When you take a minute to look at the lyrics and meaning of the song, you can easily sense that it's about Kelly's father and references to him divorcing her mother when she was young. She herself has stated that it was traumatizing for her as a child, and it stuck with her as she grew up. The first verse addresses this pretty simply, and with the lyrics: "I traveled fifteen hundred miles to see you/ Begged you to want me/ But you didn't want to", suggests that when she was older, she went to go visit him and try to reconnect with him, wanting him in her life, but he wanted nothing to do with her. The first chorus tells us that by finding love in her husband, her faith in men is being restored, that she's found someone who is the polar opposite of what her father was. Her father might've only contacted them when he needed money, and never for anything else...no love, no affection, nothing. Her husband is the man she wanted her father to be like, and never had. The second first flashes to supposedly a while after Kelly won Idol, when she became a household name and started bringing in money. Her father suddenly comes back, saying he sorry for leaving her and that he wants to be back in her life, but as Kelly sings, "all of your words fall flat". She isn't falling for it, "But/ your love, it isn't free/ It has to be earned/ Back then, I didn't have anything you needed/ So I was worthless". She can plainly see that he'll only give her the time of day if it will benefit him. When she was younger, he couldn't have cared less, but now that she's a celebrity and has money, he's suddenly 'all so important to him'. The second chorus is almost exactly the same as the first, except with the last couple of lines of "Piece by piece, he restored my faith/ That a man can be kind and a father could stay", which reinforces the fact that she sees her husband as the man that could be a great father, and she believes it can be a real possibility in her life now. The last chorus brings it around full circle: "Piece by piece, I fell far from the tree I would never leave her like you left me And she will never have to wonder her worth Because unlike you, I'm gonna put her first And no, he'll never walk away He'll never break her heart He'll take care of things He'll love her Piece by piece, he restored my faith That a man can be kind and a father should be great" She says that she will never be like her father, that she'll never leave her daughter the way her own father did. Her husband will be the father she always wanted to their own child, and her faith is restored that there are still good men left in the world that can be a great father to their children, since she had such a horrible experience with hers growing up. It closes up the song nicely, with an ending that makes you feel good for her, seeing how she knows better now, and won't let anyone take advantage of her and her hard work. Personally this is one of my favorite songs from her new album, with the feeling the song gives and the story she shares. I can see this staying a favorite of mine for a long while. :) |

To be honest, that's all I'll ever truly see the meaning of the song to be too, since as you said, it's the actual meaning. There will never be another true meaning, since we now know exactly what it was based off of. When I hear this song, I'll always think of the dying boy who felt he disappointed his father. Now that I know the real story, it's too ingrained in my head to think otherwise. I guess the best way to say what I'm trying to convey is that, you can know the true meaning, accept it, and acknowledge that the meaning of the song is what Doug explained. You can't try to say it's something else when you know the real reasoning. That is just ignorance if you try to deny what the songwriter was saying. What you CAN do however, is 'imagine' the song and its lyrics in a different situation. You know it's not the real meaning ,and you'll never try to say that it is, but you can see how it plays out in a different scenario. Just to try it out. It's like when you hear the song for the first few times, BEFORE you know the real meaning. You imagine what the story could possibly be, what scenario could play out, etc. If Doug never explained to us what the real meaning was, we'd all still be doing this very thing. Even though the true story is out there and official, that doesn't mean you can't be curious and see how the song would fit in a different scenario. I'll be the first to admit that my initial comment on here about the song being 'self explanatory' was jumping the gun quite a bit. It was before I knew the real meaning, and it was one possible tangent that I felt the song could go on. Just because I know Doug's story now, though, doesn't mean I can't brainstorm how the song would go in a different scenario. I guess it's the amateur machinima film maker in me, thinking of different ways a song can be interpreted. I tend to imagine songs being used in different situations and seeing if there's a way I can make it work believably. I apologize to anyone who felt I was trying to push my interpretation as the real one, or that I was putting down Doug's real reason. All I was intending was to stretch the imagination and pretend how it could work in other scenarios. No disrespect intended whatsoever. :) |

