think the song's trying to accentuate how special this chance at love is because the two happened to exist in the same lifetime with everything leading up to him seeing her,and there's this voice screaming out to him to take it,as if it's his own voice but from a past life trying to get him to not make the same mistake again. We're pretty sure he takes the moment. :) This is such a nice song ugh,so upbeat and romantic. "One glance and the avalanche drops / One look and my heartbeat stops" definitely illustrates the gravity of seeing someone you're so in love with. Awesome concept.

Jess Glynne – Take Me Home Lyrics 8 years ago
Everything about this is so real. This song honestly sounds more like actual words instead of lyrics, like someone who's been struggling for so long has fallen to their knees in front of someone who's been completely unaware that they were falling apart, and they're crying uncontrollably and spilling their heart to the last emotion. There's no complexity to the songwriting or the production, because none of this is being dressed up as something easier for the listener to handle. All of it comes straight from the very saddened, distraught, and broken mind of a victim to their own life. The title is just the perfect way to sum up that desperation to be freed and exposed. I love this song so,so much.

Coldplay – Everglow Lyrics 8 years ago
It's about someone who's left your life, but you didn't want them to go. It's simple, but it's heartbreaking, and also hopeful, since though they left, the person left a light in him that will always glow. That light could be reassuring words that person told him or just the memory of them in general. Remembering them will help him in times of pain and darkness, which he's thankful for, but the sense of longing reappears at the end with, "So if you love someone, you should let them know," implying that it's better to cherish someone while they're with you now than to only have their memory to hold. To me, this is a more lighthearted parallel of 'O' from Ghost Stories. Very tugging on the heart.

Melanie Martinez – Milk and Cookies Lyrics 8 years ago
I posted this on Reddit: "Now whenever I listen to it,I like to think it's from the perspective of someone who is either too insecure or scared of hurting the other person in the relationship,so they do their best to make that person hate them so that they'll leave on their own instead of having to explain their fears. In order to do that, the one who 'poisons' the other tries to think of them as someone they hate and /want/ gone so that it won't hurt so much when they break up."

The first verse describes the moment right as Cry Baby and her boyfriend meet together, and she's preparing to make him want to leave her,"1,2,melatonin is coming for you." The spoiled milk and cookies in the second verse represent the things she says,or the impressions she puts in his mind (that she's crazy). Although it's a terrible thing she wants to do,she's still doing it out of love so that she won't hurt him down the road,"A little bit of sugar, but lots of poison too."

"Ooh,honey,do you want me now?" from the third verse was the line that inspired this interpretation, for obvious reasons. When she says she wants to "put him to bed" where he "dies at the end",she actually wants to erase him from her mind so that she'll forget about him sooner and not have to grieve as long over the destroyed relationship, which is further implied from the first line in the fourth verse,"9,10,never wanna see you again."

She knows she "pulls off black so well" because this is a common occurrence for her. The shit behind the curtain that she doesn't want to sugarcoat anymore is her true nature,or what she believes is her true nature, which is what she wants to spare him from. By doing this so dramatically, she hopes he'll second-guess calling her to try to make things work if he possibly wants to when he's alone to himself thinking about all of this.

Just my take on it,though, because I definitely can't relate to murdering my [nonexistent] kidnapper.

Melanie Martinez – Training Wheels Lyrics 8 years ago
The meaning is obvious, but I just really appreciate how weary it sounds. There's desperation, sadness, and hope all mixed into a vial, and her voice acts as the force softly swishing it around. I'm glad the album has a song like this on it because the rest are tinged with this flavor of bitterness, but instead, this is merely serene and calm. Using training wheels as a metaphor for keeping stagnantly safe in a relationship is also just really clever. Such a melody.

One of the bests choruses I've ever heard. Infinitely amazing. It's so feel-good and mature but tongue-in-cheek at the same time. 'Send my love to your new LUH-huh-ver!' Her heavenly background vocals are the best. How does she do it?!

