I believe that he's being sarcastic. When you really don't want people to think that you can feel a lot of pain, you try to put on a front. He's telling her that he never cries - because he doesn't want her to know he actually has felt a lot of pain. All the imagery in this song can suggest that he actually has quite a few things to cry about. The lines here I think is the core of the song: "If there is a tear on my face
It makes me shiver to the bones
It shakes me, Babe
It's just a heartache that got in my eye
And you know I never cry, I never cry"
Like when you say you have something in your eye if your eye starts to tear up from feeling sad. It's a guy wanting to put on a strong front, but he's actually sad. He's saying he has a heart of stone, but he actually doesn't. He says the opposite of what he's feeling this entire song. I think we can all relate to not wanting to seem vulnerable. |

i agree that it's a song about wanting what you can't have. When he's saying things like "Don't you love her ways?", he's thinking of all the things he loves about her AFTER she's gone. And only when she is gone does he realize he "loves her madly". But I think it's just the kind of "love" you have for someone that doesn't want you anymore. After someone leaves you, even though you know the relationship was bad, you still don't like to be dumped. You start rationalizing all the red flags - thinking you still love the person. They probably keep making up after all the times she leaves him because he realizes this and probably confesses his love for her each time she leaves, but it just keeps going in the same pattern and they'll eventually break up again because the novelty of getting something he wanted has worn off |

maroon to me symbolizes something muddied. red that has been muddied with brown. so to me, love is maroon because it starts off as a simple color, red. but becomes complicated and dirtied when we enter the real life and realize love hurts. if you've ever tried to glue feathers on anything, you know that pieces of feathers fall off no matter what you do and sometimes the glue doesn't hold them well. the feathers can come off easily. i think he's saying that love is a big showcase, with the gaudy feathers. but the showcase isn't very stable because it lacks substance. love is just gluey feathers on a flume. the feathers falling away and exposing what's really happening |

i agree with AllisVanity. this song is so beautiful. i agree how the first verse basically is talking about how when you don't like someone like they like you and you think you can reject them because you don't think it'll hurt them because you don't know how much they like you. you think it's only a little bit. it's a blow to your ego nonetheless. i like when she says "and i've got nothing more to say about it" because it's like when you have all these emotions in your head but you don't feel like telling everyone how sad you are. because words don't accurately express it. so she just says "nothing more than you and me." also, i kind of feel like the actual chorus is talking about how no matter what the guy gave to her, she can't give him her heart. i feel like the guy is pulling out all the stops. he wants to give her flowers even if it is december and they are dieing. but at the time, it didn't matter to her because she couldn't love him like he deserved. and i think maybe at the end she maybe starts to finally like him but he's over her so he "let her down". and she's wondering why she didn't like him in the first place. very sad and happens a lot |

i also think it's a breakup song. in the first verse, i feel like he misses the last train home because you know when you're just so preoccupied or distracted about something (e.g. a breakup) that it can make you forget certain things? if there's something missing from your life, you don't really feel like a complete person. i think that this song is also talking about how when a person needs to put up a front or thinks that they are getting through a breakup, there still can be something that can bring you back to a person and miss them. and it's usually the simplest of things, not the grandiose gestures. for him, it's her eyes |

it's a breakup song where both of them find themselves becoming two different people while they are together. like, sometimes you don't even recognize or know who you are anymore in a relationship that just doesn't work. the first verse is just about how when it was good between them but all other versus suggest that it isn't that way anymore. sometimes when you're in a relationship with someone, you start mentally sabotaging it by thinking the worst (like if they are flirting/cheating with others, not who you thought they were, etc.) and it eats at you. i think that's what he means when he talks about the delusions. i think when he says "why don't you be you and i'll be me?" is him saying that they should go their separate ways so that they can feel like themselves again and not in constant hurt and misery because of their relationship. "...leave it to the breeze" is him saying that there isn't any use in trying to fix it. just leave the broken pieces where they are and carry on. he's finally ready to move on and wants her to, too. i think he still cares a lot about her, but he realizes that they've lost too much of themselves and they'll keep doing so if they stay together. |

i love how he uses the classic "a guy walks into a bar..." joke to describe how he met this woman. he's basically saying he should've known this wasn't going to end well - just like a bad joke. during the chorus, he explains general details of the relationship that follows and how she eventually leaves him. and then he just walks into another bar to drink her off his mind at the end of the chorus. like a vicious cycle. he mentions that even he would laugh at all this if it wasn't happening to him because of how cliche it sounds |

in my opinion, this song just means for this girl not to worry about everything so much. she has someone to rely on - him. about the "you were right about the stars. each one is a setting sun" part, i just figure it means that even though there are so many things that look like one thing, but they could be bigger and better than you could ever imagine. the part where she's crying, he's saying that her tears are sad, yes, but she feels that they're the only thing she has so she can deal with everything. for those of you who don't know what "our love is all of God's money" means, think of it this way... it means that they're doing "God's" work for him on earth. love is a a very special thing, and by loving each other, they're making the world better because they're creating something good - a caring and loving relationship between two human beings. they're not creating something depressing and sad like this girl's attitude towards the world. money is used to buy something or get something. so their love, being God's money, is used to make the world better even if it seems "small" (reference to the "you were right about the stars" part). finally, "last cigarettes. all you can get".... for those of you who used to smoke or want to quit, you know that you better make that last cigarette last because it's your last one ever! so she's trying to make it last to get through her seemingly melancholy life. but still, this guy is saying that it's ok! don't worry. i'll be your crutch in this world - not your tears or "cigarettes" :) |

there's not a big use for me giving my interpretation on here because it's pretty much been said in more or less words already, but i love this song so i just have to comment! this song really touches me. i think it's about this girl who's had a very hard childhood/life. instead of saving herself, she looks toward men to save her and fill the void she's had. she needs to be saved from all her sorrows. when she was younger, she often fantasized about a perfect gentleman. maybe she had father issues? in the last few lines, brandon is saying how yes, he doesn't look like jesus. he's not perfect. but little does she know that he can still be all she's looking for and the closest she'll get to finding a "savior" in this life |

like so many of the shin's love songs, i think this one ends badly also. yes, there are some lines that hint that everything's ok, but i think ultimately the relationship doesn't last. "you sure must be strong when you feel like an ocean being warmed by the sun" is basically saying that her ego is all built up from her knowing that he has feelings for her. the last line of the chorus also suggests that there's something missing even if everything is going great - "could be there's nothing else in our lives so critical as this little hole". he might have tried too hard and realizes that if someone loves you back, you won't have to break your back doing everything for them like "stealing a charm" because your significant other won't ask you to prove yourself time and again, and he finally realizes this |
