The Flaming Lips – Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles Lyrics 8 years ago
@[pthalomarie:6203] I think you're damn close. I have no idea what it is about but I really love this song! But what if it isn't about abortion but instead, it is a reference to miscarriage? Perhaps that would explain "Knowing God will be pleased" and "The chromosomes seem not to want the fetus." The body is rejecting the fetus instead of the mother.

Again, I do not feel as though I have much grasp on the meaning of this song. Just throwing an idea out there.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Crush Lyrics 10 years ago
I'd just like to set the record straight. This song is most definitely about love in reference to LSD. The original name of this particular tune was "Hippy Trippy" & was later renamed "Crush." It's kinda hard to see the drug reference if you have never experienced an acid trip but it is certainly there. He's trying to explain what it feels like when you're "tripping." The love he's talking about is more of a general love from within.

Soundgarden – Taree Lyrics 11 years ago
Apparently, Ben wrote the music before they broke up. I guess Chris wrote the lyrics this year. Taree is in reference to a sign in Kingston, WA. It was the letters that make up "Taree" in similar form as the famous Hollywood sign. Not sure what the lyrics mean but I just watched the commentary on youtube for this song.

Soundgarden – By Crooked Steps Lyrics 11 years ago
You may have nailed it. What you're saying definitely makes sense to me. Although, I must admit, I am also currently in the middle of a triangle such as this. I'd like to add that this could have been written from any of the 3 perspectives. After reading your interpretation, it almost seems like an endless cycle of how love is both found and lost at the same time. Love can be quite frivolous at times. Your take on this song is pretty spot on line for line. But my initial thoughts were that it was about drugs. It certainly wouldn't be the first song written by Soundgarden (or many other bands) that blurred the line between love and addiction. Pretty awesome. Soundgarden still kicks ass! And I've missed them sooo much!

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics 11 years ago
I was 19 when I first heard this song. I'm glad to know that so many young people like Soundgarden. I don't know if Cornell was honest about the meaning of this song but I know we (myself and others from my generation) listened to lot's of music that had little or no meaning. We tried to find meaning in all of it. Lot's of us were taking drugs and open to almost anything that involved partying or a philosophical conversation. I think the lyrics of this whole era were always vague because half the fun was finding your own meaning. An intelligent songwriter may not want to divulge the meaning of his or her work because if it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, it just might sell a few more copies. We liked our music very abstract in those days. They were just giving us what we wanted. So it IS open to any interpretation and I care not what Chris Cornell said in any interview!

One thing I think should be mentioned about this album, in general: It was a departure from they're hardcore grunge days. This was the beginning of the end of grunge. When the album was new it seemed as though they were selling out. And maybe they were but the music was so great, no one cared if they were selling out. All the way up to the point of breaking up, Soundgarden was the band everyone wanted to see live. I saw them a few times myself. Incredible band! All 4 band members are great musicians and each have a hand in song writing. Soundgarden was famous for recording full length albums that could easily be listened to from beginning to end. Every track a masterpiece. Something that is almost unheard of today. If you like Superunknown check out Bad Motor Finger. Arguably, their best work.

NOFX – Herojuana Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about the legalization of all drugs. Not just one, but all. If a guy can smoke crack and live a successful life, who am I to look down on him. Not all people who smoke crack are hanging out in crack houses slobbing nobs to get high. Some people actually have self control and don't live solely to get high. The drug war is about nothing but money. If the government was really concerned about our safety, there would be jail time for speeding. Reckless driving kills more people per year than drugs. If you don't believe me, just look around when you're driving. Most people in America are psychotic when behind the wheel. Legalizing drugs wouldn't be profitable to America. Imagine how different things would be. If drugs were legal, the crime rate would drop. Drug users wouldn't be taking up space in jail. I think most Americans have at least tried an illegal drug at some point, anyone locked up for drug charges now is by definition a political prisoner. Isn't America supposed to provide asylum for just such a person?

NOFX – Happy Break Up Song Lyrics 11 years ago
It's not NOFX. It is a band called Self Inflicted. There is a video of them doing this song live on youtube. The song was mislabeled as NOFX on some compilation or something long ago. A lot of people think it's NOFX. The vid I saw was jokingly labeled as a cover of a NOFX song but it is obvious that it is the same band if you listen to it. It had me fooled. I thought it was NOFX.

Liz Phair – Favorite Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is one of the sexiest songs I've ever heard. I'm an old school Liz fan and I think this is one of her best. It's about a guy she just keeps coming back to. No matter how much time has passed an other lovers they both go through, they can't just say no to each other. Sexually, he fits her like her favorite underwear. Sweet, yet nasty at the same time.

