Frank Black – Ten Percenter Lyrics 8 years ago
I disagree with bshirley. I think Francis is referring to the 10% brain myth. At least the surrounding lyrics seem to indicate that.

I'm just another ten percenter
My mind is like an ocean
My mind is like an ocean
I'm hanging in the harbor

He saying he's just another person that only uses 10 percent of his brain. While that might be a myth, there's certainly people that don't use their full intelligence.

While his mind has unlimited capabilities/space (like an ocean) he's only using a portion of it (hanging in the harbor).

I think Frank is writing from the viewpoint of a character (perhaps autobiographical) that idolizes Iggy Pop.

I'm just trying to a guy
Who's hailing from Ann Arbor

So, the character is trying to be a genius like Iggy Pop, but for the time being, he's slaving away as a soda jerk -- like Iggy Pop (according to Frank at least).

Mark Mulcahy – Alamo in Alabama Lyrics 9 years ago
A father considering leaving (or committing suicide.) The narrator (the father) sounds depressed and in some bad situation. Can't get his life under control; "could not find the handle."

However, it appears his young son's innocence made him reconsider. At least at that time. The final couple of lines make it unclear. "I'm gonna leave you, I don't want to lead you on." Maybe he's just saying he will die eventually, but not tonight. Maybe he thinks he'll have to "leave" eventually anyways, but he'll stay for now.

Adam Green – Heart Attack Lyrics 10 years ago
Very esoteric, but some themes are persistent.

1.) Main character seems to be a prostitute (or a promiscuous man/woman) who pulled a Monica Lewinsky and had a sexual relationship with the president.

2.) Get the sense the person is (as expected) using this information to extort money. Or is perhaps involved in a legal battle, likely related to the extramarital affair.

"And I was mentioning the president,
Just to give them a heart attack,"

"You got a soft and friendly face,
You got enough to win this case,
It's time to get a heart attack,"

3.) The stress of the extortion (or whatever) seems to be building and getting to the individual. But it could also be stress to the individual that is being extorted. Perhaps the stress of hiding the affair is taking its toll on the president/his staff

"You got a meatball you can't hide,
You got to wait for to subside,
If only humanity survives,
You're gonna get a heart attack,"

4.) Main character is waiting to get money then planning to flee and live comfortably in a tropical/warmer climate, where they will relax and enjoy life.

"I got a feeling in my biker shorts,
Things are gonna get much slower,
You wanna get out of the ring now,"

"I'm going to die in Jamaica no no no,
I'm going to die in Miami no no no,
I'm going to die in Puerto Rico no no no,
I'm going to die in Hawaii no no no,"

Harvey Danger – Cool James Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's about someone who isn't easily able to adapt to changes. They desperately search for how to fit in and act normally.

When he says nature change, he might mean human nature?

But anyways the guy is pissed off because everytime he figures it all out, things change. I agree with thenextpope about the LL Cool J reference. LL Cool J means Ladies Love Cool James. I think LL Cool J serves as a reference to someone that gets it. So the narrator hates him because he gets society and the narrator struggles to do so.

Lifter Puller – Space Humping $19.99 Lyrics 10 years ago
"Think about what I've got and compare it to what you've got,
What do you think my girl wants, my girl wants?"

Two ways to read that:

1.) He's bragging about what he has, likely access to drugs or money, and he's reaffirming his relationship with this crazy chick.

2.) It's a statement of insecurity/pleading. He recognizes he isn't that good of a boyfriend, but she's with him for one reason right now. Likely drugs. With this reading, I get kind of a "Jolene" like plead. "You guys can take her from me, but please don't.

Based on the rest of the song, there's evidence to support both readings. I think the second reading might be more correct, but hard to tell. He shows submissiveness and defensiveness as he defends her for not working and watching daytime TV.

