The B-52's – Dance This Mess Around Lyrics 22 days ago
@rikdad101@[yahoo:50555].com I never thought of that, always thought repeating Just a limburger was a bit strange. Just a limber girl is brilliant!

I also always thought after "before you break my heart" it wasn't "think it over" but "Casanova".

Elvis Costello – I'm Not Angry Lyrics 5 months ago
@[karmakgb:48918] Good point about the use of "original sin". He sings "an original sin", whereas in the biblical use it is just original sin, no article before it. Although if he is deploring her lack of originality with her "sin", he must either be self righteous about not sinning or else be throwing himself in the pool of deplorable for not being able to pull off an original sin, since there is no such thing as one (according to him). Maybe he's admitting that he has done the same "sin" to her, so what she did is not original to their relationship and he has no right to be angry. He's obviously angry though, and one can do something to hurt another and still be angry when that person does the same to them.

@[Kenny5271957:48853] I think you have a good interpretation. Not sure Lennon ever thought he was a genius though. I'm more inclined to think he found it amusing that people thought he was a genius, but I didn't know the man so that's just speculation. I wonder also, who's to say that living superficially isn't really living? It's living differently than taking the time and effort to care about others that are suffering, for instance, but is that not living?

Belly (US) – Dusted Lyrics 9 months ago
@[danbailey80:47824]
Absolutely love the song but never have made much sense of the lyrics, even though I find the lyrics compelling. When you say it's about rape, I can see that in the lyrics, and it makes the song a bit less joyful to listen to. Typical for her lyrics, they are rather obscure and seem more image-driven than decipherable, at least to me.

@[androgybunny:45790] That's basically what I thought, based solely on the only two words that I could either understand or made any sense at all to me: conversation fear. I'm just 1.5 years younger than Michael Stipe and if he had/has social anxiety I can tell you one big difference between us - he has been able to make a name for himself despite, or because, of it. That's still an inspiration to me.

Lindsey Buckingham – Underground Lyrics 1 year ago
@[dan1102180:45653] For sure, and nice and simply stated lyrically. I'm most curious about use of heart instead of soul. It's common to say selling your soul for something you want, going against your values to get it. Giving up your heart to attain something you want, or giving your heart to someone just to get something else you want? Giving up the person you love (or getting a person you don't love) to chase your dreams? While he is lying in bed with his lover, like that lover is not the one he he really loves? I've never been good at interpreting lyrics.

Big Head Todd & the Monsters – Monument in Green Lyrics 1 year ago
One of may favorites by this band. The song is beautiful and feels so personal, especially where he goes into narrative of the dead subject speaking about his generations of offspring and says "maybe one of them is you". I feel a kinship to the people of the U.S. when I hear that, part of a bigger whole.

Warren Zevon – Mutineer Lyrics 1 year ago
@[scumbagstyle:45280] It wasn't until I really paid attention to this song that it became one of my favorites of WZ. Love and hope and a sense of total trust that the person he is singing this to is on board with him, can't quite find the right words for what I mean, but it's very intimate, like only they understand. With the weary tone I think more of someone who shuns society's norms than of criminality and decadence.

@[aangelene:44838] Is A live version. On the live 1969 double album/CD, the lyrics are again different. Lou obviously wasn't too hung up on the exact lyrics. And I like the 1969 version better than the studio version.

The Rolling Stones – Factory Girl Lyrics 1 year ago
@[indierod:44483] Personally don't think there was any particular female in mind. I think it was more about the song than someone, but I didn't write it and haven't looked for what Jagger or Richards may have said about the inspiration so I don't know.

As for the Irish/American thing, it's definitely got an Appalachia feel to it, and Appalachian music having derived primarily from the British Isles, it's not surprising that it could also have an Irish feel. With those traditional Irish instruments conga and tabla.

Probably my favorite Pretenders tune, at least the one that gets me the most wound up. The staccato lyrics are part of what put this song over the top for me - so frantic and grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Cake – Nugget Lyrics 2 years ago
@[MintyDinty:39915] Given McCrea\'s known activism and the causes he supports, I get the feeling that he is singing (speaking) his real view on the issues and the chorus is the targets of his criticisms telling him to shut up. Not an uncommon response from people who abuse power - they try to paint the abused people who speak up as complainers, to try to discredit them. Maybe he\'s gotten that reaction from people/issues he\'s spoken against.

@[coolanalyst:39333] Now that I've watched several live performances online, both with Calexico and with Sam solo (not a chore to listen to different takes on the song!), I get "path Virginia's laid", which really fits the song more. Maybe it sounding similar to "pair of Virginia's legs" is intentional.

Tom Waits – Telephone Call from Istanbul Lyrics 2 years ago
I like the thoughts going into the previous interpretations. I see it as an ode to a love returning home. The whole drug aspect seems out of character for a Waits song. Sure he references stuff like booze a lot, but not the hard drugs in these metaphorical ways so much, as far as I know.

Mostly to me it's his typical colorful use of language to paint a feeling, much of which I don't think is even intended to mean anything in particular, or something only he would know but just fits the feel. Like for, all I know, Beulah's refers to Beulah's Kitchen in Middletown, California. Here's a line from a review: "Funky tiny little breakfast/lunch stop. It looks like a shack from outside." Sounds like a restaurant Waits would appreciate if he found it. And there is a Dry Creek right outside of town there.

@[Rag:37675]-Land

I hope it doesn't get you too down - like any song or poem it can mean whatever it makes you think it means. Go with the impression it makes on you - your mind gives it the meaning for you. The songs that really disappoint me are tunes I love but have never even listened to the lyrics, then finally listen and find something vapid or truly offensive.

Elton John – Razor Face Lyrics 3 years ago
I came here looking to see what people made of the name Razorface. As the song title, it seems like there is significance to the name itself, not just BT filing in a blank - "Oh, I don't know, I'll just call him...Razorface". Freshmegamix ties it to cocaine use, which I see as fitting and maybe that's it. For those who don't think the song is about cocaine - what is the significance of the name then? Krotch makes it an old jazz musician nickname, although that doesn't shed light on how the name came about.

Pink Floyd – Pigs (Three Different Ones) Lyrics 4 years ago
Often overlooked Floyd album that sometimes I think is my favorite of theirs. Regarding the first two pigs, consider that they don't have to be about anyone in particular, just a class of people, although very well could have a central inspirational person. Thatcher is often speculated as the second pig. As has been pointed out, many of the "clues" mentioned here couldn't be clues because they occurred well after the song was written (which had its inspiration well before the album's 1977 release), like the Falklands battle, Thatcher's policies (she wasn't the leader until years later). But Thatcher was becoming a big player in politics at the time so could have been the inspiration, or part of it at least.

Neil Young – White Line Lyrics 5 years ago
White Line can obviously be a reference to cocaine or speed, but I can also take the lyrics as a straight-away song about betrayed love. I wouldn't put it past Neil to write it earnestly just about lost love but intentionally making it a double-meaning to throw people in a tizzy. But I've never met the man, so maybe I. way off.
