Priscilla Ahn – Red Cape Lyrics 9 years ago
There's a lot of reference to me if seems to 9/11. The fact that she should've died in a plane crash and that the plane was flying way to low. I think that the song could be taking the perspective of a first responder who survived because I think the red cape symbolizes a desire to save people like a superhero or a first responder. I think the song tackles the survivors guilt concept very well. Also the reference to the hurricane could be the narrator having a new chance to save people.

Regina Spektor – Blue Lips Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song might be about the Protestant revolution and Martin Luther. It says he has all these ideas about religion and how people just follow leaders. Then it says he started out beneath the knowledge tree which I think is symbolic for his desire for people to go back to the bible and what scripture states. Then the bridge goes on to describe how the world would change and how everything always ends up the same (this is the blue). Those are my thoughts.

fun. – All Alright Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't know if anyone else hears it but I hear a tardis noise towards the end so I always relate it to the doctor. "Everyone I love is gonna leave me" it actually fits.

Missy Higgins – Dancing dirt into the snow Lyrics 10 years ago
I was think maybe this was about a person who uses anger to defend their sadness as others have said but I was thinking that perhaps there was a theme of losing a custody battle.
See it seems to me that perhaps the reason they lost the custody battle because of their violence and anger. Someone mentioned that dancing dirt into the snow could mean messing something up that's really pure. I don't know that seems like a childhood to me. Perhaps tainting that child's life. Then the other line while all around you people grow. Adults don't really grow so again it seems like a child. There's a lot of sadness that goes along with losing a custody battle that's what the rest of the song seems to be about.

Florence + the Machine – St Jude Lyrics 10 years ago
I've got a pretty bizarre theory about this song so bare with me. I think the song is written from the perspective of death and first realizing that when she touches people she kills them. St. Jude represents a miracle or good medicine or whatever that is saving the person. The song is written addressing the person close to death. This is my theory. It's pretty morbid but the lyrics tell the story for me. The song has a helpless tone (death having the loneliest existence) and well as an admiration of St. Jude.

Regina Spektor – Firewood Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the song is set when someone is in the hospital and they believe they're going to die. They start think about all their regrets. The burning of the piano represent the ultimate regret. So the singer is telling the person that your regrets they aren't that big we haven't burned the piano yet. "Nothing can stop you from dancing." The singer goes on to tell the person that they have to keep trying so when they burn the piano and it hurts them well at least they tried not to. The act of trying is what softens regret. If you did everything you could before you shouldn't regret it. I think the song is all about your memories and your regret. In the end maybe we burned the piano but we sure as hell didn't take the easy way out.

Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics 12 years ago
I meant stealing and on that same part I think I was a little unclear, the little brother wants to steal for himself saying it's his turn but the older brother (who just opened the window and heard the random boy cry) won't let the little brother try (saying it's too dangerous for him)
Oh and the "he"s and "you"s I used throughout are just a pronouns I use for the singer so that is separates from me complimenting on Regina's (she or her) music writing ability.

Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics 12 years ago
I think as far as the verse about the headphones is about being a teenager and it's uncool to think too much about everything hints the "using your headphones to drown out your mind".
I'd also like to mention here that it really clever the way she goes into the chorus type part here as if to say drowning out your mind is easy not remembering the song like in previous verses.
I think the next phrase about steal if I heard it by itself to me it seems like a boy who has to steal to live and he doesn't want to but outside he hears a small boy cry he doesn't actually know what the child is crying about but he relates it in his mind to an experience he had with his brother who he is trying to protect by not letting the brother steal for himself.
I'm thinking maybe he's telling the story of the brothers and it relates to the whole teenager not trying to think too hard but when he does think about that story in particular he realizes all the things teenagers don't realize other people have to go through.
I think as a whole song it's about being trapped in what society expects of you with each age and a soon as you transition between ages you get lost again and "it's like for getting the words to you favorite song". The song capture the moment when a person is transitioning in and out of being a teenager.
But it's neat and Regina does this a lot she leaves the song open ended so the story can continue and to me it like their transitioning to the next age and being lumped in with that group of society.
Idk this may be all wrong but that's how I interpreted it.

Missy Higgins – Everyone's Waiting Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this is just about wondering if the life you are living is where you really aught to be and if it is worth but feeling that you cant explore anything else because everyone expects it from you.

Missy Higgins – All In My Head Lyrics 12 years ago
My interpretation is that they lost someone very close to them and they are kind of in denial they feel like if they just keep looking they'll find the person eventually. In the end they do find the person but not where they had been looking they found them inside themselves. Their grief had blocked them from view even though they were always there "the night in my soul had been blacking you out". The all in my head represents their denial and their pain because the person who died wouldn't have wanted it.

Missy Higgins – Sugarcane Lyrics 13 years ago
Most of my interpretations of songs are linked to dance and I took the ballerina literally. I knew a family who had two daughters and the mom made the two daughters dance from when they were very young (not the kind every mom likes to do but serious competitive dance) the younger one didnt know weather or not she wanted to dance but she had too. I think the song is from the perspective of someone who knew this story and was telling someone about it and telling them to grow up strong so they can make their own decision on what they want to do with their life. The second verse is talking about what they have learned from the experience. They can dance without worrying what others might think "I wont see if you get bitter".

Missy Higgins – Cooling of the Embers Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't know if Missy meant it like this but this is how I interpreted it. I think its about a girl whos parents got a divorce when she was pretty young and her mother is not very kind to her throughout her childhood. Now her mom is dying and she is trying to apologize and make up for all the things she did. the daughter wonders if it is truthful because "she only half here". She remembers the times before the divorce "She's back again through summers past the smell of rain and freshly cut grass seems those ordinary days are the ones that last" (I just have to say that phrase are probably the most amazing lyrics I have ever heard and so true) She kind of mocks her in the next phrase saying she could never let go even though she did let go of him. she seems to regret it but "shes only half here". In the chorus the daughter is shocked that her mom is being so kind to her shes "not who she remembers". "Is this the cooling of the embers"; is it the time to drop all the resentment and except this new person whos only half here. The reference to the child means the sudden change in her mother is like the many sudden changes a child experiences everyday. The daughter does know what to think should she trust what she knows about her mother which is the terrible side or should she "cool the embers" and let go of that and trust this new person who apologizes.

Regina Spektor – One More Time with Feeling Lyrics 13 years ago
also a comment on the breathing is just a rhythm line for me its talking about all the stuff you have to give up to keep pursuing. They say breathing is necessary but its "just a rhythm" they also say sleep is necessary but I dont get any of that.

Regina Spektor – One More Time with Feeling Lyrics 13 years ago
I know everyone thinks this is about someone who is sick and in the hospital, I think this could be very true but personally I think the hospital references are just a metaphor for you to apply your own story. Personally I see it as giving up all your time and effort for one thing (for me dancing) and you feel like you put so much effort in and are getting nothing out and you wish that everyone would see that you are actually good and "you have come so far". You tell yourself that if you try just one more time "with feeling" and you keep working it will be worth it someday and that day is "why you fight" but it feels like the only reason you are fighting is to keep fighting.

Kendall Payne – Paper Skin Lyrics 13 years ago
Wow!!! no comments
Well, I'll add mine.
I think it is about being hurt and thinking there is something wrong with you because no one will treat you right. Then crying out for them to leave you alone. Because someone told you you were to sensitive.
If you ever feel this way remember this quote:
"Such sensitivity is a blessing, not many can say they ware your heart on your sleeve. Not many can say that they truly care."
