Let's Be Friends (Skin to Skin)

It's funny how these songs hit people so differently. Maybe more so with Bruce than any other artist. I actually find this to be one of favorites from the The Rising along with Nothing Man. This is a fun song with a true "E" street groove and fell to it. I know the Rising is supposed to be serious and solemn, but on this tune and Mary's Place--fun is where it's at. I never read anything about race into it--could be--but I didn't dive deep. To me it's what it appears to be--a guy has his eye on a chick he digs--he makes his move and wants to get naked with her. He feels they've a lot in common (walking down that same line) and maybe there's been gossip about then or they are already an item--but between the two of them--they need to tear down the false fronts that prevent a true relationship and communing of spirits.

anyway, i think it is about a guy's desire for a certian woman, but she doesnt notice it. maybe they have been friends for a long time, but he likes her and she doesnt realize it. then the perfect time rolls along and he asks her to be his girlfriend or something, saying "dont know when this chance might come again..." they could have had arugements in the past but he wants to put them behind him "The time has come te let the past be history".

Well, this one comes in the middle of The Rising--a weird choice given that the subject matter of the rest of the album is all about 9/11. Except that now comes the rumor that Bruce is connected to a 9/11 widow and she could be who the song is about. Bruce has written before about falling in love (even while married to someone else--as on Tunnel of Love) and I wonder if this is the same sort of song. A song about infidelity connected to 9/11.

My guess is this song was left over from the Lucky Town/ Human Touch sessions and he wanted some filler. This song doesn't sound at all like the rest of the Rising (weakest song on the album by far) and has that "other band" feel to it.

If you take into account this album was a reflection of the attacks of 9/11 I think the song title makes it clear. Two different people, different races. It is to me an Anti-racism song. Or given the upbeat nature of the song, pro-diversity fits better.

well i think the guy wants her as something more than a friend but he just can't be something else than that. so he says let's be friends because he knows it, and the girl doesn't want him as a boyfriend or sth like that. he tries to stablish a friendship with her although he wants something more. i may be wrong but that's what i think.

I definitely think this is a song about people who are two different races. I can see how people might think it's romantic but he put on the album for a reason. Probably inspired by all the racism that sprung up after 9/11...

I don't necessarily think it's a romantic song either - it could just be about two guys who want to be friends. This is one of my favorite songs from The Rising - it's kind of bittersweet but undeniably positive and beautiful.

I think its about becoming friends with someone you've had a bad history with.

It's a song that reflects Bruce's love affair with Patti..............