But the very next line supports the first reading:
"They think I'm smart,
They think it's art but then i start with a crash
I'm just a brash trash talker"

Electric Six – Gimme the Eyes Lyrics 10 years ago
"Which eyes tell the lie
Now when you see that pyramid
Lookin' up at that big ol' eye in the sky
You gonna think of money"

Reference to the eye of Horus which is the eye on the pyramid on U.S. money. It's also associated with the Freemasons (which are accused of having secret influence in the government).

I think the song is about that conspiracy theory. It's definitely about two individuals with undue power over society. They impose their will over the nation, which doesn't turn out well for the rest of society.

Electric Six – I Never Fucked Her Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is either about incest or about being friendzoned.

I think incest is more likely because of this section:

"I would revolt and change the rules
So we could run around like fools
I would revolt and change the rules
So we could run around like fools
And as nature's debased, God's erased
It's a taste that is acquired"

He loves her and she might feel the same way about him, but rules of society forbid their relationship. Sounds like incest, but could be something else (brother-in-law and sister-in-law or the wife of a friend).

Electric Six – Iron Dragon Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's about two artists of some sort (musician, actor, etc) trying to make it big. I think the narrators friend is semi-successful whereas the narrator is good at a dead art (rusty wagon compared to a dead horse).

Don't have a clue what Iron Dragon means. The song functions through kind of medieval imagery, so maybe it's intended to mean the friend becomes powerful in their artistic arena. But that's an absolute guess.

Electric Six – The New Shampoo Lyrics 10 years ago
I get the feeling this is about someone realizing they are guy, because they get aroused watching shampoo commercials with beefy guys washing their hair. The same thing happens at the gym.

Not sure if the garbled lyrics after the second chorus is "We've, we've come a long way" or "Wet, wet, covered all wet." Both make sense.

The last stanza brings up vanity. I think he becomes obsessed with being like the guys in the shampoo commercials too and wants his hair to be perfect.

Electric Six – Adam Levine Lyrics 10 years ago
This one's pretty self explanatory. It's a social commentary on the popularity and profitability of mindless pop music. Adam Levine is the target, but I'm sure it could apply to other artists.

Valentine is focusing on how we sustain their lifestyles, but buying their products.

This reminds me a lot of "Fabulous People" off of I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me from Being the Master. Similar topics. (The same album that the song "Lenny Kravitz" is on).

Electric Six – Show Me What Your Lights Mean Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about a guy that meets a girl he finds gorgeous, but can't really figure her out. He knows she's the one, but doesn't know how to act around her or what she's thinking. He's also not sure why someone like her is interested in him.

That's emphasized here:

"Asking everyone I know what's wrong with this picture
How come it taste so good when it's such a rotten mixture
It's not a visa
But I'm willing to get flexible"

He's knows there's something wrong with the fact that she's with him. But can't figure it out and she's so perfect he can't say no.

Not sure what the visa line is suppose to mean (if that's correct). Maybe she doesn't have a visa and is using him to get citizenship, but that isn't really represented anywhere else in the song.

Another important aspect is that the girl is probably no good for the narrator.

"And when I heard the sound of the siren start to scream
I was blinded by her death ray beam
From the heavy metal sex regime"

He's getting signs that he should not mess around with her, because it will likely end bad. But he's blinded by her "death ray beam" light, which is based in her sexuality. She's too hot for him to avoid her.

A nom de plume is a pen name or literary double (according to wikipedia).

I think the song is about a girl with a past that she's is trying to hide. Some dark secret. And the narrator found out about that secret and is possibly using it to blackmail the girl into a relationship (or something).

Blackmail is something that shows up occasionally in E6 songs.

Electric Six – Cranial Games Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about an agent-client situation. The narrator is the agent who manipulates and scams the unaware client.

The first verse is the agent admitting his games, but saying he's harming the client. He's okay with what he does, and says at least he understands himself.

The first bridge takes up through the client gaining fame and becoming popular/gaining attention.

The pep talks part, is something that seems common to celebrities, who have agents and people leeching on to them, who continually boost their ego. "You're amazing, you're talented, you're beautiful, etc." It boosts the client into an overconfident, but clueless individual. And the agent uses that cluelessness to scam the client.

