I think many here would find this article about Diane Lozito (her Grandmothers name was Rose Lozito) pretty interesting... Diane was “Wild Billy’s” girlfriend. It was 1971, the summer of Lozito’s high school graduation, and he took her to a little club in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Great band. Billy was very outgoing, knew the guitar player, a guy named Bruce. Apparently Lozito made an impression. Springsteen, 21, asked a friend “Who is that girl?” “Aw that’s crazy Diane.” She kept running into Springsteen throughout the summer. “Billy and his friends were major party boys,” Lozito recalls. “But Bruce didn’t drink or get high. One night at the beach, when Billy and the others were drinking, Bruce and I tucked around a rock and started kissing. [If this sounds familiar, throw on Springsteen’s “Spirit in the Night.”] Then I said, ‘It’s time to go” – because I was so scared of getting busted by Billy. That was a nice night. Light coming off the ocean, nothing like it.” Springsteen carried a notebook and was always jotting things down. “The next day he showed me the line ‘She kissed me just right/Like only a lonely angel can.’” Soon Billy was out of the picture, Lozito and Springsteen talked about moving in together, and she took him to meet her mother. “Bruce charmed her to death,” Lozito says. “When we left the house, he said, ‘Oh, she loved me. She’s gonna say yes!’” The next day he dropped by. “Did she say we could move in?” Springsteen asked. “Well, no,” Lozito replied. “Why?” “Because my father was a musician, and you’re a musician.” Her parents’ divorce hadn’t gone well. Lozito watched as Springsteen wrote in his book: “I know your mama, she don’t like me ‘Cause I play in a rock and roll band’ "OK, your dad,” Springsteen said, “he’s a musician. He’s gotta love me. Ask him.” But Lozito’s father told her, “All musicians are bums.” A year later, Springsteen and Lozito moved in together anyway, and he wrote the classics that turned up on his first three albums – “Spirit in the Night,” “Backstreets,” “Wild Billy’s Circus Story,” “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” – along with performance legends that weren’t released for years. “I’d ask, ‘Why isn’t my name in those songs?” Lozito says. “He’d tell me, 'It’s boring having a whole album about the same girl. Also I think this lyric is wrong: I seen some lights in my rearview mirror, I guess I panicked and I gave her a gun. I think the correct lyric is "I panicked and I gave her the gun". meaning flooring the accelerator on the car, not an actual gun. That would tie into the road getting slick, and wrapping the car around a telephone pole. Look at the line from Something in the Night for reference. Out driving by himself at the start of the song, "and I take her to the floor" meaning flooring the accelerator for reference. |

I think this Nebraska era song is the flip side to Highway Patrolman, as told by the brothers perspective. Now of course, not everything matches up, but I think Bruce was trying to write these songs from two different sides. Lets look at the lyrics. Losing Kind (LK) - My name is Frank Davis, Highway Patrolman (HP) - I got a brother named Franky and Franky ain't no good LK - It was around 3 A.M. we went out to this empty little roadside bar It was there the cash register was open, it was there I hit that guy too hard HP - There was trouble in a roadhouse out on the Michigan line There was a kid lyin' on the floor lookin' bad bleedin' hard from his head there was a girl cryin' at a table and it was Frank, they said. LK - Well we drove around in my Buick, gettin' drunk and havin' fun HP - Seen a Buick with Ohio plates behind the wheel was Frank LK - I seen some lights in my rearview mirror, I guess I panicked and I gave her a gun HP - Well I chased him through them county roads till a sign said Canadian border five miles from here Now of course the ending and some of the particulars are different, but the similarities make me think this was a writing twin to Highway Patrolman. |

These songs on I’m alive are all interwoven. This is an album of loss and betrayal. Just as Two of Me and two of you, deals with betrayal, and being cheated on, so does this song. There were two sets of footprints, two silhouettes, now here beside the sea are the footprints of three. Me, you, and the new guy. Two of me (me and the fool I’ve been) and the two of you (girlfriend and new beau) These songs were written after Daryll Hannah left Jackson for JFK jr. I think in many of the songs he is speaking right to her as though she were in the room. A great album. |