I know this reply is incredibly late, but I'm not saying the story with the boy is false at all! If anything I believe that to be the real meaning above all other interpretations. What I'm saying is, if you want to look at the song in a different way, to add variety in how we're all looking at this song, then that can be a different tangent. It'd get very boring very quickly if every song only had one absolute meaning, and nothing else could be said about it, right? :D |

Just a friendly FYI, it's actually not autotune at all. He's using a vocoder machine. It's an effect that doesn't 'fix' a voice (and/or its imperfections), but rather it multiplies the voice and turns it into a harmony. The most popular song to use this effect is "Hide And Seek" by Imogen Heap. It's not used to fix a voice, but rather to either add emotion or put more focus on the other instruments, depending on how it's used. In this case, it both added emotion (at least in my opinion), and it made me appreciate the piano and strings that much more. Has a very ethereal tone to it. I will say though, you're right about Brendon's voice. It's amazing on its own and I can never get enough of it. |

You know, you'd think I'd be concerned that my 12 year old niece is listening to 1D with some of their songs being pretty obvious it's about sex, but then I remember BSB and *NSYNC, and especially the latter's one song "Digital Get Down". Yeah, my generation did the same thing. LOL |

I think this song can have a couple meanings, depending on how you look at it. One (not as likely of a meaning) is about a girl who tends to fall for troublemakers and guys that end up being horrible for her. They're the kind that want her to become what THEY want her to be, by telling them what to wear, how to have their hair styled, how they act, etc. They don't respect her the way she should be respected. Even though she's comfortable around other guys and has no problem playing with their emotions a tiny bit when she doesn't have affectionate feelings towards them, as soon as the guy she's feeling for is around, she doesn't know what to do, is afraid to do anything, and just freezes. She's afraid of speaking up, fearing that something horrible would happen (as many girls in this situation would feel). She feels that this is happening again with her newest guy, and she decides to put her foot down and prevent herself from falling for the same trap. She tries to speak up and be her own self, but he thinks she wants more of his attention, and it comes out all wrong. She hates feeling that way, but she likes being attended to, being 'cared' for, even if it's for the guy's benefit. She's determined not to fall in love with the guy though, because she knows it'll be doomed, seeing how he's treating her. She knows that she's the one that usually makes the mistake of staying with these losers, so she's trying to abstain from her usual routine. **Again, not the likely meaning, but it could be interpreted as such to some* The second meaning that I feel is more accurate is more simple. It's about a girl who loves to tease guys, mess around with their heads a little bit and doesn't have trouble being around them. She starts having feelings for a guy in particular, and it scares her a bit. She wants to dress up, gussy herself up and be more womanly for him, and wants to impress him. She starts feeling nervous and giddy around him, and when she tries to play it off and be her typical self, it backfires and she falls all over him. She hates feeling so defenseless like that, so she's trying her best to keep her distance and not fall for him. She seems like she's never been in love before, or that she HAS, but has been burned badly, and never wants to be hurt again. As the song keeps going though, she's feeling less and less able to contain herself, and eventually she can't help it anymore (I'm flying too close to the sun, and I burst into flames), and she's at her breaking point. I also get a sense though that she wants it all to happen a little bit, but she's terrified that her mind will end up backing out of the relationship, and that she's "scared she'll take off in a run" and screw it up. We don't know if she finally gives in, but we sense that she can't take anymore temptation. All we know is that if she indeed falls for him, she'll feel as though she's having a heart attack, too overcome with emotion, defenselessness, passion and fear all at once. ^ Again, those are MY two possible interpretations. The latter of the two is one I personally believe in more, but they both can work with this song. |