The second bridge is the downfall/realizing the scam and the followed breakdown. The agent causes the downfall and brings her back up, but is controlling her and being manipulative.

Electric Six – Unnatural Beauty Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the song is about plastic surgery. The female subject wants to get it, the narrator disagrees. She says he'll feel better once it happens (and his "head is buried in her sweater" or enhanced chest).

This experience makes the narrator feel like an outcast and that vanity like the female subject displays is common practice. I think it effects him deeply and he feels out of place. I think that's what the bridge lines are showing (monkey hangers are (presumably) worst off than him, but they have a place in society.

The monkey town lines are referencing Hartlepool (see other comment) and I think the monkey drown line is referencing the monkey from the legend. Perhaps the narrator is identifying with the monkey's tale. The monkey went through arduous journey (shipwreck), but survived and ended up being hung.

The narrator might be comparing the monkey's luck to his own.

submissions
Electric Six – Unnatural Beauty Lyrics 10 years ago
Reference:

Monkey hanger: slang term for a resident of Hartlepool, England (a seaside town). The term comes from a legend about a monkey that washed up on the shore of Hartlepool of a French warship, that was hung for treason.

Electric Six – Late Night Obama Food Lyrics 10 years ago
It's clearly a social commentary on the diet of the poor in America. The narrator has money to buy food, but his choices are limited. Pizza, fast food, processed foods. Perhaps as a result of cost compared to fresh items or perhaps as a result of bad choices/self control.

Valentine is pointing out the contradiction between the fact that they are eating, even though they are poor, but they are still killing themselves with bad food. It reminds me of college with my roommate who was a biology major. When I'd eat a lot of Ramen noodles he'd say something to the effect of "starving on a full stomach" in reference to the lack of nutrition one receives.

I'm not sure what Valentine is trying to convey with the Obama reference. Maybe it's just a technique to express that it's people on welfare, not just fat people eating badly. It might be Obama's own contradiction between his wife's fight for health eating and perhaps a lack of support for the poor? But I'm not sure.

Mark Mulcahy – Poison Candy Heart Lyrics 10 years ago
It reminds me of another song on the album (Everybody Hustles Leo). It's about a guy be in love with a girl who's got problems

The subject of the song is the relationship between man and a woman that's a little wild. She has cocaine and she's sexually free. But Leo seems to have a crush on her, but he's having trouble trusting her. Again, she's a little wild and he's been "hustled" or used/wronged before. I get the feeling he wants to love her, but is afraid. So he gives her space and breaks it off.

She likes him and it makes him feel a little nervous after he breaks it off. But the narrator assures that he did the right thing. If it's true love, she'll come back, and "she always comes back."

AJJ – 'Nother Beer Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a pretty straight forward song. Girl meets guy. Guy isn't a very good person. Gets the girl pregnant, goes to jail and gets out.

The narrator realizes this is a bad thing and probably the girl realizes the guy returning is good. She'd probably be better off without him, but he's the father and she might love him. Unfortunate for her and her baby.

I get the feeling the narrator can't do anything or doesn't know what to do. It's one of those situations where you realize something isn't right, but there's no way to help until she helps herself.

Lou Reed – Kill Your Sons Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about Reed's experiences as a teen, like (weirdly befittingly) BrainDamage said.

When Lou Reed was a teenager, his parents had him undergo electric shock treatment and drug therapy to try and "cure" his homosexual tendencies. This song is about the flawed system he endured. And how the mental facilities of that time were just making life worst.

The second verse is about how even "traditional" marriage can be flawed and it's not good for people to hide their true nature. The third verse is about how he was able to endure the mental facilities.

Lou Reed – Ride Sally Ride Lyrics 11 years ago
Clearly about sex, at least in my opinion, but not sure what he is saying about Sally and sex.

