This song is about the dualities of personalities and the consequences to life's actions. However, the ambiguousness of some of the lyrics can open this to many interpretations. I read once that Jackson did not like to be ambiguous early in his career but later was proud that his songs could mean different things to different people. As a matter of fact, Jackson said some of his earlier songs mean something different to him now.

This song has beautiful lyrics as well as vocals. Tremendous song.

There were two of me, and two of you. A song of betrayal. This was the album after Daryl Hannah left him for JFK jr. Very personal album.

Jackson is singing about betrayal. There were two of me (me and the fool I’ve been) and two of you (his lover and her other man)

Two who have betrayed love (the two of you) And two who have been true (me and the fool I’ve been)

Love is splitting apart Trying to make room for the two of you.
