The Sundays – Monochrome Lyrics 6 years ago
American lunar Landing summer 69. It was the biggest event in the world and adults and kids huddled around black and white TVs to watch. Monochrome is a b&w TV I guess, which probably 90 percent of the world still had in 1969, especially the English, I would imagine. I like the song because I was 4 years old that summer. I also like the line about her sister, warms my heart.

Written about Wheeler's then girlfriend Audrey and indeed a wonderful song. Every element is perfect. I always get chills when Charlotte's solo kicks in. Totally majestic.

I love this song too. Totally forgot about it then hauled out 100% Fun on weekend and listened to it for the first time in 15 years. The Environment? Giving up hope? Lies?

Drive-By Truckers – Danko/Manuel Lyrics 9 years ago
I dont think he is talking about DBTs in that line. Talking about "The Band" from Danko and Manuels perspective,. rolling over there graves, I think?. When he wrote this, he had only been in DBTs for about 3 years or less.

This represents one of those perfect POP songs from any era and the diversity of Stars music.

Drive-By Truckers – Zip City Lyrics 9 years ago
Mike Cooley is the only artists whose songs I never get tired of listening to. He only writes great songs, so inteligiently worded yet spoken through the mouth of an uneducated southern kid. After Jason left, Cooley quickly became my Favorite DBTs writer and essentially took the band on his back with English Oceans. Forgot the words to "Gravity's Gone" the other night in Asbury, NJ though....lol. Love Cooley, guy just reeks of classic rock writer gunslinger SWAGGER. Imagine, If Cooley had joined the Stones as a kid in the late 80's, like Mick Taylor, Stones would have had another rennaiasance period of greatness Last of a dying breed.

Jane's Addiction – To Match The Sun Lyrics 12 years ago
Beautifully straight forward song. Love how the song just soars in some places and absolutely grinds like dirty sex in others. The final refrain is gorgeous. The more and more I listen to this album, the more I realize how friggin good it is.

Just a ripper of a song. So much energy and passion, hooks galore and then it just runs out of gas and dies. Love the the guitars.

Genesis – The Musical Box Lyrics 12 years ago
Holy frig. How old were these guys when they did this, 21-22? I love the song especially the tempo change when Hackett's roaring Les Paul comes in and they just burn through the instrumental section. They really had it all as a band. Amazing songs and vocals and outstanding musical abilities. One of the greatest bands ever.

Wilco – Someone Else's Song Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it has to do with Jay Farrar dissing Tweedy's songwriting in the UT days. I am pretty certain that Farrar considered Tweedy to be a lousy songwriter. Tweedy really didnt' hit his stride til he wrote "Gun" which I think threatened Farrar a little bit. I could see Farrar telling Tweedy that his songs simply are not good enough to be on the records and more specifically that alot of them sound like songs that someone alse wrote years ago, like Dylan, Neil Young, Stones, Prine maybe had already done.

Uncle Tupelo – Wait Up Lyrics 13 years ago
Simple song, I love Tweedy's strange vocal cadence and the banjo picking that fills in the gaps. Banjo kinda sounds like; either the sound of a guys feet moving as he he desparately hurrying to get home OR the sound of a clock ticking while he is trying to do that. Or both concurrently. Kinda like the music they would play in a Disney movie when a little mouse is scurrying across the floor in haste.

Uncle Tupelo – Gun Lyrics 13 years ago
Tweedy's first foray into writing a REAL rock song about real things. He originally wasnt the strongest songwriter on the block
Kind of a coming out expression that threatened Jay a little. Up until here it was clear that Farrar was the writer of the meaningful songs whereas Tweedy wrote decent, yet, fairly unspectacular songs. Its is very Westerberg like actually in the way a an unsure individual is questioning what the things that he is doing and why bother because its going to backfire on him anyways.
Never seen Wilco do this in concert and they have done it often in the past. Less unlikely with each passing year unfortunately.

