She was only a child
Someone to hold on
Only a child
Someone to believe in
Only a child
Someone to love... Ah...

She was seventeen
Beauty queen
I met her in a magazine
Heart of fire
Love's desire
Reachin' out higher, higher

Run away
One more day
A broken-hearted child at play
I pray for you
Baby Blue
In the name of love I reach for you

In the darkness
Comes the evil of the night
Think about it

You better wait
Stop yourself before you fall
You better wait
Stop before you lose it all
Somewhere there's love, love
Oh, somewhere, some way

Precious girl
Little pearl
Temptation is a lonely world
Eyes deceive
They believe
In everything they wanna see, yeah

And the neon lights
Reflect your life
Only you know where you hide, baby

You better wait
Stop yourself before you fall
You better wait
Stop before you lose it all
'Cause somewhere there's love, love
You better wait

Stop yourself before you start
You better wait
Don't look back, don't lose heart

Don't look, don't look
Don't look back, babe
Ah... Don't...

Ah...
Don't look, don't look
Don't look back, baby

I think this is about a memory.

The start reflects seeing a girlfriend from long ago, through older and more compassionate eyes, seeing her for the relative child she is, and regretting that his older self was not there to warn her back then.

He's talking to the young girl he once knew, warning her not to act on her infatuation, because it's not a solid situation or relationship, despite what her imagination tells her. I believe he wants to warn her not to give in to her attraction and desire, not to rush into sex because she could get pregnant and be left alone.

It ends by urging her to go without looking back, in case her resolve weakens.

My Interpretation

I think this song has a slightly different meaning. It starts off talking about a pretty 17 yr old that is wanted by everyone but loved by none. She feels unloved so she decides to run away and become a "professional" to be loved. He's telling her to wait and not give in to her need instant gratification. "In the Darkness comes Evil in the night" refers to the men that see her in the night. "Neon lights, reflect your life", refers to the neon lights on the buildings that she walks at night. He keeps telling her to "Stop! Yourself before you fall, Stop yourself before you lose it all, somewhere there's love.....YOU BETTER WAIT!" He's telling her to wait to find love, it's out there somewhere.

I know this is a darker interpretation, but I think he may be referring to an old female friend that fell victim to that lifestyle.

My Interpretation

@BlueBox \r\n\r\nI agree with your interpretation, mine is same even before I read your comments. This is a young 1 yr old girl, raised in an unloving environment. Like a bee to honey, they grasp at being \'desired\' equating to love. So this young unskilled child is trying to find her way in the world....being "desired" is a form of "love" in her young mind. "I met her in a magazine...", her listing. "Run away, One more day, A broken-hearted child at play". Before getting trapped into that lifestyle, "You better wait\r\nStop yourself...

Nothing like getting it from the artists own head:

Q: How would you describe "You Better Wait," the first single from the new album? A: The city is a magnet, and kids gravitate toward it because they can finally leave the nest. The only problem is, sometimes you can get lost on the streets, and when young people get lost on the streets they sometimes don't get back. That's what the song is about.