Taylor Swift – Love Story Lyrics 8 years ago
Love Story is one of those songs that destroys the bleak,adult-like mindset I form most times of an unforgiving world full of misery and void of miracles. The first and last lines,"['Cause] we were both young when I first saw you," just sweep me away every time I hear them because...gosh,life is better when you're a child, but true love like this doesn't have to be a young fantasy. Even though Taylor is essentially changing Romeo & Juliet from a tragedy to something that ends happily, she's not being unrealistic about the love these two people have. Most of the song describes how difficult and heartbreaking being in love like this is,and she eventually breaks down during the bridge and doesn't know what to think anymore - that's very real. Suddenly everything turns around, and that is NOT an unrealistic plot twist because life works exactly around these kinds of unforeseen works of wonder. In the end, everything can finally break through to you,and I think most people forget about that. This whole song makes me realize how right my childhood felt and how wrong it feels to give up that hope under the false guise of maturing. You know how my life has been since I've let childlike wonder fade away? - terrible, and ridden with depression. You could definitely see this as going too into the song, but I don't care. Taylor's a lifesaver.

Lana Del Rey – Old Money Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't like to think of this as describing specifically a past relationship. This song always puts me in this humble, sad mood where I feel disconnected from everything and everyone around me,and what I feel from it is a longing for the past in general. It makes me think she's not just missing people or places but feelings and a state of mind she used to have. The world doesn't seem right to her anymore, and she only feels truly connected to her memories. Ever since listening to 'Swan Song',I look back on some of her songs as if she's talking to her older self, and when she says she'll run to them if they call, she conveys this willingness to forget everything she is right now to salvage who she used to be,maybe before what feels like depression overcame her. "Yet still inside,I felt alone for reasons unknown to me," is a line that personally hurts because I do feel alone on a deeper level than most people can really understand. I resonate a lot with the isolation that pervades this song. It makes me feel truer to myself. I hope writing it has helped her too.

Miley Cyrus – Karen Don't Be Sad Lyrics 8 years ago
This song was a huge surprise in such a really out-there album. It makes me somber and sad (kind of ignoring the title's intention),but it's so meaningful. I wish she'd write more things like this because this sounds so relaxing and caring. It's obvious that she's telling this girl named Karen (possibly Karen Carpenter) not to let people make her think that she's worthless and not as beautiful as she truly is,but I'd also like to think Miley's also referring to your inner demons and dark, intrusive thoughts. Karen Don't Be Sad is definitely the best on the album.

The 1975 – An Encounter Lyrics 8 years ago
It's amazing the kind of imagery a simple instrumental can make you imagine. This really does capture that feeling,to me,of perhaps walking through a hallway at school and looking up to see your crush, that special someone walking past you,and everything just slows down and feels eternal. Then, before you know it,they've passed you,and the moment's dissipated, and you're not really sure if what happened was real. Ugh,I love this.

Marina and the Diamonds – Valley of the Dolls Lyrics 8 years ago
I know that this song is based off of the film, but the meaning to me screams depression. "Born with a void hard to destroy with love or hope/Built with a heart broken from the start and now I die slow" have got to be the most powerful lyrics on this album because I've been majorly depressed for so long, and that describes perfectly the hopelessness you feel when no matter what you do or think, your life is pulled back into this dark hole. When you're struggling with this, you usually put on different identities when around other people so that they don't notice your sadness and make you explain everything that makes you "feel like nobody".

More specifically though,I think the song is about sinking back into depression after feeling clean and stable for a while,"Back to zero, here we go again",except this time she's giving up,"I can feel it coming to the end." It's really tranquil and calming to listen to,but it's very sad - a terrible place to be. :(

Marina and the Diamonds – Forget Lyrics 8 years ago
This song literally describes everything I've been and am going through. Sometimes - well, most times - I don't think I can rise above depression anymore, but once it dies down, something keeps me going despite every good reason I have inside to end it all. I have spent my life in debt to my friends and family for being so disconnected and ungrateful and leeching off of their loyalty and help, and I regret being this way. It's all because I can't bring myself to just forget the sadness and all of my insecurities and forgive myself for the constant self-deprecation; that's really what life is about, even according to this song: forgetting that life is difficult doesn't make it so difficult. There is no time to wallow in regret; your life gets shorter by the minute.