Well, it may very well be about a boy dying in front of him, and I can definitely see that in the song. It's a bit more saddening in that meaning, even, because it involves a little boy. :( Of course others are gonna have different interpretations of the song...that's inevitable. In my head, I now envision something a little bit different than what I put last here ^^. I was reading too much into it I think lol. I still imagine a woman who's involved in a car crash, but she's by herself, and maybe she was leaving her father's house after a heated argument. Hurtful words may have been said, and she was racing away because of her anger. Then something caused her to get into the accident. She's able to call a loved one with her phone, and she tells them to let her dad know she's sorry that she's made the whole situation worse by being the accident, since she doesn't believe she's gonna make it. I still think the end suggests a sad fate, because it still gives me an eerie feeling. Now, I'm not saying that the meaning of the boy being pushed out of the dar and bleeding is wrong, because if Doug indeed meant that, then it's most definitely the TRUE meaning. I just like to see how else it can be interpreted, see how it can fit in different situations. :) |

This song, geez, it's just so amazingly beautiful and emotional that I always feel the need to cry at the end. I'll forever love it. Anna actually explained the whole meaning of the song in a concert a few months back (there is a video on youtube). She said that she went through a period of 'self-infliction', and was to a point where she looked in the mirror and saw herself. She then spoke to herself and told herself all the things she needed to hear for her to get through the pain and sorrow. That's what this song is about, the words she needed to hear to tell herself that she'll be alright. She said that the song leaked onto youtube, and it became pretty popular, and that a fan wrote to her and said that the song helped her to stop her own self-infliction. The song had become her own song just as much as Anna's. At that point, Anna decided that the song was just too powerful to keep to herself, so she recorded it for her album for others to hear. That's a pretty good story to go along with such a gorgeous song. <3 |

| ROFL I think almost every single person that hears this song for the first time will think it's about sex, and to be honest, most of the time I think of it as that as well. Although sometimes, if I feel more like thinking really deeply into it, I can see what he's talking about with no problem. Guess it just depends on my mood. Still, your comment made me giggle. :P | |

Honestly, this song is practically self explanatory. The singer (I'll refer to him as "him" or "he" since 'the singer' will get annoying quick lol) is telling a loved one (most likely a girl he loves) to hold on and not die, after a horrible car crash. They don't say for sure if he was in the crash as well, but for this explanation I'll say he was. :) Anyways, the girl has given up hope and has a gut feeling she's going to die before help arrives. She tells him to tell her dad that she's sorry for having this happen and making her dad's life sad now that she's dying, but he is in denial and refuses, saying that she'll be alive to tell her father that herself. Throughout the song he's telling her to hold on and don't stop trying and living, and don't keep being afraid, because he's there and everything will be alright. He's promising that he'll be a dear friend and stay by her side as she gets better if she only holds on and survives until help arrives. The energy of the song reflects the urgency and the emotions running through both the girl and the guy. The end makes this extremely known as the power picks up, Doug's singing gets stronger and more forceful, and he's sounding as if the guy is becoming desperate to save the girl, as she most likely is losing strength and starting to fade away. What made this song instantly heartbreaking for me was the very end. The way the song just abruptly ends mid-chorus, unexpected and poignant, as well as how the singing is practically shouting (in the right way, mind you) the last few words and just echo away, suggest a grim fate. The almost-untraceable minor key that plays as the song is just about faded out give a sad feeling to the song to me. To me, the end tells me that the girl right at that moment couldn't hold on any longer and died, and the way the singing just ends tells me that he realizes that, and the fight and struggle is over. This song is such an emotional one, even though it doesn't immediately imply that with the way the song sounds (almost sounding like a car-type of song, actually), but it certainly does come across in the singing and lyrics. They did an amazing job with this song, and while this wasn't nearly one I liked when the album came out, after seeing the meaning behind it, I am starting to appreciate and like it that much more. It's essentially a sad story, but one I don't regret listening to. |

LOL ironically, a few months ago, whilst listening to it, I thought of that too. I agree though, it was a severely depressing book. I was getting worried that it wasn't going to get better, but thank goodness it did. :P Anyways, yeah I thought of New Moon with this song. I'd say it was in both Edward and Bella's POV, but in sections. I won't elaborate for those of you who don't want anymore Twilight invading everything in sight. haha Seriously though, this is an amazing song. It puts me in a trance almost, and I feel so relaxed and content afterwards. :) The meaning is self explanatory, so I won't say it again. haha Awesome band. |
