I know the song is a reference to a videogame, and it's also an instrumental, but somehow, this song makes me think of the way the pulic need some kind of freak, a kind of icon yet someone they can pick apart. I don't know.

According to Matt, this is about his room-mate that he was living with when he moved out of his Grandma's house... The guy dealt coke and herion, and I guess some of their early music was inspired by how fucked up his room-mate was. Apparently Cave is about the same guy.

Young love. To me, this represents that struggle of caring about what others think (whether that be peers or adults) and wanting desperately not to, and finding that release and carelessness in someone else.

Darling song, I listen to it whenever I feel down and need to feel better.

Muse – Hoodoo Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is beautiful beyond nearly anything else I have heard. I don't think it has any specific meaning. To me, this song is just about the Search that most people and all artists go through. The struggle to find out what's important and what everything means and what you're looking for. Personally, I feel as though this song is Matt reaching out, looking desperately for someone who understands him, or vice versa. Just musings...

Anyway, absolutely gorgeous song, the buildup is devastatingly beautiful. I find the intimacy of the song-- the sound of Matt's lips and tongue moving, the thick sliding of the guitar strings, and the tapping of Matt's foot upon the ground-- all refreshing and undeniably human after so much of their dramatic prog rock (don't get me wrong, that music is AMAZING).

"Hoodoo" also means "voodoo", they're the same thing. Voodoo and Hoodoo are both the religion birthed in the Carribean islands that's centered around magic. Kind of creepy stuff, but slightly entrancing.

Beach Fossils – Sometimes Lyrics 15 years ago
This whole album is absolutely beautiful to me. It creates a landscape of sunshine and rain and bittersweet love, a world that's completely realistic but also full of dreams and disappointments, fantasies, daydreams, lies, wishes, hopes, everything that we wish we could change but also love.

There's something incredibly innocent about this song. This particular song reminds me of a certain friend of mine. We have an intimate relationship, although we share the same gender. There's nothing sexual about our relationship, but we love each other. This song reminds me of that kind of innocent, intimate love, no matter the age or gender.

I love discovering new music. I actually just walked down to Everyday Music with a $20 allowance bill in my hand and saw this album on the shelf and just grabbed it. I don't know what posessed me to, but it's one of the best purchases I've made.

Don't know if we all know Yorke well enough to discern the meaning of this song, this one is pretty personal and slightly random sounding.

I absolutely love the part that goes:

"I wish it was the sixties,
I wish we could be happy,
I wish, I wish that something would happen."

Radiohead – My Iron Lung Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, it seems as though this song is about the general acceptance of some kind of relicance on medical/chemical help in modern society. Everybody's hooked on some kind of "pill", whether it be kiddie vitamins or pot or morphine or antidepressants or ADHD meds or Advil or whatever the fuck else we've managed to shove down our throats.

I think this is also the anger that Thom probably felt towards always having people tell him he's crazy, batshit fucking crazy. I know that I have an incredible amount of anger towards people constantly telling me there's things wrong with me, telling me I should get this or that procedure, take this or that pill, see Dr. So and so, live the rest of my life hooked on pills and getting cheap thrills off of alcohol and being responsible. It's so frustrating, and to me, this song is kind of a "fuck you, I don't need your fucking help, I might be screwed up, but that' me, that's life, stop trying to make things the way you want them."

Radiohead – Talk Show Host Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that those lines could also be a reference to a feeling of hateful, morbid masochism, while he's "hiding out", he's waiting for society to come and root him out, to shoot him down and end his life.

Radiohead – Talk Show Host Lyrics 15 years ago
For me, this song has a number of meanings.

First off, the general dark, repetitive, grey sound of the song indicates some kind of depression. To me, it seems as though this is a reference to kind of a serious depression, although I doubt Yorke was making literal references to clinical depression. Often, people with depression (myself included) hate viewing their "problem" the same way that the rest of the world does. We often feel alienated and confused, as well as sickened by the stereotypes and assumptions regarding people with depression. I feel like this song is kind of a "fuck you, I don't need any diagnosis, I don't need your pretty packaged pills" sort of thing. A refusal, a challenge, "come and get me, make me perfect, I'll never be quite right for you, will I?"

But on the reversal side of that, "he's ready". That phrase, "I'm ready," has a double meaning. In one light, he's ready to fight back, ready to stand his ground and protect his mind, infected or not. However, that one phrase also indicates a hunger, a need to be normal, fit in, be happy, but his depressed mind refuses to admit that's what he wants. But still, he can't help wondering and even hoping that he can become happy, can live in a shallower surface rather than being forced to wallow in the dredges of negativity and having to look at the world completely stripped away, seeing every flaw, the sickness of humanity.

