I think when people rationalize about this subject it mostly sounds to me like they are always putting all the blame onto the victim of aggression/abuse/etc. Most of the rationalizations sounds like huge copouts to me. They are part of the problem. Which further reinforces that MOST humans are a huge waste of time and they will even go out of their way to make your life worse than it already is. I would LOVE to believe that Dave Grohl is really that rebellious and worried about the direction the world is going into, but there's something about the guy that always rubbed me the wrong way. Such a shame that this brilliant musician would always be portrayed like "a druggie that will soon find his way to the coffin" since 1996 or so and even more during the 1998 jail thing. And was scapegoated since then.
Not sure he payed that much attention to what the media said of him, or even cared at all.
Being that this is the second or third song he's talking about this, it seems to be more of an inner struggle. Being jailed for not exactly commiting any "crime", just because bullshit laws.
All the while, the guy who raped him at 12 years old had all the freedom in the world with his very real crime never being punished. |

Fellow nomads, rejoice. I kind like the simplicity of the lyrics, they're to the point, no room for wrong interpretations, without really being dull, and they also tell a story.
In terms of the music, I like that it starts with this kind of "major chord" fanfare of sorts, like you would see in classical music or soundtracks. I also like the bridge section which prevents the song from getting stale. And the double chorus at the end.
That change of voice specially in the very last chorus from the edge of falseto into the normal voice (I think it's called "chest voice"?) while sustaining the same breath is pure gold.
There's a touch of Freddie Mercury in his voice here.
Anyway, I listened to this song more times than I'm willing to admit and I never get tired of it.
And now for opinions:
When Devin attempts to be "emotional" or "deep" I think it's when the most stupid cringeworthy lyrics come out. He doesn't really have that depth of insightfulness to be able to get away with that stuff. I think he's much better when he focus on the "simple" stuff like this one.

Ok here it goes the massive ammount of text that no one ever asked for. Every inch of my body and soul urges me to do it so I'm gonna do it. I think every man remembers the first breakup. It's such a decisive moment in development, if you choose to use it in that manner. Some men just shutdown any feeling in an attempt to stop the pain, without realizing they will not evolve by doing that. In my personal experience (and I assume many others) the relationship wasn't that good to begin with, in fact it was miserable, but we clinge so hard even to that that it becomes hard to let it go.
