Madonna – Live To Tell Lyrics 12 years ago
"the light that you could never see" - I agree that the song is probably about abuse. I think this line is referring to the inability of a psychopath to see and feel the ways that normal humans can; the warm light. It's basically saying "you can try to take all you can from me, but in the end, I'll still be more human than you."

Song is about dysfunctional families, amoral people; crab mentality. It's about how difficult it is to be original, or relatively successful, to the dismay of others with low self-esteem. It's about the disillusionment of young adulthood.

Rammstein – Amerika (English) Lyrics 12 years ago
lol this song/video makes me laugh. From the African kids sitting around a TV eating pizza, to the directions to to raise the flag on the moon, to the Indians dancing at the "this is not a love song" part.

I may be digging a bit deep, and it's just probably a reference to our "the Joneses keep up with me" attitude as a country (needing to be the first to the moon), but I can't help but think maybe Rammstein are moon landing conspiracy theorists that don't believe we made it to the moon; that it's sort of a false ego booster to improve morale?

It doesn't get more obvious than "Coca-Cola, sometimes war." I had to check to make sure, but this was written and released at the beginning of the Iraqi invasion. Coca-Cola = we're fat, lazy and ignorant, sometimes war = sarcastic reference to the ridiculous amounts of foreign engagements we've been in since WW2. We sit back enjoying our ice cold Coca-Cola and cheering on the ole' war(s) being fought to make the poor poorer, and the rich richer.

To those that questioned the significance of pinball, it's probably just a reference to our leisurely lifestyle; pinball was basically the predecessor to our video games and arcades. Cliffs: "let me see you stripped."

Rammstein – Mutter (English) Lyrics 12 years ago
lol, I don't think the lyrics are meant to be taken literally...just like most songs like this, ie. "Disarmed" by the Pumpkins. It's no secret that many famous rock musicians did so out of rebellion, especially of their parents. "I have no navel on my stomach?" Umm, a fetus would not survive without that. It is a figure of speech; the narrator is rejecting his mother. TBH, this almost sounds like an ode to psychopaths, as profound neglect, and some of the unhuman feelings/thoughts the narrator has, are essential.

As for the video, it is essentially the same as Metallica's "unforgiven" - an angsty song written about a musician's parents, involving a boy living inside of a concrete room, growing old, and dying. This is a guy living his life in a cage-like underground structure, no development whatsoever afforded to him by his selfish mother, and all he looks forward to in life is somebody bringing him a cup of water, so that he can barely sustain life physically. The part where he is sitting with his mouth open, suggests to me an unresolved oedipal/oral development stage, like, as the song alludes to, he is still waiting to be nurtured by his mother. The first thing I thought of, was baby birds in a nest, sitting with their mouths wide open when mom comes home with the worms for them to feed on...but the mother never comes with her worm. As for the "normal" version who brings the bald version food...it could be either interpreted as the "mother" giving his kid exactly what is minimally needed for the son to survive, ie. water, and then leaving him. Or, it could be what the writer perceives to be a normal version of himself, almost like those stories where somebody gets to see the alternate, "normal" version of themselves via an angel, or something.

Black Sabbath – Heaven And Hell Lyrics 13 years ago
Am I the only one who heard the beginning of the second part of the song as "the lover of life's now the sinner?" Maybe an exhibition of the cynical or nihilistic side of Dio? Or is that just my cynical disposition being projected into the song about metaethics?

My interpretation for this line was "if you follow the Bible to a T, the only love you will have left is for your God." In other words, like some have mentioned, religion teaches us to waste our life afraid of what the fool consider to be sins, and what the wise man considers to be relatively righteous enjoyments in life. The lover of life's now the sinner, as opposed to the man in the box, living a repressed life of very limited enjoyment.

Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics 13 years ago
Could also be "cause solid currency's the hardest to LAND" meaning she sold her love to a rich man, because earning the lifestyle she wanted the good old fashioned way was too hard. Think about it. How many people marry for money, especially mutually? Doesn't matter if it involves "marrying up," two poor people marrying equals more money in your life, period. It's why divorce rates always plummet in bad economies; the problems that are normally unacceptable in a marriage are now acceptable when financial ruin lies in divorce. This song could be about marrying for money, period, not just about something as extreme as Anna Nicole Smith's story. By the time you realize it, you've wasted your life with somebody whom you have a deficiency love for, kind of like a child with attachment issues loving another adult like they would their neglectful parents. It's just not the same.

Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics 13 years ago
I believe the lyrics are:

She sold her love to the modern man,
Cause solid currency's the hardest to lend,
All that money helps you cover your eyes,
Don't let the lady finger blow in your head.

Did it all,
For that dollar,
She's a star tonight,
Without warning,
She gave up the ghost inside.

Just like a whiskey bottle drained on the floor,
She got no future, just a lot to endure,
This gives some matter to shaking her hind,
Too late to leave him now, the sun's in her cup.

Give it all,
For that dollar,
She's a star tonight,
Without warning,
She gave up the ghost inside.

You call it chivalry, never pull a punch for free,
You ever wonder why they had to move on?
This phony article, that put you on the throne,
The dog is standing here, look where you are.

Chorus

Was it all for show

Don't know after this, have no idea.

That is my interpretation of the lyrics, wearing my trusty headphones. Jesus, these singers are hard to discern.

As for the song, I would like to think that the video plays a part in the song's meaning. I'm not sure if the "ghost" is a general term for your soul, but it could mean that the person was soulless to begin with, I'm not sure. It would seem that selling out is the issue here, and that the bright, alluring lights of fame and fortune are not quite what they seem; a mirage, for when and if you reach it, you will be alone, and empty. The girl in the video literally paid an arm and a leg to reach this fantastic destination, and her tunnel vision cost her her life, or her soul, or "ghost."

However, I think the general consensus of gold digging is the correct interpretation. The whole "too late to leave him" think seems to be the key point. The woman realizes, when her life is pretty much over, that she has led a shallow, unfulfilling life, and that it is too late to start over. She spent her entire life chasing the LB114 planet, and her life being drained away by gold-digging is shown by her giving up her body to obtain what she was after. Her entire life was the desolate desert that she discovers at the end of the video; the lavish "star" lifestyle was the mirage.

Disturbed – Indestructible Lyrics 13 years ago
This was my initial reaction. Then again I am bias by feeling that I'm Alive relates to me very well. I almost think this is an add-on to that great song. Maybe "war" refers to something more esoteric? I mean, how many songs these days are meant to be taken so literally that the true meaning is 100% obvious? Not very many at all. A lot of song writers compose songs that have two or more meanings; one that most people will relate to/interpret as, and also what the song really means to THEM.

Disturbed – I'm Alive Lyrics 13 years ago
Draiman is singing about what is basically his defeat of the "crab mentality" that is one of the lesser known, but definitely observable, dynamics of our society...and one of the more unfortunate at that.

The more I listen to this song, the more it makes sense... It's not too much of a stretch of the imagination that somewhere along the line, those that should be looking out for his best interests, and supporting him in his aspirations, didn't, simply because they couldn't stand to see him reach his potential. In case I have anybody lost, just rent October Sky, and observe the father and son's relationship through the first 90% of the movie. Obvious depiction.

Here are what some of the key lines mean to me:

living in the world of the jaded - let's face it. Most of us are NOT satisfied with where we are in life, relative(some of us simply have more potential than others, something most refuse to acknowledge in more than just thoughts) to our potential, or relative to our role models/those who have met their potential for self-actualization. There is the old saying, "we like to see our friends get ahead, but not too far ahead." This simply means those of us that aren't satisfied with ourselves, do not like to see others we associate with rising to substantially higher levels in life. My HS sociology teacher told us how he grew up in the 'hood, and when he decided to go to college he was ostracized for "trying to be white." No matter how (a)pathetic people try to cut you down to size, the underlying motivator is that this situation makes them feel worse about themselves. This is also depicted in Memoirs Of a Geisha. Jealous geisha tries to sabotage, psychologically and then physically, what would eventually become the city's most famous geisha ever. Then, the childhood friend eventually gets what she thought was the ultimate revenge, years later.

The true inspiration it's my obligation to Never, again, allow this to happen Where do I, begin? The choices are endless - this is where the songwriter becomes cognizant to what has been happening around him. Maybe it was somebody making jealous comments about his great success; whatever it was, he can no longer be influenced by the bullshit that the envious louts pepper him with. He has taken control of his own life, and has attained what others may not have wanted him to. Knowing what others wanted for him is his #1 motivator. He has so many examples of negative advice, suggestions, decisions by those around him that the truth is overwhelming when looked at objectively.

