| Drive-By Truckers – Zip City Lyrics | 10 years ago |

"Zip City" is very closely related to Springsteen's "The River" for me. It's sort of a look at what the couple from "The River" might have been like before he "...got Mary pregnant/And man, that was all she wrote..." The kid in "Zip City" likes to play dumb, but he's smarter than most. He's aware that their raging hormones can get them into serious trouble (together and individually). It's a great song about how frustrating growing up can be. |

I remember seeing the track title on the album cover and thinking it would be some low-brow country/rock novelty song. And while the first verse has some humorous lines, it's actually a very sad song. The last line sums the situation up perfectly: "It's your own damn fault you been through hell/For one reason or another, seems like she kinda blames herself." We all know people who are too self-absorbed and/or obtuse to realize that they are the key to their own misery. And her mama feels bad for her, so she keeps enabling her. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Bob Lyrics | 10 years ago |

This is a great song, and I know it has spurred a lot of debate. I think the intent is that Bob could be gay, but that spending time speculating on it means selling a guy like Bob short. His sexual orientation is part of the theme, but it's not the song's message. I've always taken the "Bob ain't light in the loafers/He might kneel but he never bends over" lines as: Bob might be gay, but good 'ol boys that like to fish, drink beer and hang out with their dogs can be as gay your most flamboyant, feminine gay guy. A man can still be a "man's man," even if he's attracted to other men. Think about kneeling versus bending over in terms of homosexual (male) sex, and compare someone kneeling versus bending over. Top versus bottom, if you will. It's a very clever line. Where I'm from, if you aren't married with kids by your early 30's, many people start to talk. I'm in that boat, I identify with "Bob," and I'm poker straight as far as I know. I think it's a song about a man who knows who he is, what matters to him, and what doesn't. He could be gay or straight, and I don't think there's an answer to that question in the lyrics. And that's the point. |