Ever since I recognized this deep sadness,I've weighed my epiphanies and my defeats and wondered what life really consisted of. Are we destined for darkness with insignificant, chance sightings of light,or is it that we're just not looking at life in the best way? Not knowing the answer really makes you go insane! Firing and ricocheting from joy to emptiness takes the worst toll on your emotional well-being,but you start to realize that you need to forget taking score.

It kind of seems like when she sings,"Baby, you know," that she's talking to herself. You know, treating herself more gently than she has been because she's at rock bottom, and there's nothing she has to prove and nothing she has that she can lose anymore. I wanna bow out too; I'm tired of worrying about that reputation.

"Yeah,I've been dancing with the devil; I love that he pretends to care if I'll ever get to heaven when a million dollars gets you there." I only recently understood what this line means, honestly. Sadness and all those dark feelings make you think they comfort you and lead you a little more to becoming a genuinely happier person, but these feelings are persistent and daily. They are there to ruin you,and this "heaven" it seemingly cares that you reach is easy (for her) to reach (a million dollars/she's wealthy) and is shallow because that heaven is actually depression and emptiness. This line could mean so many different things though, and that's just my take.

I've definitely wasted a lot of time chasing fantasies such as feeling like I truly fit in with most of society, other people, their interests, and their passions, when I've known deep down that I was born different, unknown whether happily or mistakenly. I go at a slower pace with life, and I admire simple things and nature and strangers that pass by and everything in-between. Nobody wants to stay back and walk with the tortoise,so I've expected and dealt with the unavoidable loneliness of it all. All I can do is forget about it and try my best to live.

My past is full of embarrassment and regret and uncomfortable states of mind, and I'm gonna need leave it all behind some time. It's simply not worth it to keep bringing it up out of the grave and grieving over stupid mistakes that I can't change. I have to follow through with all the philosophies I've told myself I believe in. I need to remember that everything I've done has brought me to where I am and finally feel like I'm on the right track.

The last four lines are really what get me. They're just so comforting and true. Most of our moments of joy come from distraction, and I used to feel so against this. What's the use in hating that fact? Sometimes you have to learn to forget about how much life can feel like shit.

Taylor Swift – Speak Now Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't understand the hate for this song. I never found it to be bitchy or bratty either. She wrote such a unique situation too,and I can relate in a way. I still have feelings for my past geometry teacher, and I finally friended him on Facebook a while ago. I woke up and scrolled through my news feed one day in June, and I saw he posted that he was getting married that day.

It immediately made me think of this song. The woman he married is apparently a pretty rude teacher herself, and she left the school I graduated from after only one year. I didn't much care for her seeing her with him at Prom either,so I felt kind of regretful and listened to this, imagining myself in Taylor's situation. It's a true experience.

There's a weird freedom in the possibility of standing up during someone's wedding and doing the unthinkable,"Don't marry her." I mean, yeah, people would probably hate you for the rest of your life after that, but just because you shouldn't doesn't mean you can't. The bridge of this song describing that is just full of that freeing feeling, and I disagree that it was all in her head while she was watching the wedding. She only says she gets lost in a daydream when she sings the first chorus, and then the bridge is her actually doing it.

More songs like this need to be written, songs describing such unique moments.

Florence + the Machine – Third Eye Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is everything. It's my favorite off of HBHBHB and my favorite by Florence period. I'm just gonna make points, and it's gonna be really disorganized, but I don't care:

- I cried when I first listened to this song. I had been going through so much heartache and figurative punches to the face and worthlessness. I cannot describe the relief I felt from this.

- The "original lifeline" she talks about seems like it could mean two things. It could be the man's heart that was 'originally' there, and it's what he depended on in dark times,or she could be referencing a lifeline in the context of palmistry. In that sense, the lifeline is a line on your palm that dictates how long someone will live, and maybe in the song, she means how long their relationship originally could have lasted had they not broken up before.

- I'm heavily convinced that this song is referring back to Queen of Peace, where the man was in constant grief, but now he just has a hole in his heart since she left. In this song, she's trying to make him know that he deserves to be loved, more than she decided she was able to at the time, and she is that same person but is trying to change.

