With many Jon McLaughlin songs, it helps to not take them literally if you're trying to understand what he's singing about! My first take was well off the mark after I heard his own commentary on this song. He wrote it from the perspective of a musician who's devoted to keeping his musical career alive, even though he hasn't achieved the commercial or critical success he had hoped for. Perhaps Mr. McLaughlin has dealt with that situation too? I definitely feel he's a talented musician who hasn't found the mainstream succeess that his music deserves. |

| The Black Angels – Young Men Dead Lyrics

This is a truly haunting song where the lyrics, singing and melodies create a mood that really makes you feel like you're in the middle of battle. The sense of fear and heightened awareness that a soldier must feel should be coming alive in the people who are listening to this song. It's like the classic 'Run Though the Jungle" but cranked up a notch or two.
The first verse seems to come from the perspective of the person ordering the young man into combat, while the last one reflects on the lingering emotional scars from the battle that just went down. The title "Young Men Dead" could also be taken to mean that while the subject of the song has survived, his innocence is gone and he's emotionally numb to everything he's experienced.
I don't think the song refers to any battle specifically, although it easily reminds me of scenes from Vietnam movies where soldiers are sneaking through the jungles and fields in the dead of night. I first heard it in the trailer for Person of Interest Season 4, and it seems very poignant for a show with the theme of constant warfare. |

| Sara Bareilles – December Lyrics

The lyrics to this song seemed awfully cryptic the first few times I listened to it. It makes more sense now when I think about the singer in a deep depression. The parts about "Distill a whole year down into a day" and the background vocals of "break the chain" are definitely about reliving a hurtful occurrence over and over, the cause for the depression.
The choice of "December" for the song title might be referencing "Summer is Over," Sara's duet with Jon McLaughlin. That song compares the end of a relationship to the Fall that comes after Summer, so I wouldn't be surprised if this song was also about the depression after a breakup. ("And I remember when you used to be mine...") |

| Ingrid Michaelson – This Is War Lyrics

This definitely sounds like a follow-up to "Soldier" from the Everybody album. A simple song about unrequited love that the singer won't give up on, with vivid imagery of battle. Ingrid Michaelson's gift is her knack for pretty and quirky songs about how love often sucks, and how many different ways she's found to express that. |

| Paramore – Part II Lyrics

As a sequel to "Let the Flames Begin" on "Riot," "Part II" takes the subtle Christian subtext of the former song and makes it even more explicit. "Dancing all alone to the sound of an enemy's song// I'll be lost until you find me" reflects on the seductive nature of the secular world, and the deliverance from it which only comes from submitting to God's call and allowing him into the singer's life.
The song may be referring to a specific event in the lives of a band member or member(s,) but the important subtext is that it's a prayer for God's intercession in the singer's life. It's hard to ignore that in any song that talks of brokenness, glory, mercy and forgiveness. "What a mess, what a mystery we've made// Of love and other simple things// Learning to forgive// Even when it wasn't our mistake." That's the heart of Jesus's message on how to live our lives: unconditional love and forgiveness. |

The song isn't entirely clear about what's happening, just that the relationship it describes is definitely on the rocks. It sounds like the singers want to make things work, even though the situation is working against them. |
