Astral Weeks seems like one of those records no one should even try to cover anything from, but The Waterboys do it and do it well here. Folding in the bit of "Blackbird" is an inspired choice too! |

Jakob Dylan's "All Day and All Night" bears a strong resemblance to this song, especially in the first verse. I'd guess it was an intentional homage. |

Fantastic song. I wish Dennis had stuck around long enough to outrun his demons like Brian has. I bet he had some more gems in him like this, "River Song" and (The Beach Boys') "Forever." |

20 years on and I feel like I'm just now understanding this song. A poignant lament about not fitting in with the church or the world (as well as being a sweet requiem for the late, great Chagall Guevara). |

@[joe1133247:4252] I would love to know as well, although a part of me is happy with it being track 6 & 7 from Here's Where the Strings Come in, "Detroit Has a Skyline" and "Eastern Terminal," which along with track 8, "Animated Airplanes Over Germany" will always and forever be my favorite in-flight soundtrack. |

I am fairly confident that this song is a prequel of sorts to "Damn These Vampires," released one year earlier on All Eternals Deck. Musically and lyrically they seem tied together, especially the naïve new vampire of this song saying "God bless all vampires every night," who then becomes the jaded, worn voice saying, "God damn these vampires for what they've done to me." |

I'm not entirely sure what it means on a line-by-line basis, but in general, it seems to be an expanding of the definition of love and a revelation of a holy light of love that makes other loves seem dim by comparison (the "darkest light" of the summer love left behind). Much deeper than a song called "Seventeen" has any right to be. |

Not sure if this was intentional or not (I'm guessing it was, seeing as they both came from the same scene) but this song quotes/echoes Damien Jurado's Wedding Cake in the chorus.

a) The Sunset Tree is FAR from the first Mountain Goats album. b) If it's the only one you like, you need your ears (and head, and heart) examined. |

| The Hold Steady – The Sweet Part of the City Lyrics

There's an obvious (and I would venture to guess, intentional) parallel between this song and Van Morrison's "Saint Dominic's Preview."
SPotC: "It's a long way from Cedar-Riverside to Cedar Sinai, three times St. Paul to Cheyenne/ And it's a long way from Sacramento, too."
SDP: "And it's a long way to Buffalo/ It's a long way to Belfast city, too." |

I think the majority of this is great as well, although one other quibble I'd raise is that the "scale maps of the ocean floor" is (I believe) just a word picture about how deep the laugh lines have become on their faces (possibly facial distortion from too much drug use?) |

Whoops. Just realized this is a cover of a Prince Buster song which actually predates the other two (I think). I guess I still have much to learn. :) |

I was just listening to some old school reggae the other day and noticed something I hadn't heard before (or ever heard anyone reference):
"Hey you, don't watch that
Watch this!"
________
This is a reference to The Ethiopians' "Reggae Hit the Town," which contains the lyric, "Don't watch that one/ watch this one"
________
"This is the heavy heavy monster sound"
________
This is a reference to Dave & Ansel Collins' "Monkey Spanner," which contains the lyric, "This is a heavy heavy monster sound"
________
I would guess there are probably other references here, with these two being so obvious when you hear them. If anyone recognizes any, let me know! |

I used this song in a mix I put together for my wife's grandfather's funeral. It actually ended up playing right as the priest was approaching the body to bless it, a really prominent placement, and just seemed perfect. |