The thing I treasure most in life, cannot be taken away There will never be a reason why I will surrender to your advice - He wants everybody to know that they have ultimately failed, and that they will NEVER be able to stop him from using his gift, which is his musical talent/song writing ability. Everything somebody tries to convince him to do based on their own desires of his direction in life, will be totally disregarded, or even used as a motivator to make him reach his goal in life, which has obviously already happened. :)

One suggestion, use your descretion Before you label me blind - This is my favorite line in the entire song. It sums up the "die on your feet, or live on your knees" dichotomy quite powerfully. This goes back to before he achieved his status, but what he was referring to was the choice he made to go against the grain, and how most of us would believe he is foolish for wanting to go against the established order. Obviously he made the correct choice, or we wouldn't be here interpreting this wonderful song.

In a nutshell, this song is a big FVCK YOU to all of those who would rather devote your critical thinking skills and other mental resources to making sure those around you don't reach their potential, than dedicate yourself to rising above adversity(the very same that you create/contribute to) to reach yours. Whether you care to acknowledge/admit it or not, the majority of you who are reading this fall under the less productive category. Believe it or not, all of us have the potential to be quite successful, no matter which way you desire to be. What it comes down to, is will power, self-efficacy, developing an internal locus of control, etc. We are not born into any one lifestyle or another, but it is quite pathetic that we would rather read/watch about the failures of those who have eventually fallen, than those who have ultimately succeeded in their life's dream.

Muse – Unnatural Selection Lyrics 13 years ago
The song is definitely about the privileged, upper class of society; the "lucky" ones that were born into what they have.

When I first listened to this song, I got an idea in my head. Well, the reason why modern Homo sapiens have a much larger, well, male genitalia than other primates, or animals in general(relative to body size), is because of natural selection. When we developed into the current species of humans, and evolved psychologically, to become one of only two species on the planet to have sex for pleasure(the other being dolphins), this natural selection occured. What has happened since then, is that, despite large, tall men still being sought out by the more insecure females(something that goes back millions of years; one of the primary differences between males and females today), material wealth and power are also sought out by women. What does this have to do with the song? Well, when penis size/physical stature becomes irrelevant in the eyes of so many women, there will be no proliferation of wealthy men with large units; the overall size starts to shrink. Poor men, however, have nothing else to offer, and so poor women are naturally more attracted to larger men, thus increasing the reproduction rate of these larger men.

Maybe the term "prick," which is commonly used in reference to the affluent douchebag we all know, really does have some truth to it, after all :D

Muse – Resistance Lyrics 14 years ago
The way I interpret the song, is that it is about a forbidden love. I have zero knowledge of the "1984" book that many have referenced, but the fact that the story revolved around this circumstance leads me to believe that my general, personalized interpretation is at least acceptable. lol.

The truth is, I know from experience, EXACTLY what it is like to have an affair/relationship of the sort. The song is about a forbidden love, although the book it was based on might be dealing with strict, concrete social issues/norms/laws etc. but there are some unfortunate situations in contemporary American society that bring about this situation.

Mine was a couple years ago when I was in love with my boss... I'm not sure if we were on the same page about hiding it from the others, but even if we were, they would have caught on anyway. The chorus explains things quite well, from my perspective anyway. We are often caught between what we know to be right and just, and what we know the miserable masses in society will let us get away with. The chorus explains the confliction, quite clearly. The "they keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down" line is very vivid in my memory.

The truth is, a lot of people, especially those with a pathological inability to love another human being, will absolutely detest two lovers' union. It has nothing to do with social classes, inequality, or any of that. It has everything to do with "crab mentality," or the "if I can't have it, nobody else can" attitude towards others. Marrying for the benefits, apathy, etc. is ok, but if you are absolutely in love, the people who gave up trying/can't find true love will often be extremely jealous. It sucks, but such is reality.