Also, he "wants to be someone else". This is also a double reference. On one hand, he wants to please veryone else by fitting in with society, by being somebody who says their making a difference, someone who has babies and works in the office and has a smile on their face. He wants this, but he also hates that kind of ideal person and lifestyle. One of the many struggles of depression is often the feeling of alienation-- you can never be like that. And that causes you to hate that kind of lifestyle, often, but it's so justified! You feel like, "how can I even look at that from a positive point of view? This is sick, fake, plastic, I don't want to be a part of this!". It's all incredibly confusing, and he wishes he could get out of the body that forces him to see this way.

However, this song does have an incredibly erotic tone. There's something slow and melancholy, but still sexy about the song. This, to me, seems like the feelings where sexuality and anger become blurred, and there's a kind of violent desire, a passion that becomes confused and wild. Again, we have another contradiction, where at the same time that he's incredibly passionate in his hate towards the "ideal lifestyle" and the fact that he's disfunctional, he also can't feel anything. Everything feels empty, pointless, frightening, and so he's attempting to fill these voids with any kind of sexual interaction.

Also regarding the undertone of desire in the song, there's something beckoning and sexual about the lines:

"You want me?
Fucking well come and get me,
You want me?
Come on and break the door down,
I'm ready.

It mostly speaks for itself, this weird confusion between sexual desire and near-hate.

Summed up, though, to me, this whole song just sounds like suicide through drowning.

This song is fucking BEAUTIFUL, and the part where the build-up just reaches it's amazing peak of "paying attention, paying attention" is just an amazing release.

To me, this song is about somebody trying to get other people to open their eyes, while at the same time attempting to keep up with society, becoming depressed by both the fact that there is no way for them to fit in with the rest of humanity(but also struggling with the fact that they don't want to feel the need to fit in) and the fact that no one else can see the beautiful nirvana that humanity could create for themselves if they at least tried to open their eyes and stop wallowing in greed and fear and power.

Radiohead – The Amazing Sounds of Orgy Lyrics 15 years ago
This song speaks to me so much because of the strong link to this kind of anxoius, monotonous worry. I get these things that are most closely described as a panic attack... Although from what I've heard of LSD, it almost sounds more like a trip. I see spots and go into tunnel vision and get incredibly paranoid and start mumbling strings of words. I don't think I'm crazy (haha) but basically, this song feels exactly like these trip/panic attack things. And I've never done drugs, so I don't have much of a comparison... But I feel a kind of connectedness to Thom Yorke in this way. We're both slightly crazy... We see the world in a way that scares the shit out of us, but we also know how we're supposed to behave. And it's scary as hell. Maybe we're kindred spirits, or maybe we're both just insane. But to me, this song doesn't even have a meaning except for the extreme, insane fear that accompanies the ability to see the world for what it is, and the fear of accepting the denial in return for some false peace of mind.

I totally understand this, from the kid's point of view. My parent's are always telling me all this shit about how I can do better and stuff, and then when I actually show them that I'm upset and angry, they just croon the same meaningless words over and over. But on a more political or universal level, this is just an analogy of how those in power expect us to blindly follow along. It' about being lost, and how the so-called "domestic life" reflects our fucked-up society.

Muse – Soldier's Poem Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree, Count Ryan, that this song totally shares a similar musical style with many of the songs on Showbiz. I think that's beacause of the fact that it has that slight "ballad" feel to it. A sad song of acceptance. This song is about accepting the fact that no matter how often you fight, how many men you send away, who wins the wars, there will still be no justice. People will still do wrong, and the world will never be right.

I find this song interesting and really sweet. Not in a girly, "oh, how sweet, like a puppy!" sense, but in a way that this song is nearly reminisent. I love it.

Muse – New Born Lyrics 15 years ago
In an interview, Matt Bellamy stated that if the song were to have a strong meaning, it would be the concept that humans have become so ruled by technology and civilization, conquered by machines and metal. New Born is supposed to be about that "that urge, that NEED to return to a more physical relationship with the world. You know, that could be sexual, too...". This song is beautiful, doens't even need a meaning.

Muse – Feeling Good (Nina Simone cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
I definitely feel that this song is sarcastic, but I think there's a reason why.

To me, it seems like previous to this song (figuratively) the idea is that Matt was pressured very strongly to turn a leaf, start over new, and this song is basically his way over sarcastically looking at the world as a far too positive place. The lyrics on their own could be totally sincere, but the powerful, slightly angry vocals, kick-ass drums, and grinding bass cannot be cheery. Great, but not cheery.

