| I love the final part. It's fairly clear that he's trying to kill himself, and it sounds like he's drifted apart from religion during his life. But now, at the end, he wants to find out whether God still loves him. Hence the brilliant double meaning in "I'm dying to know how much you care". | |

This is a brilliant piece of music. I get the feeling that the verses talk about different people - the lovers who want to break up, the ex-lover who wants to jump off a bridge, and the embittered person shut indoors with only alcohol as a friend. But it tells that whether it's personal strength or just inability to go through with it, it's always better in the morning. By the end, when Amy starts singing...wow. I love the lyrics, too, saying "Don't do anything drastic tonight. Just go to sleep. You might have a good day tomorrow, you might have another bad day. But you're going to wake up in the morning - just by closing your eyes, you've saved your life." The imagery of the title - "a thread cut with a carving knife" - is also quite interesting. Using a carving knife to cut a thread is way too drastic, in the same way that suicide is a drastic way of stopping yourself feeling sad. |

I would also agree it's about two lovers. The girl wants to love the guy, but he just isn't quite the person she wants him to be. They have been together for so long, that she doesn't want to give up on the relationship, but he has to change. "How much more am I supposed to take How much more am I supposed to break You asked for time, and time takes you away I'm alone and you're a man I need you closer to me" This is her telling him how he makes her feel - she needs more from him. He may have told her it will take time for him to change, but all that's happening is he is getting more distant. "Is this the story or Is this the end I always kill your shadow but, Here we are again" She can't work out whether it's just a minor hiccup in their relationship (the story), or something that will force them apart (the end). There have been times in the past where she may have tried to ignore the way he is, but the feeling always comes back. |

| I think this song is from a pupil to a teacher, or so the lyrics would indicate. The pupil misbehaves, and doesn't learn, but knows that if the teacher would only try to get through to him, he could make a success of himself. | |
