Cat Power – In This Hole Lyrics 9 years ago
I like both for different reasons.

Aimee Mann – Humpty Dumpty Lyrics 9 years ago
For starters, it's not written by Ornette Coleman. Songmeanings.com needs to fix this asap.

Bringing up the mental disorder comparison, I would think it's challenging the idea people have that those struggling with said diseases can just, "put themselves back together" and change back into the person they were "before". The narrator of the song in the first verse starts out asking her lover how they would feel to be "split in to fragments" and unable to "put the pieces back together" in order to make him understand that it's not that she doesn't want to change the way she is, but she can't. The chorus basically tells him no matter what he does she won't be cured. The second verse also shows that he's been ignoring signs that she's been sick and that this won't bring her back either.

Having dealt with depression while being in a relationship, this song describe perfectly what it's like to be in a relationship while dealing with one.

One of my favorite songs off of Flaming Red but also Patty Griffin in general. I love listening to it while i'm taking a long drive on a Sunday afternoon.

I think the song is a person who is capable of amazing things. But their fears and worry keep them from reaching their full potential

Maria Mena – Am I Supposed To Apologize? Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is about her mother's reaction to her first hit "My Lullaby" which was written about her childhood trauma and songs off of the album "Cause and Effect". It's also about how this emotional hurt lead her to music and to the stage. How music was her form of healing her wounds. The funny thing about this song is that after releasing "Cause and Effect" Maria said she would never realise anything that personal again, however, this song sort of goes against that. One of my favorites off of an amazing album.

Maria Mena – Internal Dialogue Lyrics 10 years ago
For starter, we don't know when each person wrote there song. Also, i've heard that phrase in songs from the 70's to now. It's a pretty common saying. She didn't steal anything.

Maria Mena – Power Trip Ballad Lyrics 10 years ago
More powerfully, it's written about her own childhood. "Why doesn't she eat" part is referring to her having an eating disorder as a child. Her parents also got divorced when she was 9.

Within Temptation – Crucify (Tori Amos cover) Lyrics 10 years ago
She didn't write lyrcs, Tori Amos did. Plus, the religion symbolism is obviously a metaphor. Nothing to do with God at all.

Lol. Seriously, what the hell songmeanings? Also according to them it wasn't Fiona Apple who wrote "Paper Bag" it was Phil Spector.

Does anyone know what this song is about? I imagine is about an aging going woman having remembers about her past. Maybe she is wishing she could relieve it?

Cat Power – Mr. Gallo Lyrics 11 years ago
The title of the song it's self is "Gallo" so I still think the spelling correct. Although, I didn't know she dated him. I heard at some point he was dating PJ Harvey, but I think that was just a rumor.

If only this was halfway as well written as a Counting Crows song. Also, as a Joni Mitchell fans, I should punch you in the face for calling music with poetic lyrics, "Hippie Shit".

Lauryn Hill – Adam Lives in Theory Lyrics 11 years ago
Yeah, I was enjoying this song until that line. Being Bisexual, that almost came off as insulting to me but then again, the lyrics are so layered that it can very well mean anything.

Liz Phair – One Less Thing Lyrics 12 years ago
I can't believe no one has commented yet! Well anyway the song is about a person "maturing" themselves by getting rid of things they love. At first this person thinks they are doing this to better themselves but realize they were to hasty and misjudged what they have. Now this person is stuck in a boring existence without the things they once loved.

submissions
Tanya Donelly – Manna Lyrics 12 years ago
.....I guess it could mean that. I still think it's about spending one last moment with their lover. Asking their lover to give their all at this last moment and despite that they won't be together forever, after he's gone she'll still be there.

Carly Simon – We Have No Secrets Lyrics 12 years ago
LOVE this song because off it's catchy beat,The jumpy piano playing off of the acoustic guitar. The writing is sharp to (although that's expected with Carly Simon) Off course the song is about a person in a relationship waiting to know more about their partner but at the same time afraid of the truth.

submissions
Tanya Donelly – Pretty deep Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's about a Person who is with someone who lie's to them. She basically say's she'll go down "Pretty Deep" to prove that this other person is lying to her. At the same time she still comfort him while he is down and she'll then go "Pretty Deep" to lie to him and make him feel better.

Eleanor Friedberger – My Mistakes Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree! I just love the writing and they way Eleanor sings the song. It has this almost 1950's pop vibe to it. A lot of the album does actually.

Erin McKeown – Aspera Lyrics 12 years ago
Per aspera ad astra or Ad astra per aspera is a Latin phrase which means "Through hardships to the stars" or "To the stars through difficulties".