"Oooh isn't it nice, when your heart is made out of ice
Ride, Sally, ride
It's not your time or way of confusion
Ride, Sally, ride
'Cause if you don't, you'll get a contusion
Oooh isn't it nice, when your heart is made out of ice"

It sounds like Sally may be a virgin and she's having sex for the first time, but she might not be ready. Or perhaps after her first experience she figured out she doesn't like guys and she likes girls better. Not sure, but there seems to be a thread of both inexperience and indecision throughout the song.

I'm not sure if the contusion means Sally is being threatened or he's talking metaphorically. Like the confusion is going to hurt her head.

Moistboyz – Uncle Sam and Me Lyrics 11 years ago
Seems to be your basic anti-America song, perhaps with an extremist libertarian mindset to it. Everything seems pretty self-explanatory throughout the song. However one reference (that I couldn't figure out) seems to stick out.

"We don't need your tribulation.
We don't need your royal scam.
This is all just masturbation.
Martin, John and Uncle Sam."

I wasn't sure what exactly this was talking about or what was meant by "Martin, John and Uncle Sam." But after a google search I found that that last line is a reference to a folk song from the late 60's by Dion called "Abraham, Martin and John."

The song is a audio memorial to some American heroes (Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and John Kennedy). So it's fitting that this pro-America song is belittled by the Moistboyz. Referring to these heroes as the equivalent of a royal family (like the British that once controlled the US).

Harvey Danger – Authenticity Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it's a song about a hipster (more or less). The narrator has a high opinion of himself and a very low opinion of others. He's real, he's great, he's special. And he's much better than the others he refers to.

He's elitist, but the irony is the people he is talking about have the same type of qualities as him (they think they are special too). And this disgusts him.

They Might Be Giants – It's Not My Birthday Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it's about suicide. The man can't control anything in his life (Well the rain falls down without my help I'm afraid/And my lawn gets wet though I've withheld my consent).

His life is a wreck (Train keeps rolling off the track) and he's getting ready to kill himself.

"I'll be hanging from the hope
That I'll never see that recipe again"

Hanging from the hope is pretty self explanatory and he'll never see "that recipe" means he'll never have to deal with his problems.

"Though I'll wish you were there, I was less than we could bear"

He couldn't stand himself (perhaps depressed) and maybe misses the person he is singing about.

"So, I'm rattling the bars around this drink tank
Discreetly I should pour through the keyhole or evaporate completely
But there'd be no percentage, and there'd be no proof
And the sound upon the roof is only water"

He starts drinking to deal with his problems. He wishes he could just disappear, but he reconsiders, while he problems keep coming at him (rain on the roof).

Finally, it's not his birthday... it's the opposite.

Destroyer – Song for America Lyrics 11 years ago
Not sure of the exact meaning. My guess: Jessica came to America, got addicted to drugs, and now lives a seedy life on the "dark side of town." This is a friend or lover singing sadly about it and subtly blaming America for her downfall. The second half of the song is his visualization of America.

David Bowie – The Next Day Lyrics 11 years ago
According to Visconti it's about a European ruler in the Middle Ages:

"Bowie wails and at times approaches hysteria as his dark lyrics, which according to producer Tony Visconti reference a late medieval period European tyrant, allude to the hypocrisy of the church (“They can work with Satan while they dress like the saints/ They know that god exists for the devil told them so”) and recall the bleak Orwellian post-apocalyptic imagery used on Diamond Dogs (“He drags them to the river‘s bank in the cart/ Their soggy paper bodies wash ashore in the dark…”)"

I would also say it's metaphor for his career as well.

David Bowie – How Does The Grass Grow? Lyrics 11 years ago
Still trying to figure out this cryptic song. Definitely about someone who was likely a soldier and forced to do some bloody, horrible things during his career. And it seems that experienced has warped him. Maybe some horrible sort of PTSD.

He can't get his life together and feels isolated from the rest of society and lonely. He hates it, but can't escape the lessons he learned in the military (the chorus is a reiteration of these "lessons").

