Mark Knopfler – What It Is Lyrics 10 years ago
I agree 100%. Saw Mark Knopfler live a few months after visiting Edinburgh, and I realized the connection. I think the production and feel on the album version really captures the feel of that city as well.

Built to Spill – Carry the Zero Lyrics 10 years ago
I think you nailed it. People seem to be focused on the "blemishes" part and assuming this is somehow a song about "faking" or pretending to be someone one isn't. But that part of the song isn't really central to the theme, in my opinion. It's a minor digression compared to the fragile object metaphor. And becoming "a fraction of the sum" relates to "occupied with what other persons are occupied with and vice versa." She has stopped caring about putting the relationship back together (which they originally did "all alone") and become more concerned with the general concerns of society. He is disillusioned with her and sees her as just another piece of the big picture instead of the small, fragile one that was their relationship.

By the way, this song just kicks ass. It's definitely one of my go-to jams when I'm frustrated and just need to blast something loud.

Rosanne Cash – April 5th Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a strikingly beautiful song that combines the talents of four amazing artists: Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Costello & John Leventhal. I think the lyrics resonate at a very deep level without being specifically "about" a particular idea. There is a sense of the predicament of modern humans definitely: wanting peace like it's something we can buy, wanting time but being content to watch it fly. But these concepts are almost archetypal: dreams, imagination, free will, the heart as measure of a man, belief. Just listening to the song with an open mind & heart will give you all the meaning you need.

Bob Dylan – I'm Not There Lyrics 11 years ago
The original title was "I'm Not There (1956)." Dylan himself once said it was "a song that is not there." It was recorded during the Basement Tapes sessions, probably in 1967, so I have no idea what the (1956) part means. Possibly Dylan is recalling a relationship he had much earlier, in his teens, which could account for the jumbled lyrical quality of the song -- it's an uncertain memory of a confusing time. But the emotions are absolutely clear, as others have said above.

The Mountain Goats – Harlem Roulette Lyrics 11 years ago
Frankie Lymon was a teenage R&B singer in the late 1950's who came from a tough upbringing in New York City. He had some big hit songs, but then his voice changed and music styles changed, and he got hooked on drugs. The song tells the story of the night he died of an overdose.

The Mountain Goats – Until I Am Whole Lyrics 11 years ago
I wonder why he set it in Western Washington state? Snohomish is a actually very close to where I live. I'm thinking the main character may be Native American? The Snohomish tribe is also nearby here, and there are references to fishing that sound similar to the Native style. Anyway, great song.

The Mountain Goats – I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams cover) Lyrics 11 years ago
What would really be useful here would be a translation of what the female voice talking over the whole song is saying.