- I love that after the "I'm the same,I'm trying to change" part, she belts it with all of her might during the last chorus, and you can hear her voice struggling to rise above the drums and the brass. I think that's intentional, like she's trying to drive home the point that she is truly trying for this man. It's like breaking the fourth wall of music, and it's unstoppable in its beauty.

- The bridge is honest to god the best out of any ever to me. I like to hear it as,"Could you pay it as a tribute/The only thing you let hold you/Wear it now like a mantle/Always there to remind you/That your pain is a tribute/The only thing you (in general) let hold you/Wear it now like I meant to/I was there to remind you," because it feels so much more personal and contrite. She learns from her mistake and wants to really help him. Gosh. <3

- The way the instruments, her voice, and the background vocals change is incredible. The way the second chorus has that,"Hooooooo" in the background, and the third one has that vocal that grows into almost a cry. The way the pre-chorus parts build with that one instrument, and it's sounds epic, like from a movie. I don't know what kind of kind of voice she sings with during the bridge, but it's heavenly and ethereal. The way she sings,"I'm the same,I'm the same,I'm trying to change," starting kind of timidly but becoming confident in her words and screaming it by the end. The way she sings those lines last at the end of the song differently. It's all amazing.

- I think she says "And oh,how much" in a rhetorical manner,as in,"Look how much this grief tore you open/Look at how much you deserve as a person."

This song is just everything someone could really need to hear. Thank you,Florence.

Clean Bandit – Stronger Lyrics 8 years ago
I think this is from the perspective of someone who had the chance of love with someone but was either too scared to admit it to them or was scared to love them in general. The first stanza consists of the things they thought they had to do in order to love:

People tell me to be cautious (Don't have a lot of trust for someone)

People tell me not to lose my self-control (Don't be that passionate)

People tell me to be flawless (You have to look and act perfect or else no one will want you)

People tell me not to let myself evolve (Don't let love change you [for the better])

And they're looking back on it and realizing how much of a game that is,and they don't understand it at all now. When they say people will know them by a "different name",I think they're talking about a kind of person who is confident in love and loves openly.

They never used to,holding their breath to the words 'I love you' and not getting wet from [I'm guessing] the 'rain',as in the severity of being in love. They realize that that's asking a lot from your own emotions and well-being,and they wonder if the person they fell for would believe that they DO love them, due to not making it clear/known.

Eventually, they realize they can love, and they tell the other person to love them like they want to,as they'll reciprocate it with certainty now. It's really encouraging, and empowering, and always fun to listen to. :)

Taylor Swift – I Wish You Would Lyrics 8 years ago
I've never understood why this song seemed to be so looked-over. It was immediately one of my favorites as soon as it started. 1989 is composed of songs that become chaotic by the end of each, but it's an exciting chaotic - this song is no different. The bridge just stops everything for her to speak, and it's so emotional. The way she rhymes words and spaces syllables is really unique too. The imagery is also really unexpected. Love it.

Taylor Swift – How You Get The Girl Lyrics 8 years ago
I love how this song builds,"And that's how it works, that's how you get/lost/got the girl."The first chorus has a good sound, the second chorus has that "wiir wiir wiir",then the third chorus has the prominent background vocals. Ugh! It's so good! This song could've been basic and childish if it weren't for how she sings it. It sounds so heartfelt, especially the part right before each chorus, and the ending just explodes into this chaos of happiness and gratitude that things worked out. I'm also a sucker for acoustic guitar bridges. I could only hope she releases this as a single; I've imagined a video for this too many times for her not to. <3

Florence + the Machine – How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful Lyrics 8 years ago
Seeing as how Ship to Wreck and What Kind of Man are her acknowledging how flawed she and her boyfriend are, this song is that feeling of love reborn after two lovers both changed themselves for the better. When they set ablaze everything the past of their relationship did to them, they see everything as immensely beautiful now. What I can't seem to figure out the meanings of though are the first two lines and the stanza right before the building brass section at the end. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, either way.

