Armored Saint – Burning Question Lyrics
|
If I had to guess (and this is just my interpretation), it's definitely about a girl. I think what's going on here is that the guy is going crazy because of something he's not sure about in the relationship. My initial thought is that the question is "Does she love me?", but I'm honestly not sure./ |

Anthrax – C11H17N202SNA (Sodium Pentathol) Lyrics
| 13 years ago
|
Bobby is definitely on the right track here. However, I think specifically this song is about religious leaders that spread lies and deceit to retain power.
There are certain repeated lines in the song that I think point to this. First of all, all the language in the song makes it obvious this is about someone that (a) lies and (b) has power. Sodium pentathol, by the way, is a anesthesia most notably used in interrogations. It's sometimes called "truth serum".
There are several lines though that also point towards religion.
"To all the lost souls you've grabbed" Saving "lost souls" is a common theme in many religions, mostly Christianity.
"A mass delusion, mass delusion" Religion is often called a mass delusion.
"I can't drink from the cup" This reminds me of two things. First, the wine used in Christian communion. Second, the Jonestown massacre in which people drank poisoned Kool-Aid. Both involve liquid and run with the theme of control through deceit.
"..and your faith is tired" Obviously, faith is a common tool of religions.
"Where is truth in the trinity?" The Trinity being a central aspect of Christianity, this could easily be a questioning of the truth of religion here.
Finally, "An imitation of life buried in theology" I can't think of anything other than religion that involves theology.
I'm somewhat leaning towards this being specifically about the Pope and the atrocities he's committed, but that's just my theory. And admittedly, I am pretty anti-theistic, and am therefore more disposed towards these interpretations than most people, so there you go.

Anthrax – Packaged Rebellion Lyrics
|
I think this song is obviously about posers who try to seem like rebels but are really cowards that are afraid to take any action. In this case, the title means something like "Your rebellion is just a facade that you sell to people". It's fake and has no real worth. It's just a product. Like the Tea Party movement, considering how much money it's gotten from the Koch Brothers. |

Muse – Thoughts of a Dying Atheist Lyrics

What I dread most is a maze that somebody promised me has candy at the center, but is instead a lion. I would rather die and stay that way than serve a tyrant in heaven.

Free – All Right Now Lyrics

This song was written in like ten minutes after a concert when the band members noticed that barely anybody had clapped for them because their songs were all so mellow.
The song is about a dude that picks up a girl on the street and takes her home for sex |

The Exies – Kickout Lyrics
|
Actually, the Exies was short for Existentialists, but they were a sect of Beatles fans. I don't think it has any reference to religion. More likely, the song is about a guy who feels like his girl is controlling him, and so he's breaking up with her to save himself from a horrible future. |

Dream Theater – Misunderstood Lyrics

I completely agree. I kind of had that thought when I first heard the song. I wonder if perhaps the song was written to reflect a more human Jesus, a more historical Jesus, what his final thoughts might have been in actuality. |

The Doobie Brothers – Without You Lyrics

Not too complicated, but a great song nonetheless. About a guy who's begging his woman to come back to him (like so many rock songs seem to be about). |

Desert Sessions – Holey Dime Lyrics
|
I think maybe it's about how some people just can't seem to get a break, no matter what opportunities they might SEEM to have. I think the phrase "holey dime" means something of apparent value with no real value. An empty opportunity.
I think it also could be about people that can't seem to see any worth in life. In that case "holey dime" would mean something more like "valuable to others, but no value to me". That could also explain some of the self-hatred themes like "A plan that disappears in smoke/You deserve it". Like, the person feels that their miserableness is their fault. |

Iron Maiden – Sanctuary Lyrics

Actually, there were no attempts to ban this by anybody. I'll let Derek Riggs explain:
"The 'flak'... was invented by the band's management. They 'banned' it and they put the black square over her face and then they showed it to the press and cried 'censorship,' but there really wasn't any. The flak was all imaginary and self-generated for publicity. It's an old trick and it nearly always sells records... go and ask all the rappers who swear on their records all the time, if it depressed the record sales they would soon stop doing it."

Iggy Pop – Search And Destroy Lyrics
|
I think for the most part the song's simply about Iggy's partying behavior. The name was taken from a Time article about the Vietnam War, and you can see references to the war in the lyrics, like "heart full of napalm", "runaway son of the nuclear a-bomb", "Soul radiation in the dead of night", and "Love in the middle of a firefight" |

The Hives – Try It Again Lyrics

What I think he's saying is he's talking to a girl who keeps getting rejected, and he's saying "Don't give up, keep trying", and maybe he's suggesting she try a different approach. |

Cheap Trick – Tonight It's You Lyrics

I know. Great song. Definitely one of my favorite Cheap Trick songs. The loving mood in the beginning mixed with the high energy of the chorus, it reminds me of a more energized, less sulky version of The Flame (which is also very good). |

Annihilator – No Zone Lyrics
|
I think I've got this one pretty much figured out. It seems to me to be about global warming, told from the perspective of Mother Nature.
The numerous lines about "burning me up" seem to be referencing to the increasing temperature. They mention the ozone. No Zone seems to be a pun on Ozone, saying there isn't going to be any ozone left if we keep going like this. Global suicide is pretty obvious.

Cheap Trick – Stop This Game Lyrics
|
I think the song is talking about wanting to get rid of some aspect of their life that they've gotten really sick of. They had the chance to stop it before, and didn't, and now they're paying the price. "The music" is that thing that the singer seems to desire to end. He may be referencing to a relationship, as indicated by the 4th and 6th stanzas. |

Cage the Elephant – Back Stabbin' Betty Lyrics

My favorite song on the album. I love the lyricism, how it takes the old musical trope of "my girlfriend sucks" and makes it interesting, and the riffs, which sound to me a like a grungy Led Zeppelin sound. |

Black Sabbath – Children Of The Grave Lyrics

I think Mages is right that the song is about the Cold War. Several of the lines reek of Cold War era wondering of when the war would end. It seems to take the stance that if we don't do something today we'll all be royally screwed. However, I think the song could easily be adapted to just show that, in general, we have to do something if we ant the world to be a better place. |
