Cool to see a lot of mine overlaps. Wrote this for a paper just now. Rock on Crows/fans. This song speaks wonders to me. It indirectly confronts the fear of wasting life on a monotonous, everyday job, as paralleled by the various descriptions of setting up a mill–a factory, essentially a machine–in a town in “Middle America.” Each verse advances these steps of constructing a mill, almost lamenting on the process of carrying out a strenuous task in order to begin the same cycle of production over and over again. The chorus echoes sentiments concerning this fear, with the feeling that the “heart” matters more than the “heart of matters” (the mill and life), showing a lack of connection between the speaker and society–detachment. As evidenced in the chorus, the speaker feels that the spectator (listener) should go somewhere else, because there is nothing of worth to be seen by his accomplishments–“turn your ticket in and get your money back at the door.” As each verse compounds on the previous one with the building of a mill, so is the idiom “turn a new leaf over” expanded to cover various topics. In the first verse the speaker feels that he is doing what others before him have done countless times, as he “tear[s] the old man down” so he can feel that he is on the forefront of his occupation. When he rolls a new leaf over, he is actually not doing anything of the sort, just repeating history; likewise, when he says to “roll a new life over,” he is doing the same. The speaker also feels that he is failing with relationships, when he “turns [his] girl into the ground” and “roll[s] a new love over.” Other themes are present in this song, such as the theme of inferiority and fear of trying. This is exemplified through the repetition of the speaker fearing old and young men “walk[ing] all over [him].” He feels that no matter what he does, he will still be outdone by others that are seemingly “walk[ing] on water.” This also is a reference to God, and the speaker feeling inferior to him. This recurring use of water and rain is transformed in the third verse with the line “come up through the summer rain,” signifying an epiphany, a redemption of sorts that is later finished at the end of the song. There, the speaker concedes his fight with life and his conflicts, and accepts his fate–coming home, accepting his ordeal. |

| Why? – By Torpedo or Crohn's Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Love these lyrics. Yoni seems very real. I can relate to a lot of this. The EP is called "Alopecia," which is a disease where your hair falls out (leaving you with none). I know someone who has it. Anyway, I figured maybe the whole wig thing was the concept of alopecia- his hair literally falling out because he doesn't know who he is and all these things he's dealing with...it's pretty poetic. Didn't know he has Crohn's. Sucks. When I was listening to this song I picked up on the hair/wig thing, and it just seemed to be where the ep gets its name from...Idk though. |

I think this song is about taking the easy, everyday, cliche (sorry to use "cliche) life, when one might have dreams or plans to something bigger than where he's at. the singer is advising/questioning someone whether or not they're going to take that leap or step. anyone agree? i can see the relationship thing too, but this is more applicable for me. awesome song. |

| Lupe Fiasco – Hello/Goodbye (Uncool) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
The Japanese interpretation is very eye-opening. I disagree about the Katrina, No Child Left Behind, etc. one but hey your opinion, more power to you. It could be about his Dad/Chilly, etc. I take it to mean more of the Cool's death...and a personal meaning for me too. Addressing death, the afterlife. Oblivion meaning the end of his life. He's saying (IMO) "hello (death), hello (afterlife), hello (not living), hello (not living) all the time, hello (not being anywhere), hello oblivion, hello (to the end)." First verse reminds me of the cool, etc. Hip hop, etc. If only songs like this had 10 amazing verses. Oh well, Lupe! Simple (AMAZING) lyrics, and so wide open for a myriad of interpretation. Rock on Lupe! Please don't get arrogant, dude! I like the hello, goodbye part...it's a little cliche these days but he brought some beastly spin on it. SONG IS AWESOME! |

