Maybe It's Over Lyrics

All of the signs point,
and all of the voices inside your head
speaking the phrases coined by those who say things I've never said.

All of the cars drive,
on the other side,
and we're the only ones burning in their head lights.

Singing maybe it's over, but I don't feel it,
If we want it forever baby we gotta steal it.
I hold the last straw
With my back against the wall singing maybe it's over,
but I don't feel it at all.

Every night we lie awake,
love never asks for the time that she takes.
I can feel you slipping away,
we're falling through the holes and cracks from our mistakes.

We're singing maybe it's over, but I don't feel it,
If we want it forever, baby, we gotta steal it.
I hold the last straw
With my back against the wall singing maybe it's over,
but I don't feel it at all.

This love won't stop,
I'm lookin out for one more shot.
Don't tell me everything I've got is not enough (is not enough).
This love won't stop,
I'm lookin out for one more shot.
Don't tell me everything I've got is not enough.

We're singing maybe it's over but I don't feel it.
If we want it forever baby we gotta steal it.
I hold the last straw
With my back against the wall singing maybe it's over.
So maybe it's over.
But I don't feel it at all.
At all.

With many Jon McLaughlin songs, it helps to not take them literally if you're trying to understand what he's singing about! My first take was well off the mark after I heard his own commentary on this song. He wrote it from the perspective of a musician who's devoted to keeping his musical career alive, even though he hasn't achieved the commercial or critical success he had hoped for. Perhaps Mr. McLaughlin has dealt with that situation too? I definitely feel he's a talented musician who hasn't found the mainstream succeess that his music deserves.

The song isn't entirely clear about what's happening, just that the relationship it describes is definitely on the rocks. It sounds like the singers want to make things work, even though the situation is working against them.
