I disagree about it not being about hate. "H8" All great interpretations above. My interpretation is that he/they are comparing himself to a machine, which doesn't have a heart. "I know you want me to feel your pain" indicates that someone is suffering and he just can't have empathy. "We'll destroy this world for you" indicates that others are being brought into it but the goal is to destroy the other person.
I think this is about a person/people who are very good at expressing their (H)ATE to others. Peace is meaningless to them because then they wouldn't be able to keep tormenting/torturing (dirty tricks/twisted games) which is their objective. Peace would make their lives meaningless since they have been defined by being cold and destructive.
In gaining some perspective he sees he is getting something out of what he is doing (the torment) it helps him to be able to exist in a cold environment. "helps me to co-exist with the chill" The "space dementia" refers to the total isolation he feels from the human race when he is acting out these behaviors. |

This song reminds me of the recent events in the news with a girl getting bullied. I think it is also a reflection of our culture in many ways and doesn't need to just pertain to kids. The sad thing is allegedly some girl died because of bullying recently. I won't say her name but you can look in the news. They hunted her down in school, they pursued her mercilessly on the internet, and everywhere she turned there was an insult of some kind aimed at her either directly or indirectly. It was said that allegedly her bullies and also the articles called them stalkers were to have said on a social networking site that they were happy that she was dead. Maybe it was their goal to get rid of her anyway? If you can imagine such a possibility of animalistic cruelty. It makes me angry that our society no longer values the rights of an individual and it has become a "Lord of the Flies" free for all. Allegedly the people involved were overheard at a party joking about how they lied to the police. Who really knows what occurred? Obviously something hideous and indecent. Its a sad indication of what is going on in our society today. Realistically though, this form of harrassment can happen to anyone. It can spiral out of control because there are people in this world who have that same vicious mentality. They are angry and wish to take it out on others. I think of her as being the strong one and not her alleged attackers. It takes a huge amount of courage to go through something like that even for one day, let alone the several months that she supposedly suffered through. It is an afflication that most of us can't even begin to imagine. Its sad to think what she could have done with her life, had a family and children of her own some day. We all have families that we love and care about and its sad we can't treat others with the same kindness and decency that we would our own. Someday our children will be out in the world and if we don't lead by example on how to treat others than there is no hope for our society. |

I feel like he is speaking to this woman about how he thinks she is worth nothing and he refuses to validate her as a person no matter what goodness she possesses or no matter what she does to try to be a good person. In validating, I mean not abusing her and just letting her be. She is "praying for shelter" (when you pray for shelter it is from the storm which is a metaphor for bad things affecting your life) and he is basically saying forget it "protection doesn't exist" of course not from him or anyone she knows. Her life has become extremely difficult for her because of this. She only wants to be a good person and live a clean life. He and everyone else thinks that they know things about her (not really understanding her though) so therefore he takes full advantage and thus she is the "prey". The lyrics being kind of vague but it brings a scenario to mind, I might be wrong ... and so I see my explanation is longer than the lyrics themselves ; ) |

I always thought Steppenwolf was Stevenwolf. Don't know why. Just totally out of proportion which goes with the territory. When I hear this I picture the earpieces that some people walk around with. I know this guy who is big into listening devices. That is what this song reminds me of. Him and his three friends who are playing at war. Too much time on their hands and way too nasty. |

Someone has apologized. The singer is also at fault but seems to be wanting the other person to not only apologize but to do everything to repair a rift and therefore is not wanting true peace. It is a controlling song. The singer wants the person to be backed into a corner because of things the singer is doing to the person and he enjoys watching the person grovel? I dunno but that is what I am getting out of it. The balance of power seems a bit skewed. |

This is a beautiful song with strong religous overtones. I think he is talking about introspection of his journey and now being in limbo. I think it indicates a certain weariness of the world. He is considering death and the forgiveness of his sins "sweet rain of forgiveness" such as in baptism. Walking away from anger, pain and sorrow and finally stopping and getting to the place when he is facing up to all of it. Walking in his grace is the forgiveness and mercy that is bestowed upon him and he feels as if he can finally rest. The "walking in his footsteps" lyric reminds me of the song by the Police with the same name. That song is basically about how the mighty can fall and how in your dominance you can become extinct. It also means that he will now try to follow a path of goodness because he has felt that grace and mercy. |