I see the interpretation of the desperate heart, and his wife's suicide, but I interpret the song differently. Jackson seems to write of the struggle with wanting something more when one is in a relationship. This theme is reflected in songs such as Farther On, Hold Out, Love Needs a Heart, etc. In this song the singer wants to cut out that part of him that is looking for something more. He meets the girl, and he courts her to win her love. He becomes the man he thinks he needs to be to win her, a fantasy. Once he has her, there's a crazy longing for something more. He wants to cut out that part of him that is never content, and constantly searching for something better. He says he wishes he could return to the beginning, when they were lovers and nothing more. He admits that he has schemed and lied to her, but he is unsatisfied, and wishes that he could somehow be. He is pleading by the end, because he knows this "desperate heart" will tear his whole life apart. In the end he tells her he does love her, and always will, but there is something inside of him that makes him yarn for something else. Something he knows he will never find, or be satisfied by.... |

I remember when this album was released, it came with a booklet that had drawings to coincide with each song. The drawing for I was Only Joking, was of a high school hallway, with a boy looking down as if in shame, and a young girl with an obviously pregnant stomach. In that regard I always took it as him getting the girl pregnant, after probably confessing he loved her, but he was only joking. The last verse with the Principal ties it back into the high school theme of the drawing. As to the question of verse 7, I really have no idea, however "Corinthians 7 contains some of the clearest teaching in the Bible concernÂing abstinence before marriage, celibacy, sexual intercourse inside and outside of marriage, and sexual obligations. The people of Corinth were interested in proper sexual behavior and had written to the Apostle Paul about it." I can see the ambiguity in this song, but I don't believe it was initially written about a male friendship. Bruce may use a bit of revisionist history today when discussing the song, but even he has said his songs take on new and different meanings as they age. The reasons I think the song is about a relationship with a woman is because while it may be questionable in the finished version we have here, the genesis of the song was clearly about a relationship with a woman. During the early days of the Born to Run sessions, Bruce was singing a longer more drawn out version of Shes the One, which contained the early seeds of what would become Backstreets. Bruce was streamlining his wordiness during this period, and you can see the streamlining that took place from his earlier records to Born to Run, and progressed even further into Darkness. Obviously Shes the One is about a girl, I think we can all agree upon that, so... From Early versions of Shes the One: Most of all I hated that town and what they did, I hated the way they made us live, I hated him and his fancy ways, and I hated you when you went away And of course Backstreets: There was nothing left to say but I hated him and I hated you when you went away From Backstreets: Laying here in the dark you're like an angel on my chest Just another tramp of hearts crying tears of faithlessness (By the way, just how does this imagery project to a platonic male friendship?) Similar imagery from Shes the One: Now you're back and you're huddled in a corner Where you hated me baby just like a child. From Shes the One: Remember all those movies, baby, all those movies that we'd go see Trying to learn how to walk tough, talk rough Just like those heroes we thought we had to be. And of Course Backstreets: Remember all the movies, Terry, we'd go see Trying to learn how to walk like heroes we thought we had to be Furthermore when he would play Backstreets in concert in 78, he would slow it down and go into a free word version of Sad Eyes, which would later become Drive All Night released on the River album. Sad Eyes, like Drive All Night, was clearly about a woman, and her coming back into his life much like the last verse of Backstreets. Now of course you can say that Sad Eyes was just a new song idea he was trying out, but then why stick it in the middle of a song about male friendship? |

