Jethro Tull – Wond'ring Again Lyrics 5 years ago
I always loved the line "when the Eve bitten apple returned to destry the tree". The devastation depicted in the song is all a consequence of disobedience to God, AKA sin. The disobedience of our first parents set the world up for what it has become. I personally think the final outcome is better described Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven. Specifically:
"And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune,
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long,
And the forests will echo with laughter."

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 5 years ago
I believe the "bunch of pagans" wrote those lyrics for the same reason I believe Caiaphas, the corrupt high priest of Jesus' day, made the statement in John 11:49-50 about one man dying for the whole nation, Caiaphas didn't know what he was saying. In the same way, I believe the lyrics in these songs were inspired.
Have you ever read songwriter's comments about how songs come to them? Many of them describe instances when songs come to mind so quickly they can barely write them down. I happen to believe the two songs mentioned in the comment, which received airplay around the same time, were inspired to convey what I stated in the comment. It's my 2¢ and I'm sticking to it.

Kansas – Dust In The Wind Lyrics 6 years ago
@[jimraw1:32638] I'm glad to hear the composer moved on from the pessimism in that beautifully written song. It's encouraging to know that as he moved toward Jesus, his pessimism slipped away.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – From the Beginning Lyrics 7 years ago
How about considering a deeper meaning?
What if it the song causes us to pause and reflect on the events in our life and how they brought us to where we are? Might we perhaps consider the Creator who says He "inhabits eternity" and "knows the end from the beginning"?
Rock stars aren't theologians, but the Spirit which hovered over the earth at it's creation still works in the minds of men and inspires things they themselves are unaware of.
Just my 2¢.

Kansas – Dust In The Wind Lyrics 7 years ago
This is a reflection of human understanding apart from God.
If we don't realize that we are created beings, created for a purpose, then we have no hope and the thought of being dust in the wind is depressing. That is so because our Creator has set "eternity in the human heart" (Ecclesiates 3:11). The writer of Ecclesiates had the same frustration when he wrote (Ecclesiates 1:2) "all is meaningless".
The song should give pause and trigger that thought of eternity. Why are we aware of it if we cannot aspire to it? Therein begins one's search for the God who "made the world and everything in it [and] is the Lord of heaven and earth". And He is not far from any of us.

Being an American, I never caught the lyric "Beginning in a queue", until I got older and learned of the British meaning of the word. I remember listening to this song on my transistor radio waiting for the bus to take me to high school.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 7 years ago
This song came out around the same time as Jethro Tull's "My God".
To me both songs speak of God and His realm in a way that's different from what is traditionally taught and believed.
"My God" exposes ritualistic religion as shallow and disconnected from the real truth about God.
Stairway alludes to a God - the piper, the May queen - who will clear away the falsehoods that surround people's understanding of what He ultimately has in store for the people created in His image.
The line "Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on." is a statement of the purpose of Jesus' sacrifice, a second chance for humanity.
The final phrase promising what the tune will reveal to the diligent listener: "When all are one and one is all", echoes what Jesus asked His Father for on the night He was betrayed, (John 17:20-21) "I pray also for those who will believe in me through their [His disciple's] message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you."
No, rock musicians are not theologians, but the Spirit that inspired the Bible is the one Ian Anderson reminds us of in the lyric of "My God" - "He's inside you and me".
If you're a little curious you can discover that the Old Testament prophet Daniel had something to say about people shining brightly and wanting others to know why in Daniel 12:3, check it out.
