"A tree for all these problems, they can't find you for the moment." You have figured out a quick (but desperate) and temporary solution to a problem in life. Your solution will be about as effective as scaling a tree to hide or be safe- it will work for a few minutes, but eventually you will have to come back down to face the real problem, be it a grizzly bear or a life event. "Then for all past efforts, they're buried deep beneath your heart and somewhere in your stomach." Your "past efforts" have been past struggle and growth, ie difficult life experiences that you learned from and grew from; even though you grew from them, the memory and any pain or sadness will always be with you in some way. These memories are so deeply buried in some of us that they are not just in our symbolic organ of sentiment and love (the heart) but they are even deeper (surgically or anatomically), in our stomach. "And hey transform all others, when awful people they surround you." This is pretty straightforward: Make the world around you a better place, make people around you better, etc. Don't just hate awful (or evil or dishonest, etc) people; transform them! "Well ain't they just like monsters. They come to feed on us, giant little animals for us." This one's more of a stretch, but here's my idea: When these awful people get together into groups, they become angry mobs and mobs are violent and stupid. A person who would normally be perfectly lawful, kind, and reasonable on their own becomes a lunatic in a mob or in another group (a clique, etc). The sheer savagery and cruelty of which people in groups are capable is symbolized by the very graphic and violent image of monsters (like from our childhood nightmares) eating humans. These monsters are both giant and little at the same time. The mob is giant and ferocious while the monsters individually are weak and also petty (2 meanings for small). "Though to say we got much hope, If I am lost it's only for a little while." A beautiful idea with which to end a traumatic song: We have hope and that will get us through this, and even when I stray from my path and struggle (get lost), I will make it through and be alright (it was only for a little while). Also, they really belt out this point, repeating it several times and really leaving us uplifted! This is my favorite song by Band of Horses, and in general I think they are amazing, musically and lyrically. I saw them in concert last night for the first time and it was AWESOME! |
