The site says that I submitted these lyrics, but I didn't. I don't know what song they actually are or where they came from.

AURORA – Awakening Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is about a girl attempting suicide by drowning herself. It's unclear if she actually dies. AURORA has said that the song "ends in light," which could mean that the girl rises back to the surface of the water and survives, or that she reaches heaven or some sort of afterlife.

Ben Sollee – Prettiest Tree on the Mountain Lyrics 7 years ago
I had the pleasure of seeing Ben in concert, and he introduced this song by explaining that he had a girlfriend who he moved to California for, but it didn't work out so he came back home. The song is about his anger and disappointment.

AURORA – Warrior Lyrics 8 years ago
"I call myself a warrior even though I’ve never held a sword or anything else that can hurt people physically, but people have fights in their lives, small and and big. And it’s a nice thought, that people can walk around and call themselves warriors, which they should do, whether they’re a fan of me or not. It’s strong. It’s important to remember that, how strong we are." - Aurora

AURORA – Through the Eyes of a Child Lyrics 8 years ago
This seems to be one of the songs closest to Aurora's heart. I was fortunate enough to hear her sing this in concert, and by the end of it, almost everyone in the audience was moved to tears. At the end, we forgot to clap and just stood there in silence for what felt like a very long time. It was an incredible moment.

AURORA – I Went Too Far Lyrics 8 years ago
"We sometimes go too far for the approval and love of someone else, when we should really just learn to love ourselves and that should be enough.” - Aurora in an interview

AURORA – Home Lyrics 8 years ago
These are not the lyrics to the song 'Home' by Aurora from All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend. It's a completely different song.

AURORA – Conqueror Lyrics 8 years ago
Aurora said this in an interview:
"'Conqueror’ is about a world that is kind of falling apart around you, and you’re looking for a conqueror to save you. But you’re looking for the conqueror in someone else, which I think is something you should not do. You should find the conqueror in yourself first, and be your own hero. If you stand strong, then you will stand for a bit longer."

The Weepies – Hideaway Lyrics 8 years ago
This song means that there are a lot of things in the world that will hurt you and get you down, but what you need to do is what you feel is right, not what anyone else says. Most importantly, know that it's okay to step back and take a break from all the pressure that people put on you. It's okay to hideaway.

This is a great song to wake up to - it just puts me in a good mood for the rest of the day. One of my favorite songs right now.

Belle & Sebastian – I'm a Cuckoo Lyrics 9 years ago
I always thought that this song was written from the perspective of a troubled parent, who for some reason lost his/her child and is slowly reuniting with them. The first verse is a memory of when the child was little, while the rest of the song is chronicling their getting to know each other again. The parent is mentally unstable (a cuckoo, at night the fever grows it's pounding pounding, i'm not thinking well today) and wondering if he/she should "stay away" and let go of their child (breaking off is misery). At the end he/she is asking the child to understand that he/she needs their help, but it doesn't seem like he/she does (you're staying with your friends tonight).
I know that my interpretation is pretty different from others, but that's what the song has meant to me. This is a very sad, sort of questioning and lost song. I love it!

Missy Higgins – Secret Lyrics 9 years ago
I used to think that "where I'm from there is a lock and key" had something to do with locking up her secrets and keeping her love behind closed doors, but then I learned that in some messed-up "sex education" curriculums they teach kids that girls are the lock and boys are the key. It's pretty cool that Missy used this line in her song to mean that she couldn't fit into that black-and-white idea of love.

Belle & Sebastian – Another Sunny Day Lyrics 9 years ago
Love this song!!!
When I first heard it, I thought that instead of "you've got the attic window looking out on the cathedral," it was "looking at all the good people," which I still like the idea of.

Lucinda Williams – Ventura Lyrics 9 years ago
I always thought that this song was about the ocean itself. Like her 'hidden obsession' was with the ocean. She needs to leave the land and see the sea again; she wishes so much she was 'somewhere else.' When I was having a hard time in my life, I became totally obsessed with the ocean and 'haven't spoken to no one,' just like in the song. I wouldn't let my friends in and became convinced that only the waves could make me me again. That's probably not what Lucinda meant as she wrote, but that's what it means to me.

