| The National – Apartment Story Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
I see it as their plea for something out of the ordinary. They go through the motions of daily life the way it's scripted and the way they were told life should be, but ultimately all they want is something different and distinctly "their own". They're anxious and inpatient as their life grows ever-shorter in the script. Every unique belief of theirs was lost to the expectation of proper appearance and adult attitudes. Boring, routine urban life blurs the days together until they're a "rosy-minded fuzz". |

| Silversun Pickups – Common Reactor Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
It's about the fear of dying. "Common reactor" meaning it happens to everyone eventually. And he "couldn't put it down" because if you start thinking about it it can be all you think about. The thing about the doe-eyed girl is saying how she might have died, and she's nameless because, well, she doesn't exist in the living world anymore. "I'll be ashen on the images that have all been caught inside" probably means that he will remember the people who were victims of Death. Basically the chorus, and I think the second verse, too, are about how you can't fight the inevitable, no matter how loud and righteous you are. |

| This definitely has something to do with the Dessner brothers. If you watch the music video, you can see them discussing something in the background every now and then, and a lot of the little scenes involve them. | |
| The National – Sea of Love Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| (In reply to ikarys) I know that now. But even having written this last comment only two weeks ago, I'm afraid I was a bit ignorant, because I've only recently started listening to the National. For instance, I know now that I misspelled Carin's name. | |
| The National – Karen Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Oh, I apologize, I just read the interview... Wow, I never knew that. I guess he met Carin later then...? Coincidentally, with nearly the same name...? | |
| The National – Karen Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Uhh, sorry to correct you, but his *wife is named Carin.. | |
| The National – Friend of Mine Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Well, can't beat beat Resonant, they've got a freaking interview! (Though it would be hard to know for sure if that was the whole truth, without proof, but I'll buy it) | |
| The National – Val Jester Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
Hm. I always thought he was saying "all the most evil people in New York knew *something*" but now that I listen to it I can clearly hear the "important people" and "nineteen". (wonder how I got that so wrong...) Anywho, it might be about a girl who wanted her independence from her family and wanted to go off on her own, but before the parents could prepare her for the outside world she was killed somehow. Anyway, that's how I saw it before the lyric shift. I'm not sure how this would relate to Matt Berninger though. |
|
| The National – Sea of Love Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I don't think this has anything to do with a failing relationship or anything like that... because the singer, Matt, is married to someone named Karen, not Jo. So I'm not sure... | |
| The National – Mr. November Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think the idea of presidency or failure or any of that is legit, but it is definitely not about Obama running for office. It's not possible. | |
| The National – Sorrow Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
Actually... I just now watched an interview with Aaron and Bryce on Youtube, and they mentioned that the words are actually "sorrow's a girl inside my cake". The song was supposed to be a fun sort of celebration of sorrow (which I saw in another interview that I can't remember)... But the cake part was found in the video: "Backstage with The National at the Treasure Island Music Festival". |
|
| The National – Sorrow Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I hear the chorus as: Don't leave my hyper heart alone on the water cover me with rag and bones, sympathy 'cause I don't wanna get over you Anyways, I think this song is about how bad things seem to follow one around, appearing in every aspect of one's life until it becomes a part of him or her and they get used to the idea of strife, loneliness, failure, misfortune. Pessimism, basically. And this sorrow has been with them so long that they've almost become comfortable with it, and would feel alien with it gone. |

| The National – Cherry Tree Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
Dude, first of all **you're Also, I sort of interpreted this as someone who is over-opinionated and likes to point out the flaws in everyone, whether or not they know it's wrong. "Take us down and all apart Cherry Tree Lay us out on the table" --Dissect them and study them for flaws "You're sharp alright" --You think you know it all "But no one is asking so leave it alone Leave it alone Can we" --Nobody wants to hear your opinions "Loose lips sink ships" --Your comments could set someone off or beat them down; you could ruin people "Don't Look at me I'm only breathing Don't look at me I'm indiscreet" --Don't analyze me! I'll be whatever you want! "Can we show A little discipline" --Be courteous, don't hurt people like this I think at the end it builds up all powerful like that to show that those comments have finally pushed someone over the edge, whether into violence or self-hatred, or what have you. I think this could apply to not just opinionated or nosy people, but also to the media, projecting the "perfect life" and critizing the others, making sure everyone knows it. I also like the take dryancu had on it, though the Washington thing would be more of an analogy than the actual literal meaning. Interpretations aside, I absolutely love this song. It starts off as haunting, sort of hopeless or bitter, eerie, and quickly builds up into something really powerful and demanding, like he's finally saying "enough is enough, look what you've done" |

| Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch Lyrics | 13 years ago |

I don't know what version of the song this is, but in the one I'm listening to, he never once says "movements are made slow motion in frame i'm waiting and fading and floating away the curtains are torn and the setting decayed i'm waiting and fading and floating..." He only says "waiting and fading and floating away" four times. So what the heck??? |