"Quell your prayers for love and peace
You'll wake the thought police
We can hide the truth inside"

This could obviously be lumped in with the rest of the song's sentiment, but this is one of those verses that really make me wonder if those that interpret the song as being a wake up call to those capable of perceiving the evil that controls our world, on the grandest of scales, are right. It could mean to simply be quiet about your hopes and aspirations for a better world, until you KNOW you are in company of only those who can/will accept the same thoughts. It is futile to speak of such things to ignorant, simple minded people. Obviously, the majority of society frowns upon conspiracy theorists and the like, most of these people not being able to put the things together, but some just don't care. One could construe it as the "thought police," a constant threat to speaking your mind. He doesn't mean people can literally read your mind/prayers, obviously. So you have to keep your thoughts of this nature between yourself and those that understand, or face the consequences.

I interpret the song as a veiled attack on religiosity and idealism. I think that "don't waste your time, or time will waste you" and "how can we win when fools can be kings?" both mean that you should enjoy the small things in life, because not only will life pass you by when you are trying to fight the good fight(and most likely fail), but those in powerful positions in society are either corrupt or seduced by corruption, ie. fools(like many people think of Bush as being a puppet president, people imposed their wills through advising/manipulating).

He has the same view on "God" as I do. If there is one, IMHO, he is either not doing his job, or is sadistic.

As for the music video, it could be just a farce of epic movies/music videos, with the platitudes of the "good vs. evil" fight. Then again I don't know the band's ideologies at all, and have just recently started to listen to their music.

I think the song is absolutely awesome though, and is great driving music.

Tool – Schism Lyrics 14 years ago
Due to my experiences, I interpret the song to be a psychologically theoretical explanation for the inexplicable nature of a schism between close human beings, whether it be lovers, family or real friends.

I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers' souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes, testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end, crippling our communication

This is about the frustration of knowing that at one time, all was right in the world when you were with this person, spiritually. You know that things CAN work, because they HAVE been working, but those emotional connections are now severed. Pure intention juxtaposed probably means that generally in a separation, one of the parties has the "we CAN make things work again" sentiment, while the other has the "there is no use" sentiment. The two argue and debate their feelings, and in the process they are changed forever, for better or worse. The passion that was once felt, when two lovers feel that absolutely nothing can separate them, is the same, strong, driving force that creates the division between the two souls. It causes you to do irrational, desparate things, for better or worse. Examples are people immediately hooking up with somebody else to evoke jealousy in the event of a break up, and the irrational things that people do to try and prove that their love can continue on. I love that he hammers home the concept of communication becoming crippled. Everybody knows that in the event of a break up, there is NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING you can do to try to win them back if they are truly not willing to make the sacrifices to rekindle things. You can not reach a realistic agreement, when both sides have such different views. I know people who have appeared to hate each other for far longer than they were together; they will NEVER be decent to each other ever again. This is the fundamental differing that is mentioned.

I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame, it doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication

The writer sees the love unraveling, and recognized what is happening based on experience/observations. However, they are STILL powerless in the situation, due to the difference of feelings between the separated. Everybody is willing to point the finger, and take none of the blame in the event of a separation, but the hard truth is that both parties are at least partly responsible. Even if you know what you did was wrong and cuased the end of the relationship, or the wall tumbling down, you will still seek to blame the other party. Even though you will naturally desire to play the blame game, you will also always have the desire to make things civil, even though the emotions rule out over logic and this rarely ever happens. But you still have the desire, as futile as it may be.

The poetry that comes from the squarin' off between
And the circling is worth it, finding beauty in the dissonance

This is the whole reason for the song, at least in my interpretation. It is the song in a nutshell. It is one of those bittersweet things in life, that, even if you totally comprehend the situation from a strong, psychological standpoint, you are still powerless to stop the awesome force, like same poles on a magnet, making the impossible to overcome repelling force between objects. Songs about heartbreak are among the most, if not the most, popular influences in music composition, period. The negativity can actually be beautiful, like an act of nature that, although destructive, leaves the viewer in awe.

There was a time that the pieces fit but I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of a second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow and strengthen our communication

This seems to be about our decision making going awry, and neglecting/ignoring what is in our hearts. Second guessing your feelings and rationalizing becuase of being hurt(and fear) are futile, and "dangerous," yet we do it anyway. We do what makes us feel satisfied, vindicated, now, but these decisions drive us apart in the long run and create a division instead of the galvanizing/repair of our feelings towards each other that can occur if we set our differences aside, and let our deep feelings for each other govern our decisions. Communication is once again visited, as that can be the deal maker or deal breaker in a separation between two people. It is either effective, or it isn't. There really is no in between here. Our ego can allow us to be governed by our emotions, or it can govern our decisions and reasoning enough to allow for a mutual repair of a relationship... but both parties need to be on the same page here, otherwise it all falls apart quickly and surely. Our emotional need to try to make two wrongs become a right can either be suppressed, or it isn't, and destroys communication.

Cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion

Between supposed brothers
Between supposed lovers

This is a very powerful part of the song. Once again, communication(although indirectly this time) is the focal point. The worst thing you can do in the event of a schism is to simply avoid and repress any desire to keep in touch with the other. This silence destroys any willingness that the seemingly irreconcilable partner(the one that initiated the break up) might have had, period. This can be where the tendency for the vindictive frame of mind can be either started, or magnified. Let's face it, we are acting out of spite, and not compassion, more often than not, in the long run of a schism. The cowardly silence that is seen as a way to assuage the other and avoid conflict is not a positive contributor as you may irrationally believe. It silently drives the wedge further. I have had very specific experience with this myself, unfortunately.

The repetition of "I know the pieces fit" at the end of the song is simply the writer voicing their frustration, of what I mentioned earlier, which is the logical knowledge that two people can coexist, obviously due to the fact that it was reality for some amount of time, but for reasons unseen by most, they simply can not, even though they were able to at one time. We can not fathom such an abrupt, colossal change in one or both of us, and simply long for the time to return when both souls lived in harmony.

Muse – Map of the Problematique Lyrics 14 years ago
The song could be about two things, IMHO.

The first, being similar in nature to "schism" by Tool, the absolutely fantastic song about, well, a schism between a man and woman, or friends/family members who have been close, but now are faced with the illogical, inexplicable nature of parting ways.

Fear, and panic in the air
I want to be free
From desolation and despair
And I feel like everything I sow
Is being swept away
When I refuse to let you go

This could be easily explained by wanting to be with somebody so bad, even though it is not realistic. The heart broken wants to get past the situation logically, but emotionally is still very attached to the other.

And no one thinks they are to blame
Why can't we see
That when we bleed we bleed the same

This is an analogy to the lyrics "I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down. No fault, none to blame, it doesn't mean I don't desire To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication" among others from Schism. It simply states that in a schism, everybody thinks they are the just, winner, righteous etc. when the whole situation is just a failure to communicate and be compassionate. We are so quick to "point the finger, blame the other" that we can never accept the fact that we are inextricably intertwined with one another, no matter what our ego/emotions would like us to believe.

My other theory is that of a song about our failure as individuals to create a society that is free from the stratification that we have not escaped from.

Fear, and panic in the air
I want to be free
From desolation and despair
And I feel like everything I sow
Is being swept away
When I refuse to let you go

This could be talking about the subjugation of the common man in society by those in power. We are over taxed, over worked slaves, and most of us acquiesce to this lifestyle, where 1% own about 99% of assets. The songwriter wants us to be freed from this nightmare, and refuses let go of his dream for an equal society.

Life will flash before my eyes
So scattered almost
I want to touch the other side
And no one thinks they are to blame
Why can't we see
That when we bleed we bleed the same

Life sucks when you live to work, instead of work to live. Life is very short, and good memories/events are sparsely scattered throughout, if your life turns into a grind. Everybody rationalizes the reasons why society is so decadent, and come up with reasons why their apathy and complacency are justified. Men are all created equal, more or less, but the way we live our lives, is certainly not that. Many rich and powerful men are born into their positions, but the writer wants to see a world in which everybody is free to do/have what they are willing to work for, instead of working your hands to the bone and eventually realizing that you have accomplished nothing of significance throughout your life, because that is the life you were born to.

Those are just my 3 a.m. interpretations of the lyrics.

Rush – Closer to the Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
"Looking further though, it's an attitude that many should follow: Don't grab for power just because it's there."

I couldn't possibly agree more... with both the interpretation of the verse, and also the philosophy that it implies. Unfortunately a majority of us are guilty of this, and it affects all types of people. The scary thing is, those that should not be leading people, or become authority figures, do so anyway because of greed, lust for power/control etc. I believe that it is a sign of an advancement in your personal growth, and this will be one of the characteristics that will mark the next great renaissance in our society... if we reach the evolution.