Uncle Tupelo – Sandusky Lyrics 13 years ago
Just a wicked instrumental that paints for me a vivid picture in my head of scenary while driving through the rural mid-west of America. Ohio/Ilinois, Mizzoo/Kentucky. Its so well done instrumentally, reminds us that UT actually developed into good players when they became a 4-5 piece. It was around this time that Michelle shocked had Wilco as her backing band on "Arkansas Traveller
" I think Jay definitely has his signature on this one. They almost sound like a different band I find, its so polished. Beautiful song.

Wilco – Should've Been In Love Lyrics 13 years ago
One of my top 5 Wilco songs. Definiteley about a missed opportunity with a girl or describing a whole period of his life where perhaps he was miserable about something. Instead of focusing his thoughts on hard times or even trivial crap he probably should have been in love with someone, that would have been so much more meaningful. Sadly beautiful song. That and Dash 7 really pull on my heart strings.

Wilco – Far, Far Away Lyrics 13 years ago
Ha thats funny, I have also seen them 6 times and they havn't done Far Far Away yet. I have been waiting but the liklihood that they will grows slimmer and slimmer each year as they are currently only doing about 2 songs from Being There in every show. I always get Monday, Outasite, Dreamer, Forget the Flowers it seems. Never seen them do Hotel Arizona either, thats my fav on the album

Wilco – One By One Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree, beautiful song. I love the arrangements, especially the peddle steel/slide guitar. Tweedy's vocals are so forlorn. I wish they could still give me that feeling with the newer music, but they dont.

Wilco – Hotel Arizona Lyrics 13 years ago
Yes, I love this song 2. It so reminds me of the "Old" Wilco and how they had to slug it out to survive in the early years 94-96. I love how the song builds to the crashing crescendo, culminating in Jay's (think it was Jay, maybe Max Johnson's?) scorching guitar solo. I find the last line of the song "thats all there is" really interesting cause Jeff sounds so world weary, I guess tired from being on the road, or tired of the weight he was carrying. Wilco doesnt really need to struggle anymore, they are pretty comfortable these days, I much prefer the struggling Wilco edition. Different times.

New Order – Regret Lyrics 13 years ago
New Order is a guilty pleasure for me. This song is fantastic. To me its the closest NO ever came to actual mainstream Radio to 40 etc.
Sumners slashing guitar, Hooky's pounding bass and Morris's ecstatic drumming make the song but the lyrics are infectious.
Its pure Pop brilliance!

Bob Dylan – It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) Lyrics 13 years ago
Absolutely brilliant, even moreso on Before the Flood where he spews it out in front of a live audience around the time of Nixon's impeachment. That song on Flood is probably my favorite Dylan song. EVEN almost 50 years later the song is MORE relevant than ever. The same stuff he is ranting versus, is the same crap we are dealing with today, almost word for word. Its nuts! People forget how great Dylan was. This song was just a minor blip on one of his earlier albums but its brilliant. If this was the only song he ever did I think he still would have his place in history.

Buffalo Tom – Summer Lyrics 13 years ago
Wicked song, masterful. I love songs about childhoods spent wasting time on long hot summer days. I am a big baseball fan but baseball meant alot more to me as an innocent 11-14 year old or until you find out that its business more than a game. in the 50s, 60s and 70s it wasnt like that. I am the same age as BT , I can totally relate to this song, however everyone has spent July-August in idle bliss can relate too. Typical mournful BT chord selection and passionate wailing. The song is so raw. "You waaaaasted Evereeeee Daaaaaaay" classic , love it.

PJ Harvey – 50ft Queenie Lyrics 13 years ago
To me she was a female Kurt Cobain at the time. She proved eventually that she was way beyond that.
To me the song is simple, its a dude bragging about his manhood and she is aping that. Her first 2 albums are directed at men being egoist dickheads who think with there mansize, women are just objects and harvest alot of pain trying to weed through them.