None of the songs from Sci-Fi Crimes are personal: "Pete Loeffler normally wrote lyrics about personal subjects, however on Sci-Fi Crimes, he wrote of stories including apparitions, conspiracy theories, and erratic sleeping conditions." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevelle) I wouldn't know what this particular song is about, though. |

| Chevelle – Mia Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Great song! I like some of Chevelle's older stuff because it just sounds more natural to me. Though, I do love ALL of their music! As far as the meaning, I've read in some places (though I could'nt provide a source) that it was kind of "mocking" towards God, but I see more of a "what's on the inside counts", like 'joey_luvs' said below. I may be wrong, but that's just how I interpret it--- and I don't find the theme cheesy at all, because it's just so true! It's all about each individual's interpretation of the song... Maybe we'll never know what it actually means. W00T! |

| Chevelle – An Evening with El Diablo Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
First of all, the lyrics are wrong: *Try to run when YOU sleep* *Fly around my HELL* *Nothing seems to FAZE you* *I was high ABOVE you* (different the second time) *Some say we can never know - just how far down* (No "from" there) The last time he screams "so scared", he screams "to lie" after it instead of "to run". And he says "Wish I had your faults" twice more at the end. As far as the lyrical interpretation, it seems to obviously be about the devil, but that's as far as I got before it made no sense. The meaning doesn't matter as much to me because the music is awesome! |

| Chevelle – Grab Thy Hand Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I'm sorry, but I don't believe that Chevelle would write about lust or sex or stupid stuff like that. They're much DEEPER than that. | |
| Chevelle – Get Some Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
If nobody had said so, I wouldn't have come up with this, but I too believe in the American Idol concept, and TOTAllY AGREE WITH IT. While great bands like Chevelle are working hard and harder to write their music and get to where they are, random people can come and audition, using songs they didn't even write themselves and basically standing on the shoulders of greater artists (don't mind my Jurrassic Park reference) to be voted down mostly because of looks and musical style. These people may be good singers, no doubt, but there's more to being a musical artist than singing well, like the determination and creativity that comes from accepting real criticism and WRITING THEIR OWN MUSIC. It makes no sense that some Jo Schmo can sing somebody's song and, within weeks, become a millionair and artist, while the process to fame offers them no experience with the REAL world of music. Sorry for my venting. Though it may also be about drinking ;). |

| Chevelle – Face to the Floor Lyrics | 13 years ago |

At the very beginning, I'd like to point out that he says "I was just thinking". Oh, and thrwmyhrtawy, keep your swearing to yourself--it doesn't make you cool. |

| Chevelle – Panic Prone Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
To me, this song kinda speaks of someone who has problems, may it be an addiction or what have you, but they're alienating the people who are dependent upon or who care about them. This person apologizes and makes promises that are broken immediately afterward because of their problem, and they feel guilty about their weaknesses. Basically the other person is telling them to face their issues with dignity and to try to change. At least, that's how I see it. It may be wrong. My eyes just melt when I listen to this song, it's so beautiful! I LOVE Chevelle, the geniuses! |
|
| Chevelle – Breach Birth Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
To me, this song is about people, or society, and how we're all "stuck in molds", and nobody's taking any risks to be different. That's just me, though. It could also apply to the world of music, I suppose. |

| Chevelle – Emotional Drought Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I looooove Chevelle!! I agree that this song is about him wanting to write his own music but having the producers changing everything, but of course that's just how I see it. I hate how everybody on here's saying how theirs are the only true explanations. I believe that while any songwriter, Chevelle included, has his/her own ideas when they write music, it's meant to be interpreted differently by anyone who hears it. What Songmeanings is for is to offer suggestions to people, any of which they can cling to and say "wow, that makes a lot of sense!". |