This is about someone who maybe said some negative things they shouldn't have said and is sorry for any pain they caused to whomever was listening. The singer is saying they can't go back and change what has happened and that is why the "goodbye". I think the singer has changed and regrets their actions though "Drowning I've been blind But I've opened up my eyes"
Perhaps they tried to apologize before and the person didn't accept it and was trying to make them suffer. "And today's the hand of an angel You were not the kind to believe" The person didn't believe in the singer's goodness but the singer is basically a good person.
"Today's a time for forgiveness You were never that good to me" whomever (person or persons) the singer needs to forgive has been even more cruel and the singer has been trying to get past that.
"Today the past is a freak" I interpret this as what ever has happened in the past was very crazy and dramatic. Today the singer is willing to move on by living in the moment and trying to be a better person.
I'm not assuming its a love song though.

These lyrics are interesting. No hope and no faith is pathetic. You have to have hope and faith in others. Otherwise people become unredeemable. Then of course it gives you the excuse to crucify them and that makes everyone concerned feel so much better doesn't it? I think taking time for all the wrong things sometimes has to be done if your being persecuted. |

I think these lyrics indicate that people who use guilt, pain and shame in order to abuse a person and to get them to agree with their opinions can never really get their message across in a meaningful way. The singer wants to be positive about life. Most of the time the people who say they have it all figured out have been damaged and guilty themselves. For example failing marriages, second marriages, addictions, lacking integrity in their dealings with others, etc. So what this is really about is judgement (perhaps religion perhaps not) and the singer isn't judging others because he is basically saying we are all damaged in some way. So why be hurtful to others? |

I don't think Roxc has the right meaning at all. While I can't be as eloquent as those who have posted before me, I think its simply saying whatever your grudges may be you can still return to the innocence of a child if you let them go. That you need to consider, whatever your reasons are for the grudge MAY NOT TRULY EXIST.
While much is written about Saturn in mythology & astrology, Saturn being the Roman god of justice: "Saturn (justice) ascends Comes round again" "Ignorant to The damage done" and in Roman times the feast of Saturnalia indicates the "settling of accounts". That the damage of your grudge may already far outweigh the cause of the grudge itself and what must be done to settle the accounts? What must be done for you to move on from this?
I agree with reckless that grudges cause suffering to yourself as sometimes a grudge can consume you and change you for the worse. Letting the past GO and moving on can only benefit you in countless ways you may not be able to determine now.
As this grudge is now part of your identity " transmutate this cold and fated anchor" changing will take courage. "Terrified of being wrong" Can't accept the fact that you may be wrong because it has shaped your actions. |

I think this is a play on three definitions.
Intension: a property or quality connotated by a word or phrase or other symbol.
Intention: determined to act in a certain way.
In tension: inner striving and unrest a state of latent hostility.
If when the song is being played backwards it is saying these things (and I haven't tried that) the reversal of the lyrics is the hypocrisy. "Pure as we begin.Here we have a stone. Thrown this day the stranger. Swore to crush his bones." NOT the opposite: "Work hard, Stay in school, Listen to your mother, your father is right/rising/right, son... Jesus loves you... Work hard, Stay in school, Listen to your mother, your father is right/rising/right son...)"

So you are either crushing someone -a child- by your actions but on the surface you have to show how you are supporting the child and their family? That is what this song means to me.

Words means nothing sometimes when you are considering the source of them (a liar, manipulator, someone with an ulterior motive). He is saying the poets, priests and politicians of the world use words to do these things and move the masses to their will. The singer doesn't want to use words in this way, he rather speak meaningless babble than to be insincere. "Their innocence will pull me through" In being inarticulate he is innocent unlike the persons he mentioned in power that have an agenda. It is intrinsically a song about corruption. |