The Who – My Wife Lyrics 13 years ago
Typical silly JE song but probably his best Who song. Closest he could come to writing a LOVE song but certainly not reveallinfg any true sentiment. Pounding song live in concert, with Townshend slashing away on his Les Paul in between the thundering bass lines.Moon's drumming is at its best on My Wife. Fits in very nicely in the context of Whos Next

Death Cab for Cutie – Summer Skin Lyrics 13 years ago
Sounds to me like a very sensitive song about early love. Maybe from a 15-16 year olds perspective. Imagine a couple of unrelated families vacationing somewhere for a month or a whole summer like they do in England. A beach resort, camp ground, cottage somewhere where its all about summer and your you are immersed in these new surroundings. From a male's perspective, you fall in love, deeply in love with what could potentially be a life long soul mate. You are young and at your parents mercy ("we couldnt win") and when summer is over you go back with them to the "real" world through a "conduit". What a helpless feeling. I've been there, its awful, just a weepfest. This song is so beautiful, the imagery is so vivid.

Superchunk – 1,000 Pounds Lyrics 13 years ago
Wicked song about the difficulties of being 12 years old, a very tricky age where your body and your head are doing crazy things. At 12 I had a facefull of acne and almost couldnt look in the mirror without crying. My daughter is 12 now and she is so difficult to deal with, she used to be such a good girl, she still is but man its tough getting through to her. I know she is having trouble with school , boys etc. but I know she will pull through it and be OK.

The Beatles – It's All Too Much Lyrics 13 years ago
This one of my favorite Beatles songs if not my favorite. Even alot of big Beatles fans dont know this song, its semi-obscure for that reason. Its just a monster song, so powerful and rich. Beautiful walls of noise and wonderful insightful lyrics. George's voice is just pure honey. The openning bars blow me way every time and then when everything calms down and George's guitar rips off that sting of a note that sustains into the verse...wicked! Have heard this song at least 100 times and will never get sick of it. Its really the only Beatles song of its kind, I can't think of another one that has that type of pure power. The sequence in the movie when they play this is so warm and charming.

"With Your long blond hair and your eyes of blue" , sends chills down my spine.

Paul Westerberg – My Dad Lyrics 13 years ago
This song really hits home for me. My own dad, in his last years before he died had shrunk his living space and existance down to 4-5 little pleasures in life like so many Seniors do. My Dad was a rabid Montreal Expos fan and used to watch them on a modest size TV, he would get angry if I suggested buying him a new bigger and better one. For his last 4-5 years, everything he already had in his life was all he would need going forward. He occupied his time , reading the newspaper, talking to my bros on the phone, watching or listening to the Expos games on the Radio and looking forward to seeing my young family on Sundays. Any time we ever tried to buy him something he insisted we bring it back cause it was a waste of money. As for Doctors
, yeah , they were preety much useless and it was a waste of time and taxpayers money for them to continually see him. The line about the ointments (not anoitments) is hilarious. When I was growing up, we always had a medicine cabinet full of old creams and rubs , probably going back several decades. He never through any of that stuff out cause it was a waste and you never know when you might need it again.

Bloc Party – Sunday Lyrics 13 years ago
An absolutely beautiful love song about a love so precious and unconditional. This song gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Reminds me of of days of young love, being so in love that you want to cry for no reason. Drunken Saturday nights, things said, maybe even hurtful things. You get up on Sunday morning in a haze but everything has refreshed itself and you enjoy the little pleasures in life with the one that you adore. Nothing matters but you and I and I will love you through thick and thin forever. They say that REAL love is like seeing UFOs , many have claimed to have experienced the phenomena but very few actually have.

Paul Westerberg – World Class Fad Lyrics 13 years ago
Always thought that this was Paul writing about himself and his "legendary" status amongst the music critics. Never really one to believe in his so called "genius" status, maybe he thought it was all over in terms of the fame he achieved as a Mat. He now has to go it alone..and...was all the glory heaped upon him just a FAD propogated by the critics?

Fear of failure, but he is trying to drum up the confidence he needs going forward as a solo artist perhaps realizing he wont be able to hide behind the "Cute" drunken sloppiness that the Mats were.