The chorus also seems to be related to this scene from Full Metal Jacket: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsUtIWzRkQI (What makes the grass grow? Blood, blood, blood. What do we do for a living, ladies? Kill, kill, kill.

The lyrics of Hot Cha were written (i believe) in response to my disappearance from contact with my parents for much of 1982. Despite his claims otherwise, i am clear that this song on the Flood album is about me."

David Cronenberg's Wife – Harry the Morgue Lyrics 11 years ago
One of the few DCW protagonists that you can empathize with. In the band's fashion, Harry is an outlier, who works as a mortician. He seems to be awkward and lonely. The song details his life and his sad end.

He never experienced love in his life, and uses his work, masturbation, fantasy and hobbies (magazines/Stanley knives) to replace that hole. Until he sees the care his mentor puts towards his clients. This isn't love, but poor Harry confuses this attention to detail and care for a type of love. The lonely man then decides that is all he wants in life is to be loved/recognized by his mentor.

So he kills himself with the expectation that Van Bor will comb his pubic hair like he did the other patient. Sadly, though Van Bor does put great effort into Harry's embalming, he doesn't comb Harry's pubic hair. "So Harry died, with his one wish left unfulfilled." Perhaps a fitting end for a man that was deprived of much in his life.

And to emphasize how unimportant Harry's life was, the narrator gets off track at the end of the story and starts talking about Harry's uncle, and Pete and Sue.

The juxtaposition between the two tales (Harry and Pete/Sue) is startling as well. Harry lives a sad, unfulfilled life, where Pete lived a life that Harry may have wished for. They got married, had kids and Pete died wealthy at an old age. Almost the exact opposite of Harry's life. Also it's worth noting the possible word play in the line: "Died soon after Sue died" (Sue died and suicide sound and look quite similar).

T. Rex – Baby Boomerang Lyrics 11 years ago
At its base, the song seems to be about unrequited love. But the girl that the narrator lusts after isn't your normal woman. At the very least, she is very promiscuous and she most likely is a prostitute. Which compounds the fact that the narrator has been unsuccessful in his pursuit of this girl. Not sure what that tells you about the narrator, but it reminds me of the "couldn't get laid in a whorehouse" saying.

No matter what, Bolan seems to lay down everything pretty clearly. The narrator is in love with the girl and he clearly wants her. Maybe solely as a sexual partner, but I think the line "I'm trying to write my novel, but all you do is play" means he has planned out his dream relationship with her. But sadly she is living her own life (with other guys).

"I'm searching through this garbage, looking for a friend" might imply the narrator has dated and tried to find another woman, but nobody compares to Boomerang.

Bolan also details a bit of her life. She an "angel of the night" (which I assume means hooker). I think the "New York witch" line means she's tried to go straight, but she's not suited for a normal life. She doesn't seem to have many options. Even her family seems to take advantage of her. The end of the second verse seems to be Boomerang's uncle offering her a way out of this life. But as it turns out, he's only interested in her body, like everyone else (beside possibly the narrator).

At the end of the song, "It seems to me to dream is something too wild" might be the narrator relenting and realizing things aren't going to work out the way he would like. Boomerang is heading south (catching rides the only way she knows how). She might be leaving New York in a last ditch effort to finally go straight.

I think the name Baby Boomerang kind of creates a dual and sad reading of the female character as well. Like she is trapped in her lifestyle. It's the only thing that makes sense to her. She tries to go straight, but it never works out and she keeps coming back to her old life (which is where the boomerang reference comes from).

That might also be why she never "spikes" the narrator. This is inferring a lot, but Boomerang might have similar feeling for the narrator, so she doesn't have sex with him. The narrator is upset and confused by this and he exasperates his confusion during the chorus. Boomerang might be waiting for her life to get straighten out before she attempts a relationship. But that's just a wild guess.

In the end, I think the song is something many guys can relate with. A tale of unrequited love, where it seems everyone is finding love when you are being left behind.
