It just struck me... I've seen some the the theories as to the true meaning of this song... Some very interesting ideas... I don't know if someone has already mentioned the points i'm about to mention, but i think it sounds pretty logical...
The title "Knights of Cydonia" itself is a huge clue... It seems to be a direct reference to the illuminati and freemasonry... Those who belong to these secret societies are ranked with different degrees... Some are given titles like the "Knight of Malta" or the "Knight of Eulogia"... So that's the "Knight" part... What about "Cydonia"? ... Well cydonia is a place on mars which is said to occupy pyramid like shaped objects on the surface... Pyramids are very closely linked with freemasonry... So i guess Matthew was just trying to be indirect, yet direct at the same time with his title...
"When fools can be kings"... I loved that line!... I think it's a direct line referring to George Bush... A complete imbecile... How would someone like him became president? ... A few easy steps... One of which is, join the illuminati...
Matthew seems to have written many songs about political conspiricies... I think the whole "resistance" album is based on the same foundation... Mk ultra is a classic example...
The rest of the song is pretty simple and straightforward... Basically all he is saying is revolt!... Pretty much the same as Green Day's "Know your Enemy" track... We must fight to survive... Overthrow the government... At least mentally... Physically that may be impossible, or maybe not... But in reality, the governments have got every living creature in bonds and chains... We need liberation and right to freedom from this corrupt pyramid like scheme which only truly benefits those on top and not at the bottom... A world where child labour in china is supported by americ and even funded... Injustice has to end. But who can stop it?... |

Personaly, i don't see the harm in allowing other established music styles to influence theirs, especialy when they make it their own, and do a heck of a great job at it. Queen is a legend, they've had the greatest musical influence on countless genres worldwide... Absorbing other influences is a way of tributing to those artists, deeming them worthy of reviving the style, and also helps them find their way closer to their own original and unique style... |

I haven't had much time to go through all the comments, but i must say, i've read a few good interpretations... I think the comment added JoeEllis1026 is quite similar to my line of thought... So i'm just going to add a few details that i think are relevant...
I'm going to make reference to the two most frequently uttered statements
Firstly... The term "natural selection" itself refers to the process by which life came into existence.... A random process, which is the backbone of the theory of evolution.... So naming the song "Unnatural Selection" is in defiance therefore of Darwinism, or the theory of evolution itself.... Hence the phrase "It's unnatural selection, i want the truth"
What he's trying to say is that the evidence and the facts of life point towards a greater meaning in terms of the source of life, at least one greater than the current theory of evolution.
The second most prominent phrase in this song is "we're not droplets in the ocean"
Of course, this can have broad meaning, but without looking too hard, we can see that it quite closely links to the whole evolution theme as well... According to the theory of evolution, all life originated from the ocean, and life started out as simple single celled organisms, hence the term "droplets"... So When he says "we're not droplets in the ocean", he's basicaly emphasizing the same point made in the title phrase itself... Evolution is untrue, and intellectually unsatisfying...
Further thoughts on what i've mentioned would be welcomed... :) |

I just thought it would be timely to add that in original english . . . That which was used in shakespearian times . . . The phrase 'to top' . . . Usually referred to sexual intercourse . . . In over words the climax or . . . . You guessed it . . . Orgasm . . . |

Gee . . . Look at the number of comments . . . . This totally beat the crap out of robert plant's stairway to heaven . . . Awesome . . . Green day has officially succeeded in global domination . . . Awesome . . . . I guess it's their lack of what other people think about what you think that makes them quite unique . . . In that they fear nothing when it comes to expressing a feeling or opinion . . . For this fact they are a highly respected band . . . Their songs are not written to simply sell albums . . . As many contemporary artists do . . . . However they are fulfilling their responsibities as musicians in the true sense . . . By making music to tell the world who they are and what they stand for . . . . Not many artists today have that kind of reputation . . . This is also clearly seen in the number of different side projects that billie joe has as well . . . Like pinhead gunpowder, foxboro hottubs, the network . . . Just to name a few . . . Which have not been commercially endorsed . . . But just not there for the sake of real music . . . May they forever continue upholding their truly legendary legacy . . . |

I totally feel your pain rog . . . . The guitar work is brilliant though . . . And it contains a really moving solo towards the end . . . Roberts vocals are really powerful . . . I guess this makes up for the lack of sense within the lyrics . . . . |

Well thanks dmon . . . However from my perspective this song has much greater meaning . . . Besides the fact that it is the description of the bands nocturnal life . . . From my point of view it is the description of a person who has lost all forms of hope . . . due to bitter experiences in his or her personal life and has now vented their bitterness to the very source of comfort . . . A very common mistake that we humans tend to make out of senselessness and ignorance . . . The sun . . Represents any form of enlightenment . . . Especially spiritual . . . The source of truth and energy . . . Hiding from the sun is symbolic of rejecting the path of spirituality due to growing cold towards it . . . This is a reaction found in many people today . . . And they cannot be blamed for this either . . . . Ancient prophecies and dead promises are symbolic of the hopes laid out by many spirital beliefs . . . Yet these are rejected due to personal experiences proving the 'senselessness' in believing them . . . |

Just to substantiate . . . 'i don't want to live in the modern world' is alot like 'i wanna be the minority and i don't need your authority' . . . And 'i can here the sound of a beating heart . . . ' is similar to 'blinded by the silence of a thousand broken hearts . . . ' 'the last of the rebels without a common ground' and 'i pledge allegiance to the underworld . . . There of which i stand alone' . . . |

I think that the safest bet woul be that the milk man is an independant entity . . . However i still feel that the boyfriend being the milk man theory seems to be the most intrigueing . . . To the person who substantiated this argument in numerical order . . . I agree with all statements other than the fifth one . . . In my opinion . . the boy had the milk mans hat . . Either because his father . . . The boyfriend . . . Had given it to him . . Or because the boyfriend had dropped it outside or something . . . The boy had a bottle of gin most likely because the boyfriend had finished work early or something and asked his son to buy it for him . . . A common practice with alcoholic parents . . . Now that the milk man or boyfriend is dead . . . The ending to the story will never be known . . . Which is why no one knows the end . . . The greatest climax ever . . . |