"the pressure is gonna build ya" ...."somethings gotta move here". Thats him saying "Gotta get my shit together or else I am 9-5 bound.

or not:)

Drive-By Truckers – Danko/Manuel Lyrics 13 years ago
Just a downright sad song.

The last 3-4 times I watched the Last Waltz, I discovered so much about the conflicting personalities within the band. It wasnt just a documentary about a rock group's last show, featuring some of the finest acts of the day. Its really about that "fork in the road" that people reach at some points of there lives and how they deal with it. It was very clear to me that Rick Danko and Richard Manual were extrememly distraught about what they were going to do going forward. Rock Stars all there lives , at the peak of The Band's popularity...booom...its all over kids. Now you have to go and get a real job. We are on the road, we "own that road'in fact. Manuel is pretty messed up, Danko looks like a lost puppy. These guys reeked of music and were superstars in the day. Every time I see Danko in the Last Waltz , it saddens me to see a guy with talent and passion ooozing out of every pore and know that he has no idea what he is going to be doing tomorrow. Rick Manual, beautiful angelic voice, such a superstar within the "Band" concept, would struggle on his own. Never would they be anywhere close to what the had in the glory days.

I saw Robbie Robertson all sexy, cool and confident talking about how much of a chore it was to be in a band and be on the road all the time. he was tired and ready for a change. No doubt it was just a matter of time before he would be a household name.

No knock against Robertson. Just felt bad that it was essentially him pulling the plug on The Band, the only one who really had a chance at capturing that magic again at some point in his very bright future.

I cant really say from what perspective Isbell is singing from or what exactly the song is about but watch the Last Waltz and tell me if you pick up these feelings.

Sun Kil Moon – Glenn Tipton Lyrics 13 years ago
I am going to go against the grain here and say that the words to Glenn Tipton are not metaphorical in any sense yet from the perspective of a souless killer.

What we have here is a very simple, lonely and deranged individual who, though mostly deatched from the world, has 3-4 elements in his life that have kept him on the fringe of a normal existance. His Dad, representing the most powerful element of right and wrong. Elenor at the coffee shop, an ordinary woman who probably serves him coffee and treats him nicely and perhaps another would be love interest who he never really has a shot at but she also treats him nicely and makes him feel sane. Dad and Elenor pass on, naturally, lets say , whereas the girl ends up as his victim when he is pushed over the edge by her rejection.

Void of any type of conscience, he speaks very matter-of-factly about events ranging from trivial, meaningless items; like the comparison of pop celebrities, the passing of his Dad, the woman at the donut shop where he felt comfortable and then what he did to the girl having found something in her room/jeans that made him feel bad.

No singular event is is more important than the next, just random events that have come and gone. The song is about loss in a sense but I dont see the sadness as being first person. Its not so much about losing dearly loved ones rather than losing pillars in your life that keep you propped up against normalcy. Without the grounding influences its easy for one who is on the "fringe" to give into his impulses and lean towards a dark existance.

Love the song, never get tired of hearing it. I'd say Kozelek is capable of writing a dark song such as this.

I am going to against the grain here and say that the words to Glenn Tipton are not metaphorical but in fact are very real from the perspective of souless killer.

Here is a very simple, lonely and deranged individual who although mostly detached from the world, has had 3-4 elements in his life that have kept him on the fringe of being socially able. His Dad who probably represented a strong and guiding figure but who eventually passed on, Elenor at the coffee shop, who he also loses over time and a girlfriend or would be girlfriend who will quite literally die at his hands.

Void of conscience, I find him speaking very matter-of- factly about these events in life and about very trivial and meaningless items like comparing pop celebrities. My Dad died, the woman at the shop, where I spent a great deal of time and felt socially accepted, also died. I found notes in a girls jeans that hurt me, I killed her and that may not be the end of his unnaceptable behaviour. Its like no single event is more important than the next. I dont think its strictly about loss and the sadness associated with losing loved ones as much as losing centers of influence that keep you real in a difficult world.
Without the structure or the grounding influences its easy for one who is on the "fringe" to give into the impulses of a deep dark existance.