Florence + the Machine – Delilah Lyrics 8 years ago
I see the album as one big story line, each song continuing right where the previous left off. By the end of 'Queen of Peace',Florence has most likely ended the relationship with the man she talks about in that song. The last two stanzas give the imagery of the sun setting. 'Various Storms and Saints' talks about the mixed feelings about leaving him and has a darker, more mellow sound that makes me think the time-span of that song was the 'night' after that sunset. 'Delilah' starts off with Florence "drifting through halls" in the sunrise. Now,on to the meaning.

The sunrise is obviously freedom, probably from the relationship/feelings she just got over. She's "climbing up the walls" towards it,so she desperately wants this too. However, she's "blinded" by this freedom, and she's so desperate to break herself away from the man she knew and explore the power she has as a woman that she's going around with many men and ruining them, thinking their prose and love is a facade ("Now it's one more boy and it's one more lie).

Delilah was a temptress in the Hebrew Bible,as she heavily betrayed a man named Samson, and this is who Florence is mimicking. The danger of luring men to betrayal is a different kind of danger than falling in love with them, and it's something she's seemingly proud of. The use of imagery of bells ringing and her dancing and calling for her mother (an are-you-proud-of-me? call) show the fun danger of it all,and "pulling the pillars down" refers to toppling the strength of a man, much like in the biblical narrative referenced. "Never knew I was a dancer 'til Delilah showed me how," is such a good line!

It took anything for her to cut the memories of 'that' man out of her life, but despite all the dancing and daylight, she still misses him and even "holds on" for his call. Those lines in parentheses are minuscule voices of her heart that show that she's really not over him either. "Too fast for freedom," she tried moving on too quickly; "Sometimes it all falls down," her high is over and she's crashed; "These chains never leave me,I keep dragging them around," she realizes that she still has feelings tied to this man. The "strung up,strung out" stanza also serves as a moment back to reality, where she knows she's still in emotional pain, and "why can't he let her know" how he feels, what they are now, etc.

A really great song.

Florence + the Machine – Queen of Peace Lyrics 8 years ago
Like the other meanings propose,Florence is the one who tries to keep peace in the relationship, but the man always ruins it.

"Oh,the king/Gone mad within his suffering/Called out for relief/Someone cure him of his grief"

The man she's with is suffering from something that happened in his recent past, and the fact that she says "someone" makes it seem like this has been going on for quite a while. She still cares deeply for his happiness, and the "someone" has this connotation of desperation.

"His only son/Cut down but the battle won/Oh,what is it worth/When all that's left is hurt"

I think the "son" is something special of his that he had to sacrifice in order to resolve whatever situation arose in the past. She's wondering if giving up whatever it was was worth it since it's left him in constant grief.

"Like the stars chase the sun/Over the glowing hill,I will conquer/Blood is running deep/Some things never sleep"

She's proclaiming that she will overcome his grief because he is important and close to her ("blood runs deep"),reiterating how this grief is relentless.

"Suddenly,I'm overcome/Dissolving like the setting sun/Like a boat into oblivion/'Cause you're driving me away"

She might not be strong enough to overcome his grief,as it overcomes her now. She's breaking down and can't help him because he drives her away with how he acts or what he says.

"Now you have me on the run/The damage is already done/Come on,is this what you want/'Cause you're driving me away"

They are really growing apart now,due to the things he's said or done to her. She still has a concern for him, wondering if the hurtful things he says are out of grief...or out of true feelings.

"Oh,the queen of peace/Always does her best to please/Is it any use/Somebody's gotta lose"

Trying to make him happy doesn't work and she's close to giving up. She's always the one to lose that battle.

"Like a long scream/Out there always echoing/Oh,what is it worth/When all that's left is hurt"

His grief is prominent in their relationship, and it's always in the background of their intimacy. In the last two lines,I think she's referring back to the second stanza AND also drawing attention to how their relationship is pain due to that scream.

"And my love is no good/Against the fortress that it made of you/Blood is running deep/Sorrow that you keep"

He can't be helped,at least not by her. His grief has made him so complicated that although she still cares for him,he is knowingly more attentive to his grief.

The last repeating stanzas imply that she will probably always be driven away until she finally ends the relationship. Despite the depressing theme though, the orchestra-like music is grand and amazing. :D