I love this song, though. The sound distortion is excellent. Muse has a serious gift of making sound distortion ridiculously beautiful. With some bands that do lo-fi stuff (*cough cough* CRYSTAL CASTLES *cough cough*) you sort of have to work to find the beauty in it, and even then, it hurts your ears like hell. Muse, on the other hand, use sound distortion as a way of achieving a whole new level of beauty to their music. It's not just noise, you know?

Beautiful cover. The original is great, too, but Muse really breathed life back into this song.

This song is beautiful, underrated, and RIDICULOUSLY sexy... To quote a YouTube comment:

"This is a guitar and a bass having sex."

It's a very chill, relaxing song that just sounds so... sexy. The colour on the cover of the EP showcases the song perfectly: an incredibly deep blue, "the colour of the ocean at twilight, the kind of colour that gives you shivers and makes you cry for no reason".

I have anxiety issues, and I listen to this incredibly amazing song to mellow out. It's beautiful.

I think what I love most about this song is that it's so different and yet so similar to the Muse we all know and love. B-sides like Bedroom Acoustics, Piano Thing, and Nishe show a completely different, mellow, genius, sexy, softer side of Muse. Although Plug In Baby IS plenty sexy...

Haha, enough of that. What I love most is that in a super early interview where he was asked what he would play in different circumstances, he said that in a romantic situation, he'd love to play a sort of Spanish acoustic tune, but that he didn't have the nails nor talent.

Vampire Weekend – I Think Ur a Contra Lyrics 15 years ago
So, there are two possible meanings for this song. First off, "contra" could just be a term meaning that one lover is constantly contradicting another.

Or, their referring to the Nicaraguan Resistance fighters of the 80's. I like that idea more, because I don't think that Vampire Weekend is the kind of band who writes annoying little love songs. I mean, all of their songs have these little references to historical events and conspiracy stuff, or some sort of like, university reference. It's all very random to us listeners, and that's what I love about it. I mean, they wouldn't be the Vampire Weekend we all know and love if they started writing whiny little love songs. Their thing is a jumble of words and meanings from the frontman's mind. And I LOVE IT.

Jem – They Lyrics 15 years ago
Great song. Only problem I have with it is that Jem herself is sort of singing in a monotone, which fits with the song, but can get annoying after a bit... Still, though, wonderful song with a powerful meaning:

To me, this song is about the way that society has us boxed in, with certain beliefs and expectations. The song is sort of asking "Who really decided all of these things? Why can't we get out of this?" And then she starts talking about how life would be better if we weren't restricted by the expectations of society. We don't even think about totally "normal" day-to-day things, like the fact that you shouldn't walk around naked in public to the fact that it's not okay to yell in a restaurant. This song is asking if this way of living is really okay, really healthy? Jem is reminiscing about a simpler, more natural time, where people weren't expected to be perfect and society didn't restrain us, but instead helped us to live better lives.

God damn, wish it really were that way.

Muse – Host Lyrics 15 years ago
Oh my god, this song is SO OBVIOUSLY not about a girl. It's about his life, a poor teenage Matt Bellamy stuck in his tiny little English small-town (which he has not hidden his disgust for) and not being able to see the world! I feel the same way ALL THE TIME. I mean, being thriteen and stuck in your little town with people you can't trust, who constantly "abuse your trust" and "bleed you dry" can make you sick. That's how I feel, anyway. I think this song is just about his disust with having to follow rules all the time and constantly live up to the expectations that come with being a teenager. I mean, he was only like, 17 or 18 when he wrote the song.

Anyway, AMAZING song, the live Plymouth version is by far my favorite demo song by them. So raw and unedited and beautiful. Matt's voice sounds so desperate. I love Showbiz (and songs of that era) because I can just relate to them so well.

Cheers.

I'd like to see you try to the same G-flat that he hit in Showbiz. High voices can be ridiculously sexy in singing.

And FYI: His wide vocal range and great falsetto is due to his vocal chords being unusually small, not his balls. I'm sure his balls are bigger than yours. Muse – Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever) Lyrics 15 years ago
One thing I've got to tell all of you who are under the delusion that Muse is doing songs like this for money and publicity:

MATT. BELLAMY. GENUINELY. LIKES. THE. TWILIGHT. SERIES.

He's said it on his website. Has a page dedicated to that. So chill out and quit hating on him.

Also, why the hell would MUSE (yes, the international rock sensation that is shaking the foundations of music and re-defining the word rock, with millions of fans around the globe) need to do a couple songs for a crappy pop-culture, teeny-bopper romance/horror film? Trust me, a band this amazing would not need to lean on something like Twilight, let alone the fact that they're GOOD GUYS AND THEY WOULDN'T.

