B.W. Stevenson – My Maria Lyrics 7 years ago
@[LorenzoSeitz:18913] Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing. Maria could just be a nickname for marijuana. The lyrics certainly make sense in that context. But then again, it could just be about a girl. Who knows.

Great song, but does anyone know what "guess I'll start it all again" means?

Simon and Garfunkel – Keep The Customer Satisfied Lyrics 7 years ago
What the hell is wrong with everyone on here? Everything is about drugs with you people.... This song is clearly about a musician(possibly Simon himself) who is having a hard time in the industry trying to keep his fans and critics happy. It has nothing to do with drugs.

Crowded House – Don't Dream It's Over Lyrics 7 years ago
Seems a lot of people interpret it as a relationship song, which it could be. It's great if you interpret it that way, however, it's hard to ignore the fact that the song means more than that.

Some key lyrics:

"There is freedom within, there is freedom without."

This lyric almost seems like a mantra of sorts. Perhaps trying to find inner peace and separate themselves from the world.

"In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page"

There's lot's of bad stuff going on in the world that most people just brush off. They would rather ignore them and go to the entertainment section. Whatever keeps their mind occupied rather than hearing about the terrible things going on in the world.

"Don't let them win."

This is an important lyric, and it comes at the end of the song. It upsets me that so many artists that cover this song leave this lyric out. It basically sums up the meaning of the song. The message is clear, as bad as this get in life, don't let the world get the best of you. Don't give them the satisfaction of winning.

Neil Young – Cowgirl In The Sand Lyrics 8 years ago
@[sliceer:10131] I've read somewhere that Neil is actually singing about himself in this song so it's possible. I think the song is about Neil having a hard time adjusting to fame, wanting to change his name and hide away. "when so many love you is it the same?" would make a lot more sense with this meaning. So many love him because he's famous.

Phil Ochs – Changes Lyrics 8 years ago
First heard this song performed by Neil Young. He said some kind words about Phil Ochs before he sang it. I had to look up Phil Ochs later that day. He's an amazing songwriter. This song is beautiful.

@[mossyoak83:5212] actually it's important to the song. It's literally in the lyrics. "From Maryln to Madonna" "Headed for the big divorce California style"

Bob Seger – Ship of Fools Lyrics 8 years ago
I suppose this is what some would call a "throwaway song". On the album just to fill space. Which is why it's not very popular. Despite that it's one of my favorite Seger songs.

The song is full of metaphors. Most of which too complex to try and interpret. But the feeling I get from this song is one of isolation. The protagonist in the song is a loner and has never felt like he fit into the "ship of fools".
