I think this is about a memory. The start reflects seeing a girlfriend from long ago, through older and more compassionate eyes, seeing her for the relative child she is, and regretting that his older self was not there to warn her back then. He's talking to the young girl he once knew, warning her not to act on her infatuation, because it's not a solid situation or relationship, despite what her imagination tells her. I believe he wants to warn her not to give in to her attraction and desire, not to rush into sex because she could get pregnant and be left alone. It ends by urging her to go without looking back, in case her resolve weakens. |