A Tribe Called Quest – Can I Kick It? Lyrics 11 years ago
This song came out in my early high school days. I still have it in my iPod playlist. One the greatest songs of all time. No matter what genre you're talking about. Totally made from samples too. Even the beat is sampled. Can I Kick It is one of many great examples of how sampling can be brilliant. It doesn't take away from the original songs that were sampled and don't really sound like them. The samples are looped and layered in a very psychedelic way. Songs like this are too expensive to produce today because of the higher price of recognizable samples.

The most clever use of the word "fuck" ever! The Blink 182 thing is more of a shot at their fans rather than at the band. Mainly, the young Mtv types that made Blink 182 a flavor of the month. The ones that loved Blink 182 but didn't even know NOFX existed.

NOFX – Fuck the Kids Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is funny. And that's it. I don't think this song is about Blink 182. It's a goof... And that's all. There is no hidden message. There are only 3 real words in the song- "fuck", "the", and "kids." And I don't care what was said by who and when. It doesn't matter. Fuck the kids.

NOFX – Freedom Lika Shopping Cart Lyrics 11 years ago
Freedom like a shopping cart would be like "uncut" pure freedom. If you have money, you can buy small amounts of freedom. But deciding to be a bum and saying "fuck society" is the truest freedom. No responsibility, no boss, and living completely in the moment. Some things about it could easily be envied.

NOFX – Franco Un-American Lyrics 11 years ago
Obviously, the meaning of this song has been interpreted many times over. Lots of people mentioned Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Reagan Youth, and Michael Moore when they talked about the change in Fat Mike. But no one really mentioned Public Enemy! Don't forget about Chuck D, Public Enemy's lead MC. When I first heard Franco Un-American I was so impressed that Fat Mike is a fan of Public Enemy. I've loved both bands for many years and I've always wondered if Chuck D was aware of the reference. Both bands are very similar when it comes to their views on politics and the music industry. The music is very different, though. If you have ever liked a hip hop song, please give Public Enemy a chance! They have like 13 albums of unbelievably great hip hop music. And I'm not talking about pop music for the masses. This is true hip hop with a real message made by people who put as much work into it as NOFX. I think Fat Mike probably mentioned them in this song because he had heard a PE song that was released around the same time. It is called Son Of A Bush. Not a bad place to start if you wanna get to know some PE. If you have never heard them, keep in mind that their first 7 albums were released by Sony-Def Jam and they are great! But in 1999 they were the first commercial band to ever release an album completely over the internet with no record label at all. Quite ballsy. They abandoned all commercialism and started REALLY making a statement since they no longer had to follow the guidelines of "standards and practices." Chuck D was already on these types of subjects back when Bush's dad was president.

One of my favorite lines written by Chuck D-

"Dictators
Human haters
Hand on the bomb , mass debaters
Finger on the button- infiltrators
Make love! Fuck war!
Peace will save us!"

Sorry. I know this isn't the Public Enemy forum but I thought the song meaning for Franco Un-American was done to death here. I didn't have anything to add to that. But the Public Enemy reference in this song was the only line that wasn't brought up repeatedly. So, I felt the need to bring it up.

Ralph Nader was a third party candidate. Most of the people who voted for him would have voted for Gore otherwise. So by taking votes away from Gore helped Bush win. Not a widely known fact but Ralph Nader is actually a NOFX fan. I don't know if he got into them before or after this song came out but I know he is a fan.

NOFX – Fleas Lyrics 11 years ago
If you've paid attention to other songs by NOFX, then you know that Fat Mike didn't follow the advice given in this song from his mom or dad. But things have turned out pretty good anyway. This is useless advice given by a lot of parents. We all make bad choices from time to time. Learning from these mistakes is called growing up. "Fleas" is about advice on how to be perfect. And perfection isn't possible if you're human.

I agree! I fell in love with Coaster just like I did with Pump Up The Valuum. Also Frisbee is good too. I believe you can still find Frisbee in torrent form. Only way I could find it. It was worth it.

I probably don't have to mention this but Frisbee is the vinyl version of Coaster. Aside from the obvious differences between Creeping Out Sara and Creeping Out Tegan, there are other more subtile differences throughout.

NOFX – Fermented and Flailing Lyrics 11 years ago
Our culture and economic climate has been bastardized so many times over, that we should have all seen this coming. But here we are, on our way down. Fat Mike did a great job of capturing the moment. It wasn't long after I heard this song that I lost my job. It's been a struggle ever since. But who gives a shit, right? We all have everything we need to survive on this planet anyway. So let's all enjoy a smoke, watch the whole thing fall and celebrate. Let's face it, most of us are just glorified slaves anyway. The structure of our little society is outdated and boring. I believe we can do better. I don't think 9/11 fits in this song because a failed America was going to happen sooner or later anyway.

Most white Americans are circumcised whether they are Jewish, Christian, Mormon, Scientologist, Satanic, Atheist, or even Westboro Baptist.
Also Jewish people ARE white people.