This is not a song about a prostitute, or a stripper. You have to look at where Springsteen was in his life when he was writing the Darkness album. The characters on this album are in their mid 20's. Bruce saw many of his characters still living at home, with their Dads. The girl in Racing in the Street sat on her daddys porch, The girl from Talk to Me sat with her daddy upstairs, the Preachers Daughter worked with her dad, and lived at home. Even the boys had an attachment to their parents, the singer in Promised Land worked at his Daddys garage, and of course Independence Day, written during Darkness is a goodbye to the singers dad. The album focuses on the point in your life where you are making that break to independence. The romantic days of being Born to Run, are giving way to manhood, responsibility, and a sense of settling down. Bruce also saw himself as this guy that you wouldn't necessarily want to bring home to meet your folks. Long hair, playing rock and roll, and normally looking pretty scruffy probably didn't go over well with the folks in general. This isn't really related in this song, but look at the song with Bruces vision of himself in mind. Now Candy is probably young, good looking, and coming from a family with a bit of wealth. Much like the theme that was played out in the I'm on Fire video years later. Scruffy mechanic, pretty rich lady, and some cross class romance. Candys Room has pictures of her heroes on it, because she is still living at home probably with movie posters or singers on her walls from her recent youth. Now the men calling her from the city are suitors, Candy is a pretty girl, and many men would like to be dating her. They will bring her things to try and convince her to go out with them, as men will do. There's a sadness in her pretty face, just like the girl from Racing in the Street, they are growing up, and the innocence, and freedom of youth is giving way to the realities of her life ahead. They kiss, and go driving deep into the night, Candy likes riding with the bad boy, similar to the singer in Preachers daughter. The singer is a little more naive than Candy, and she is trying to show him that there is a better life waiting, and when he pulls her close he feels he has everything. The final verse is just an affirmation of what we already knew, She has fancy clothes, and diamonds, because she comes from a more established family than the singer. She has men who would bring her anything to be in his position, but she wants the singer even though he can't give her those things. He affirms at the end that she knows while not much, he would give her all the things he has. |

Its no coincidence that this song ended side two, just as Racing in the Street ended side one. This song is a continuation of Racing In the Street, just a little further on down the road. Well if she wants to see me You can tell her that I'm easily found Tell her there's a spot out 'neath Abram's Bridge And tell her there's a darkness on the edge of town *** I always took Abrams Bridge to be a spot where guys would meet up to duel in their race cars, as in "Brothers Under the Bridges 85" "'Neath the trestless drinkin' the beer and the wine Now some came on run, some just to pass the time With the brothers under the bridges" and "Well me and my brother'd hitched a ride in Joey's pickup to the edge of town And we watched from the tall grass as the challenges were made and the duels went down" Everybody's got a secret Sonny Something that they just can't face Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it They carry it with them every step that they take Till some day they just cut it loose Cut it loose or let it drag 'em down Where no one asks any questions Or looks too long in your face In the darkness on the edge of town In Racing, the singers partner was a guy named "Sonny", and here in the second verse, he is again speaking to Sonny. Notice that the name is capitalized in the official lyrics, as it would be for a proper name. I think that gets overlooked, it is a direct tie back to Racing. As to the secret, I think he is referring to issues everyone carries around with them. Whether it be insecurity, fear of rejection, failure, success, whatever. Bruce always writes from a personal perspective, and while the song may not necessarily be about him, his characters also have many of the same insecurities, and fears he does. This is no longer the romantic Born to Run phase, but Darkness is a record about the transition from young rebel stage into adulthood, and the struggles that go along with it. It is the realization that you can't just live Born to Run, there is a more permanent existence, and you will either rise above your issues or they will drag you down. The entire record is about that defiance to not just give up and be one of the faceless hordes going to work every day, and living a meaningless existence. Some folks are born into a good life Other folks get it anyway anyhow I lost my money and I lost my wife Them things don't seem to matter much to me now Tonight I'll be on that hill 'cause I can't stop I'll be on that hill with everything I got Lives on the line where dreams are found and lost I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost For wanting things that can only be found In the darkness on the edge of town Again Bruce is writing about the things he has seen. Its not necessarily from a point of being bitter, it's just he grew up in a working class suburb of NJ, and has seen that for some people they are born into a good life, and some others may do whatever they have to to get it, lie cheat steal, or being pretty enough to get that life, whatever. The last few verses is that defiance showing through, like an old Black and white movie where the hero rises up against all odds, and does the impossible, with no apologies.It's meant as a moment of triumph, just as: I wanna find one face that ain't looking through me I wanna find one place, I wanna spit in the face of these.. Badlands or There's a dark cloud rising on the desert floor I've packed my bags and I'm headed straight through the storm It's gonna be a twister that'll blow everything down That ain't got the faith to stand its ground. It is a bold statement, a desperate cry against the life he so does not want to settle for. |