So now, to address the "ugh, I don't like NSC because it's so soft and typical and wah, I'm just going to whine because Muse is going all soft and lovey-dovey and public". Give me a freaking break, people. Did you use your ears to listen to the Resistance, or was your head too far up your butt? I mean, really, MK Ultra? Hello, they're sticking with their roots.

Matt Bellamy recently went through a break-up with a girlfriend that he'd been in a long-term relationship with. Like, 8 years long-ish. That's a long time. I think that this song is just a summation about how he feels about having to end that, combined with a bit of that Twilight-love-story. This is a song purely about how love can feel for people. That feeling that you can shake the world, can do anything, you're more powerful than anyone because you have love. Bellamy has stated in interviews that he often uses celestial terms or the idea of space to convey ideas as big as love or power (just listen to Black Holes and Revelations) the same way that poets use the ocean as a similar kind of metaphor. So I think that this song is just his sort of release of his emotions regarding love. It's quite simple, really.

I keep having to say this: They make the music for themselves, not us. It's not selfish, it's just the way it is.

For me, this song is kind of a sort of mash-up of all of their work. Like, this is the kind of song that people will use as an example to roughly give people an idea of their music. I'm not saying it's their best work, because music is just feelings. And you can't have "best feelings". It just doesn't work.

I think you all could seriously benefit from wiping all that "Muse is going mainstream" crap from your mind and just letting them take you on a freaking journey. You can't tell them how to do their work. Their work is their mind, and you can't tell them to change their mind. They are individual and beautiful. Get over it.

Muse – Exogenesis: Symphony Part 2 (Cross-Pollination) Lyrics 15 years ago
Christ, don't any of you listen to Muse's interviews? The three-part symphony is a freaking story. The idea is simple: humans have destroyed earth (pollution, war, overpopulation, ect.) A select group of humans are sent to go find a new planet for humanity to home, a new place where they can "start it over again" and they'll "be good, this time we'll get it right". The song is a story about forgiveness and redemption. Not to mention the hauntingly beautiful vocals, whinngly fantastic guitar solos, classical piano peices, face-melting drums, killer bass and simply amazing structure of it all.

Matt Bellamy has created a complete masterpiece. What I would give to be inside that man's head.

Muse – Supermassive Black Hole Lyrics 15 years ago
First off:

"Ooh baby, can you hear me MOAN?"

Geez, no need to shy away from the slight sexuality of the song.

Anyway, this song is freaking amazing, complete with a fantastic dance beat, intense rock, a screaming guitar bit, and rad lyrics. Despite complaints that this song is too mainstream for Muse, I am totally pleased with it's song and it's individuality. Every song by Muse is so different from the other one, and just 'cause this one attracts flaky pop-listeners as well as devoted rock fans doesn't make it a bad song. And aside from that, you can't put a band in a box-- Muse (as a fantastically unique trio) do not have to make music that complies to their previous style. They make the music for themselves, not for you guys. They perform it for themselves as much as for us fans, so back off. They are beautiful people who create beautiful music.

Okay, done ranting.

The Postal Service – Brand New Colony Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so great! It makes me think of my relationship with a close friend of mine...

I feel that this song is about two people who care about each other so much, that they'll ALWAYS be there for one another-- whether that means romantically: "grapes fermented, bottled and pressed, in my finest suit, like a perfect gentleman" as a protector: "I'll be your winter coat...so you won't catch a cold" or just someone to listen: "I'll be the fire escape..."

The verses that begin with "I'll be the..." are referring to always being there for someone, whether they need a friend, a lover, a protector, a listener... Whatever it is they need, they'll be there.

Then, you get to the chorus, which is more complicated. The basic idea is that he wants to take her somewhere where it can just be them, no thinking about social acceptance or society-oriented ideas. He wants to be somewhere with her where it's just them. When he starts saying "brand new colony...We'll give ourselves new names," this is referring to that idea of escaping your past and starting over with one person. There are references towards the end of the chorus that indicate wanting to be somewhere in nature-- "sun will heat the ground under our bare feet,". And there's the phrase "kiss you on the mouth". Which speaks for itself.

All in all, I think that this song is a kind of subtle story about not only the story of two people, but just how they feel about each other. It begins very innocent, with just feeling that sense that you care about someone so much, you will be whatever they need and not worry about your own longings. Then, it progresses to wanting to be with only that person, wanting to kiss them. The whole idea of two young lovers escaping society for a life in the wilderness just by themselves-- "brand new colony" --is incredibly beautiful and innocent to me.

I think that the theme of escaping civilization for nature and wilderness is very prominent in all of Give Up (Postal Service album), but this way of integrating that idea into a song about a relationship is sweet. I also find the irony of it amusing-- you have an electronica band that relies entirely on technology for their music writing music about escaping technology and civilization for a more secluded life. Haha, irony's great.

Love this song!
