It's strangely erotic whilst maintaining that folksy, barely off-timed beat and seemingly nonsensical lyrics structure that is familiar to their listeners. I'd venture that it's one of their only songs that could be classified as "sexy". To me it's not only sexy and erotic, but it's also moving and sweet; it's like he loves this person so much that simply being around them is not enough - he actually wants to be a part of them. Just in case my lyric revisions don't get accepted, here are the actual lyrics of the first verse: "You used to dangle my heart with your puppet strings You dangled your desires right in front of my face You led me to the well but wouldn't let me drink" There are a few other mistakes, but you can figure it out. Anyway, this is my favorite song of the trilogy and has become one of my top ten favorite Green Day jams PERIOD. I knew a girl like this - not a romantic relationship, but a long and tumultuous friendship that I should have ended years before I did - and these lyrics hit me hard every time. "Back when I loved you but you're scaring me to death This careless memory and now I could care less" ^ I love this line because it reflects how I distanced myself from this person, but am still afraid I'll hear about her self-destructive ways finally getting the best of her, while still knowing there's nothing I can do. I think this is the darkest song on the 3 albums musically, which is part of what draws me to it, but the lyrics really shine. I wasn't as impressed with the lyrics on the trilogy as I have been in Green Day albums past, but this track makes up for it. |

Before I got pissed off, my comment was gonna be about how I usually think it's stupid and butchering the original song when rappers sample classic songs (I'm talking to you, Puff Daddy, or P. Diddy, or whatever the fuck your name is), but I really love the way they did this. | I heard the Santana version of this on The Long Kiss Goodnight, and then the Malcolm McLaren version on Kill Bill Vol. 2, but I think this original is my favorite - which is saying a hell of a lot because I love those first two versions I mentioned. I love how they used it in those movies; both centered around ass-kicking, fucked-in-the-head female protagonists (but also antagonists in some ways), which is how I like to think of these lyrics when I listen to the song. It's like this woman he's singing about came into his life and made things better in many ways, but also worse, and she eventually left him shattered, only to write these bitter lyrics. That's another reason I love this song - the beat/music is very poppy and radio-friendly, but the lyrics are dark and even sad. Songs that can accomplish that the way this song does evoke very twisted mixed feelings: you wanna dance and sing along with it, but you want to break something at the same time. | |

I LOVE this song. Heard it for years while playing Tony Hawk's Underground, then bought the album when I got old enough to realise how much I loved the song. I love that the line "This is the city that'll make all your dreams come true" comes right after the rap part about drugs and violence. That speaks to me like this: sometimes, no matter how many horrible qualities a person/place has, some people are so attracted by the superficial things that they become narrow sighted, and fail to see the big bloody picture; and what's inside is ALWAYS more important than what appears on the surface. P.S. - I agree 100% that the last lines were written about Tim's then-wife Brody Armstrong. Or Dalle. Or Homme now, I don't know. |

This is quite possibly my favorite Nirvana song. I think Kurt could probably relate to Farmer in many ways. She felt disenfranchised and cast out from "normal" society because her eccentricities were too much for most to handle, which lead to mental illness in the form of deep depression - much like Kurt. The similarities end here, I think. Frances Farmer died of cancer much later in life than at 27, which was the age Cobain ultimately ended his pain. I think this song and many others on the album ("In Utero", their third and last studio album which Kurt initially wanted to call "I Hate Myself and Want to Die") dripped of Kurt's confusion and discontent and showcased his sadness through both the music and lyrics. So many things he wrote - and even pictures he took - foreshadowed his suicide that I don't understand how anyone could have been shocked when he pulled the trigger. |

I think by a large part Shirley wrote it about the band's groupies. "I must be made out of concrete/I sign my name across your chest//Give out the same old answers..." - a lot of fans are so immersed in the music and obsessed with the band members that they don't look at them as people. Maybe she's sick of being looked at as nothing more than a sex object by many people and "giving out the same old answers" to television hosts and crazy fans. "When did I get perverted? I can't remember your name/I'm growing introverted, you touch my hand but it's not the same//This was so unexpected, I never thought I'd get caught..." - this could be saying that she loved the fame and was very outgoing to everyone in the beginning, but it's become tedious or is going too fast. Or she could be dealing with either her or her bandmates using some of the groupies, or thinking about it, so she feels perverted and doesn't want to make physical contact with anyone. "You should be sleepin', my love/Tell me what you're dreamin' of" - I don't get this, but it's possibly my favorite part of any Garbage song; especially when the music picks back up and her voice is overdubbed. It's so soothing and creepy at the same time. "I knew you were mine for the taking when I walked in the room/your eyes light up when I walk in the room" - she could either be talking to the many fans in the crowds at their shows or a man that she wants or has. This is pretty self explanatory. The rest of the song is a bunch of metaphors sang in a very threatening, low and at times, growling manner. I don't understand the lyrics, but I know it sounds cool. |

So many religious references here. The whole song sounds like a cult chant or mantra, and there are many obvious references to those things: "Burn down all your idols/Destroy your idols" - the very first line is obviously religious, suggesting some kind of chaos or even an apocalyptic scenario. Also sang in a chanting manner, with Shirley twice repeating "your idols". "It's helter skelter/It's not a dream" - the term "helter skelter" means "disorderly haste or confusion"; it's also a rough song by the Beatles, believed by Charles Manson (another cult reference) to have predicted an apocalyptic war between racist whites and non-whites. "Come down from the altar/Remove your blindfold/What do you see?" - maybe telling the blind followers of organized religion to open their minds and eyes to the actions of the church, and how they're contradictory to the Bible and the morals they teach. "Hare hare krishna/Was that your sister/A cover girl//A wasted primadonna/She lost her way here/She disappeared" - the Hare Krishna mantra, supposed to open the mind and achieve a higher conciousness; I like how she repeats "hare", like she's chanting. Also, the "wasted primadonna" part could be a Charles Manson reference (echoing the "helter skelter" lyric in the beginning), seeing as his cult murdered an actress. The Hare Krishna mantra was confused with the hippie culture of the '60s, the time the Manson cult was active, so the cult references seem to loosely tie together here. You also have to notice Shirley and Charles share the surname "Manson". Hmmm... "Come back to your altar/Build a fire" - burn the church? "Kill the new religion.../A televised confession.../It's all new lies", "Miscommunication/Misinformation/A perfect waste"- now the word "religion" is blatantly used, and not in a nice way. The "televised confession" makes me think televangelists, and how they use their influence and power to get money. They keep twisting the words of the Bible to their own advantage - "all new lies". The "Miscommunication" lyrics seem to repeat this thought. "Bite the sacred apple/And suck the poison/Enjoy the taste" - In the bible, Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and were doomed to death. This seems to be from an atheist's point of view, telling someone to live their life and enjoy it instead of depriving themselves for the sake of a higher being, which the atheist believes does not exist. But she sings it sort of mockingly, which makes me think it's kind of a backwards attack, telling the religious person(s) to just screw off. And then we have the chorus: "You're going down, down, down/How low can you go?" - I think that's self explanatory after all this. Maybe I'm way off, but just the way it's sang with such venom suggests something awful has happened or is imminent. I think the last verse is a good summary of the idea of the song: "Bite the sacred apple/And suck the poison/Enjoy the taste". I love this song. |