| Lupe Fiasco – Real Recognize Real (The Pillz) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is so amazing. So much room for interpretation! Sorry for not commenting about the meaning...I wanna know where you can get it. Is it on a mixtape? Which one? please email me. mitchelldawkins@gmail.com thanks. | |
| Lupe Fiasco – The National Anthem Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This is the best song on Enemy of the State IMO. It's too bad most of the songs are so short, but I guess that's why it's just a mixtape. Lasers should be SICK. I think this is the best song not only because it's the longest (you really can't argue quality based on length) but also because it's the best lyrically (rosa part/school part). | |
| Red Hot Chili Peppers – Wet Sand Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| somebody please tell me it's "farm" in the wet sand. this song is amazing! complex lyrically and structurally. yay! | |
| Black Star – Definition Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Overall it's hard to pick one meaning for the song...but yeah, there's some biggie/tupac in here. Kweli references Cyrano...how is that crap? They define themselves in the rap as not being cliche, everday. Some great lines in here. Black star needs to make more stuff! | |
| Talib Kweli – Get By Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I wish he had like 4 more verses on this. I love this guy. Actually rappin about real stuff. Interesting song. Meaning: the questioning of why live to just get by, why live for a desk job...cliche...idk. but cool rapper! | |
| Taking Back Sunday – New Again (That Is Quite Enough) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Well, as I was saying... I think it's a possibility he's addressing negativity/himself with "my dear what long arms you have, all the better to hold you down." also with the long arms thing...if he's talking about negativity, it's saying how it has invaded everything. "Deep roots"--same thing, how it is so pervasive in his life. The family tree could be his family talking to him, etc. it was making sense earlier. I don't feel like thinking about it right now. The whole "my dear" thing is pretty cool if he is indeed talking to himself in an objective manner, and the whole tricky perspective of it is really cool. Ima try it out in some writing. Regardless of whether or not I'm right, it's a fresh look on the song, if anything. Rock on TBS! |

Alright...no on the title. It's just "New Again." Thanks for the lyrical update. Any way that we can fix the title and posted lyrics? Now, yesterday, I had a pretty shitty day overall. Pretty negative, depressed, just bad. When I woke up for some reason I wasn't feeling so bad, and I considered trying to be positive. Not sure if I'll get outta this mindset, but maybe I will. Anyway, about this song: It's a good song overall, on a good album too, the whole album's grown on me. This and "Sink Into Me" are both good songs, but to me they were "skip-overs" because I don't like listening to them over and over and over and over when there are better ones by TBS to hear. SOOOO, today, when I got in my car, I coincidentally had New Again (CD) in my car, and "New Again" came on, opening me up to a whole new meaning with my mindset and all. Sadly, I haven't written this much on any other TBS song. :( Now, as to the "new" meaning that I got from it--at first (a long time ago) I figured it was about having a new relationship...etc. Now I'm kinda thinking otherwise, though I'm not saying it doesn't apply. I think he might be addressing negativity. I'll respond more later I gotta go. Lol this is....sad that I wrote so much and now I don't have time. Sorry. |

| Envy on the Coast – Starving Your Friends Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| look. this song is AWESOME! I relate to it, and the whole meaning I've derived from it. However, look, please don't get mad or anything...just wondering, isn't the "windows" part kinda counter-intuitive saying that they block out everything? | |
| Dave Matthews Band – #27 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| hey, on a side note kinda unrelated to this song. Sorry...but is there any reason that some of his songs are called "#___?" Thanks. I love DMB. | |
| Coldplay – 42 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| 42 might be his age (easy to google) or the whole hitchiker's thing is applicable too....anyway ima do this later peace. | |
| Counting Crows – A Long December Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| dude can you email me that or something? mitchelldawkins@gmail.com that is the culmination of two of my favorite bands....just wow. | |
| Ben Folds Five – Where's Summer B.? Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Well...I really doubt that anyone will ever read this for a while. :( Probably isn't a huge songmeanings song...BUT, I really want someone to respond to this. So, reader, whoever ye may be, please make an account or login and respond to this dude! Anyway, I had no clue that this was so specific (The summer part) though I figured the names were all from their/his/his (Darren/Ben/BF5) town, BUT i figured Summer could be a symbol for youth. Like he's reminiscing almost. It COULD be a pun, for all those dogmatic ppl that say that one side or the other is TOTALLY wrong. But yeah, I think the whole summer being youth/younger days is applicable. Kinda ruins my day that Summer B. is a girl. :( Rock on Ben Folds Five/Ben Folds (Yeah, I'm biased, no WAY biased towards Ben) forever. |