Take that for what you want but i'm pretty sure it sums up the whole meaning of the song.

submissions
Erin McKeown – civilians Lyrics 12 years ago
As an over arching meaning for the song, I think it's about underestimating an individual group while praising another. The group has to overcome more obstacle and further prove why they should be granted the opportunity to fight.

Erin McKeown – a better wife Lyrics 12 years ago
Rethinking what I wrote, I think my interpretation is a bit off
I'm just something else he tried
a catalogue of interests in a catalogue of lives
i hid myself from him, i wouldn't say it was a lie
but hiding worked its way into the way we lived our lives

The narrator and her partner seem to have a very impersonal relationship. It seems very business like. She pretended to be something she wasn't as did he.

it was clear that he was troubled
he had trouble with his pride
but i could never tell if the fault was his or mine
so i drew myself away, i wouldn't say i left behind
a man who would never know the man he was inside

She is with a man who has trouble with self-confidence and the narrator can't tell wether she caused him to feel that way or if he already did. Regardless his lack of confidence caused her to draw herself from him. Because of the man's like of self-confidence he doesn't have a sense of who he is.

in a moment he was gone, i could see that he had died
by the quickening of blood and the fluttering of eyes
so i held him to my breast like all the better wives
who furnish men with love and never leave their side

After she leaves him, he loses all sense of self and doesn't know who he is. She feels guilty for leaving or for whatever reason she came back to comfort him

i'm just something else he tried
the salt that's left behind after tears have dried
and i suppose that i'll go on, after all it was my life
and all that i supposed i held has come to be untied

This confuses me as it could be interpreted in two ways:
First way: The first line is repeated again as she is now back in the same situation as before. She says rather so-so way that she'll forgot the sense of self she used to have in order to be "a better wife."

Second way: She decides to leave him anyway the verse is just a reminder of why she left. So again she nonchalantly says her life will go on, even though all she has ever known is gone.

Erin McKeown – a better wife Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's about a women who is with a man but the man doesn't know who he is. He never really cared for her as she was just "something her tired." Despite this, She is trying to comfort him like all the "better wives" but it doesn't seem to work. They break up and in the end all she has is herself. Or at least that's what I think. The writing her is superb and Erin Mckeown is becoming one of my favorite singer-songwriters.

Brokencyde – Bree Bree Lyrics 12 years ago
The meaning is...there is no fucking meaning. This band is a waste of time and space. Jesus they make Justin Bieber look like Bob Dylan in pure comparison. It's terrible! (If anyone who is a fan of this band has no idea who Bob Dylan is, you need to get some new taste in music!)

Hole – Petals Lyrics 12 years ago
I never thought of the song in that light, but it makes a great deal of sense. I always had this idea that the song was about how society seems to take away our innocence as kids. "Tearing off our petals" and "making us see the truth." I think I like your explanation better though.

Vanessa Carlton – Heroes and Thieves Lyrics 12 years ago
While I agree somewhat with the comments above, I have one small disagreement. When she says, "Oh Darlin" it's you i'm without. She doesn't meant that she discovered she's lost that person, it's that when she finds out the truth that she doesn't need that person anymore. It's more about how no matter what she does wrong, she can find logic and solitude with this person. The lyric above should be "When I can see" not "When I can't see." That one added letter changes the meaning of the song completely.

Vanessa Carlton – More Than This Lyrics 12 years ago
As for the meaning. I think she is saying how as people, we don't need much to be happy. We should be content with what we have and shouldn't ask for more. She using nature as a metaphor for life and what happens when we die. Hence the line, "someday our bones here they will lie" because after we die, we become part of the earth. The metaphor is being used to tell people to enjoy the time they have on earth. One day, despite or best efforts, we will die and never have that time back.

Vanessa Carlton – Fools Like Me Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is..wow. I could almost FEEL the pain Vanessa was going through while writing this song. In case you didn't know, during the creation of this album she and her boyfriend, Third Eye Blind lead singer Stephen Jenkins, broke up. Basically, she attempted to ignore the warning signs of her relationship falling apart,"the cracks." Because she was a "fool" she didn't see the cracks until it was to late or they were "broken in front of her." Or it could mean that she won't notice her relationship falling apart until it actually happens.

Either way, well written song. I get a Fiona Apple vibe from it, with how confessional it is about relationships.

Fiona Apple – Waltz (Better Than Fine) Lyrics 12 years ago
Everyone is right on the money with their interpretation of this song. Although, if I can add a lil more to what everyone is saying. Fiona Apple wrote this song and Extraordinary Machine, in response to her friends and family constantly worrying about her well being. Extraordinary Machine is more aimed at her family though, while this is her talking herself. She is,more or less, reassuring herself that it is okay to relax and not work all the time. That is the sign of a great songwriter, when he/she can write something very personal and yet have it somehow universal.
I love the melody to this song and how beautifully Fiona Sings it.