Lucinda Williams – I Lost It Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree that this song could be about love, but to me it was always about going insane. The line about blowing away especially cemented that for me, like she didn't need someone to love, just someone to keep her from totally losing it. It's a sad, heartfelt song either way.

Lucinda Williams – Copenhagen Lyrics 9 years ago
This song broke my heart so much when I first heard it that I refused to listen to it again for a year. It's about someone dying far away from the narrator, who loves them very, very much. The whole thing sounds rather wistful, like she wished she could say goodbye. The one ray of hope is that the person is now in a better place (somewhere spinning 'round the sun, circling the moon). So beautiful.

The B-52's – Channel Z Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about getting away from the media and society (Channel Z). It mentions fast food, pollution, a market crash, space junk, narrow minds, and bombs. The person speaking wants to get away from it all, just get it out of his head. Not much else to say :)

The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics 9 years ago
@[spamuell:2846] I always heard the chorus as being about gay rights, but I didn't think anyone else did. I like to think of it both ways, as being a pro-gay rights anthem and a portrait of a painfully shy person.

The Wailin' Jennys – Storm Comin' Lyrics 9 years ago
This song has a pretty clear meaning. It's about letting the inevitable happen, and being brave enough to accept that, as well as letting love in. I love how empowering this song can be when you're down.

The Wailin' Jennys – Swing Low Sail High Lyrics 9 years ago
The narrator has (as is clearly stated) failed someone they love and want forgiveness. But beyond that, I think that they are also just pondering life (and death, in the last verse) "I have waited, I have waited...but there's no one who makes it all come true," makes me think that they are realizing that they really love the person, and life, and that they're really ready to "look the whole thing in the eye." This is a powerful song that feels like it was written right before the narrator goes back to the person they love, and the life they want to live, and confronts their fears as a stronger person than they were recently. This song always puts me in a good mood :)

The Be Good Tanyas – Broken Telephone Lyrics 9 years ago
Some of the lyrics make me think that they're in love and fine, but the chorus seems like she's trying to break up whoever she's in love with. "I'm always drawing your colors, I'm always tracing your footsteps," made me think that she had spent to much time loving and adoring him, and that she needed to break up with him so she had something else to live for. I really don't know, but "there's nothing wrong with you," sounds a lot like a break up line. Any other ideas?

Ben Sollee – Boys Don't Cry Lyrics 9 years ago
I think that this is about more than just boys not crying, it's about all gender stereotypes. "I find some men beautiful, some girls handsome," is (I think) the heart of the song.

Sarah Jarosz – Edge of a Dream Lyrics 9 years ago
Whether it's about prom night or not, I think that this is all about the uncertainty of growing up. She doesn't quite know where she fits in, and is a little scared to 'take a chance.' She's trying to take more risks and 'figure this life out,' and the song ends with her finding a place that feels safe - at least for tonight.

Deb Talan – Unraveling Lyrics 9 years ago
This song means a lot to me. The person in the story is 'unravelling' or going crazy, possibly because of a lost love (you never get your old skin back once you have loved like that). The person they loved is 'inside you' and the person speaking is urging them to 'cut him out' or permanently force him out of his or her life. I get the sense that there isn't much time left before the person unravels entirely...

Deb Talan – A Bird Flies Out Lyrics 9 years ago
I'm a bit confused about the meaning of this song, but the chorus makes me think that she's falling in love but she's not sure of herself. The lyrics about 'someone who is real' makes me think that she fell in love with someone who wasn't real before, like someone who lied about their identity or seemed like one thing from afar but was different in person. 'What do I want to feel?' is a line I can really relate to, wondering what kind of love and what kind of person you want. It's all about uncertainty: "It's a strange beginning...Is this the right time?...nervous fingers...maybe I'm too jaded to love somebody like you." We never find out if it works out for them.

