Supertramp – Rudy Lyrics 7 years ago
@[Nick_C:25930] Haha, I haven't even looked at this comment since I wrote it when I was...15? I can't believe I wrote "TRUTH".

The TRUTH is, I was 15 and just loved this song. Also, the reference to the hospital is in the song "Asylum" on the same album; however both Davies and Hodgson have said that "Crime of the Century" isn't really a concept album (even though the songs all have unifying themes).

You know, I'd never heard "Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)" until you mentioned it, so thank you! Also, damn that's a sad song to hear, especially as I'm graduating Uni haha. But as the song goes, "the show must go on."

Thanks for the reply, I still love this site (even if Genius.com kind of surpassed it), and it was a nice reminder :)

The Black Keys – Gold on the Ceiling Lyrics 13 years ago
Ok, I dunno about these lyrics. Listen closely, everythings good,, except it's "It's all right/Ain't no GUARD in my HOUSE." Plus, no offense, but it makes sense. The song's talking about stealing "gold on the ceiling", and how he know's it's gonna happen, and he's alright with it.

Supertramp – Rudy Lyrics 14 years ago
OK, so I haven't read the other other comments, but here's the TRUTH:

The song is from one of Supertramps earlier albums called "Crime of the Century." It's the album where they got another few of their hits, including "Dreamer," and "Bloody Well Right."

*IMPORTANT*
Basically, the entire album is a story. The first song, "School", talks about a kid named Rudy who hates the education system because it discourages free-thinking and creativity. The album then goes on to talk about how Rudy protests this in many different forms and to many people, including his friends, his parents, and his teachers. He becomes dissillusioned from society.

In "Rudy", Rudy has been put into a psychiatric hospital because he had a mental breakdown. The song itself talks about how Rudy has been let out and is able to co-exist in society, but is in a constant state of self-crisis. He tries to fit in, but really can't, and the line "He'll soon be back on his train," talks about how he eventually will accept that he will never fit in.

One of my fav Supertramp songs, so sad, so true. (Remember, this is based in Britain in the '70's.)

Don McLean – Vincent (Starry Starry Night) Lyrics 14 years ago
In a way, you're right. Even though van Gogh was never a religious person, and whoever said so is right, the line is about Jesus. Not because Don McLean or van Gogh were religious, but because Vincent van Gogh was LIKE Jesus. He was pushed around, and ridiculed, and cricified for his work and the lack of results that it brought. When McLean writes "Ragged men in ragged clothes," he is refering to how Jesus was also a poor person, but learned to overcome that adversity. The line "/A silver thorn, a bloody rose/" is refering to Jesus' crown of thorns when he was crucified, and the rose representing his love. Finally, "Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow/" may refer not to Jesus, but how Vincent van Gogh killed himself on a snowy night.

This is my opinion, not official.

Barenaked Ladies – You Run Away Lyrics 15 years ago
It is quite obvious about what this song is about.

If you don't know the story, here is the reason Steven Page left the band:

Back in about late 2008, the band was going to do a tour in DisneyWorld for their new kids album, Snacktime. But literally days before the tour, Steven's girlfriend broke up with him, and he flew into a rage. What happened next was appalling. He proceeded to start snorting cocaine in the front window of his house, where people on the street stop and stared. Eventually, someone called the police, and Steven Page was publicly arrested for cocaine possession. This was a huge blemish on the Band's record, and they cancelled the tour, for fear that the story would be a bad influence on kids. After that, Steven Page felt guilty for putting himself over the band. He had had problems in the past with drugs, but this was the last straw. He volunteered to leave the band, with a lot of pressure from Ed Robertson. When he left, Ed wrote this song to show how Steven Page had "run away" from the band.

I just want to clairify a few things:

1) Steven Page didn't just leave because he wanted to. The rest of the band pressured him to do it, so I don't like the fact that the song implies that Steven was a coward. He was humble and courageous enough to own up to his mistake, and to help his band.

2) Ed Robertson is an OK singer, but Stevven Page was the best. He made the BNL what they are today, and without him, BNL will never make it anywhere. He was the most increadible singer of the 21st century, and we should respect him as such. Never mke this incident make you thik less of him.