Deb Talan – Two Points Lyrics 9 years ago
I think that this is about a man being unfaithful or half-breaking up with a woman because of the line 'he is doing his dance to go and stay at the same time.' She loves him, but she gets the sense that he will never really love her the way she loves him (I can never make you mine). The line 'so we could be together with no thoughts of yesterday,' makes me think that something may have happened in their past that is haunting them or causing problems for them. Whatever the cause, their relationship is not working.

Deb Talan – The Darkest Season Lyrics 9 years ago
I think that this song is about losing or being away from someone. It's winter, and she's missing the person 'even though it's been a year.' In the second verse it seems like she's trying to forget (enough) but in the fourth verse, she explains that in more detail. She has moved on and is 'alright on my own' but still misses the person. I totally relate to this feeling of half wanting to forget so it doesn't hurt anymore and half wanting the person back.

Deb Talan – Tenderness Lyrics 9 years ago
I think that this song is about a failed relationship. The narrator's ex now has a wife, but the narrator doesn't seem to be moving on. She's trying to figure out how she feels about their relationship: was it right? Was it wrong? I think that the lines about being remembered mean that society is judging her, so the ex might have been married to someone else while they were in love, or that their romance was forbidden for some other reason. This is a soft, tender song that I really love :)

Deb Talan – Saturn's Light Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about love. The narrator is very lonely and rather lost without it, and is looking for 'good love' making me think that she's had experiences with bad love in the recent past. The first few verses are about her own love and how she needs it so badly. She goes so far as to say she can't breathe without it. The last verse is more about other people's love and how everyone wants and needs it to live.

Deb Talan – My Favorite Coat Lyrics 9 years ago
On the surface, this song is about a girl and her coat, that keeps her warm and safe in the rain. But if you dig deeper, the coat could be a person who comforts her or a mental barrier to keep out everything she doesn't want to think about. The rain is 'crying a torrent' which makes you think it's a bad thing, but it's also 'washing us clean.' What if the 'coat' is keeping her from being 'washed clean' and trapping her in the past? However, the last line could be interpreted as meaning that the rain is washing both her and her coat clean, which makes it more likely that the coat is a person who is standing by her and helping her through life.

Deb Talan – How Will He Find Me Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about someone who is very insecure and rather scared of the world outside (only held by gravity, faded with uncertainty). She feels a little like she is falling apart (everything comes crashing in; there's a well inside of me that never runs dry) but is holding it together (the music and the hope for love keep me alive) as she searches for love. I relate so much!

Deb Talan – A Bridge Lyrics 9 years ago
The chorus feels really free and in love, but the verses have always felt more ominous to me. The 'wanting ache' line and first verse make me think about addiction, and when she describes him as having 'the steady gaze of a snake' it makes me picture him about to pounce. I find the last line really chilling: 'I will be waiting for you on the other side.' The other side is probably death, which makes me think that the Bridge has been a way to die all along, and she wants him to die with her (it could be wide enough for two), possibly by suicide. I really don't know for sure, but that's what the song sounds like to me. I'm probably wrong.

The Velvet Underground – Stephanie Says Lyrics 9 years ago
@[katherinealbin:2824] Yes, he did, and there are more similarities than just the name. 'what country shall I say is calling from across the world' relates to how she chose her name in the story, and 'it's all in her mind' has to do with how she blamed herself for her mother's death when it wasn't her fault. All of the guilt was 'in her mind.' And, of course, 'she's not afraid to die' fits the story perfectly.
Love that book, love this song!

Missy Higgins – If I’m Honest Lyrics 9 years ago
This song has a pretty clear meaning: she was in love with someone. Now they don't love her anymore. She still loves them. She's doing things to try to forget, which could also mean drugs and alcohol, as well as the things specifically mentioned. I can really relate to this song, having been separated from someone I love and not being able to get over them. The song ends without her finding closure, but I like to imagine that she's okay now.

Missy Higgins – Katie Lyrics 9 years ago
I think that this song means something a little different to everyone. Most of the other comments are people connecting the song to a disorder/depression/disability/abuse - whatever they have experienced in their own lives. That's what makes this song so special: that it is speaking to everyone who has ever gone through a hard time, whatever kind of hardship that was. Thank you Missy for writing such a powerful song!