After the last verse, the very first is next in importance. It is nearly impossible for the rest of the world to change for the positive and altruistic... unless those at the top lead by example, and #1. allow us to, and #2. show that it is alright. If you think about it, you really can't even hold a job in many corporations, regardless of skills or educational requirements, unless you are willing to do everything that is asked, even if basic ethics and morals are compromised in doing so. If those at the bottom of the latter try changing all by their lonesome, they're likely going to be out of a job, rendering it almost impossible for all but the most idealistic to feasibly "be the ones who start."

I don't have much knowledge about drug use, period, but maybe he is referring to some kind of effect of or to some kind of gland or another, as the result of drug use. Maybe they are referring to the abnormal usage of the pineal or adrenal glands? I believe meth shuts down your pineal glands, which secretes melatonin, which would allow the user to stay up for days or weeks on end. But I don't know, it's pretty much speculation, since I don't know enough about the use of hard drugs that rock stars typically use.

Linkin Park – Pushing Me Away Lyrics 14 years ago
This whole entire album pretty much encapsulated the life of a teenager/young adult. This is the best music in the world for somebody who is very introspective and genuine. This is the best song on the album though, IMHO. It hits the nail on the head, and conveys the raw emotion of the song topic in such a great way. They could have named this album Adolescence Theory, and it would be the most aptly named album title in the history of recorded music.

Just like pretty much any music out there, this song can be interpreted in several different ways, but I believe it is about a dead end relationship with a partner. You can apply it to just about any type of interpersonal relationship, but I think that is the primary meaning of the song. I think it's about the way that relationships are sustained for too long, which can be any amount of time, when they simply aren't possible to endure due to the differences between both parties. Kind of like when you see the schism of a marriage from a mile away, because the two were together for the wrong reasons. Eventually, the major differences will have no choice but to overcome the temporary and superficial attraction, whatever it may be.

I watched this happen with my mother's second marriage, and it almost happened to me. I was deeply attracted to a young woman, and in the end, things just simply didn't work out, no matter how hard we tried. Our vast differences in personality created such a clash that our very strong, primal, physical desires failed to overcome them, even as she tried to convey that she was a person that she was not, to compensate for her perceived shortcomings. Even though it was a painful experience for the both of us, I'm very glad that we didn't succeed, because I likely would have ended up one of the millions of unhappily married men who made the mistake of going too fast and entering a shitty relationship with the promise of things being right, when they most certainly aren't. The best part of it, is knowing that, what was initially misperceived as a mistake by me, ended up being a blessing in disguise. It truly is amazing how what can seem to be the mistake of your lifetiime, is actually the best thing you have ever done. This song is about making that right decision, although it can seem like the wrong one initially.

Flobots – Handlebars Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe the song is about the dichotomy that is becoming an adult. When we are kids, we are generally positive beings, and even if we aren't, we don't really have the ability to do the things we do when we are older anyway.

When you become an adult, you can either become a common person, and live a relatively mediocre life, or you can become somebody who doesn't have very good morals or ethics, even if you think you do, because those things can become convoluted or obscured by your drive to succeed. Whether the success is the result of stabbing people in the back/being a sycophant to climb up the corporate latter, or by taking illegal money by lobbyists/corporations to make sure those with power and wealth become even more powerful or wealthy, so that the little guy gets shit on, but it's ok because you have your seven houses, just about everybody who becomes successful in many of the careers and professions gets there because they are willing to do the unethical things, small or large, that most of us aren't.

This used to be my nemesis song on RB2, on bass; the one song I could beat on expert, but have my arm almost fall off in the process. Since I DLed it though, I've gotten better overall, the notes come slower to me etc. and it's not that bad, but I still remember the nights where I would simply fail due to giving up because my arm was in so much pain towards the end of the three minute interlude or whatever it would be called. The lyrics might not be the deepest or most complex, but this has always been one of my favorite Rush songs nonetheless.

This is just an awesome song, about the joys of taking a car out for a spin. It could be in a future time when cars are outlawed, due to smog, or a lack of oil, but whatever the case may be, it's simply about how driving a fun car can give you nonpareil thrills and adrenaline. Musically, this is probably my favorite Rush song, right up there with Temples of Syrinx.

Rush – Closer to the Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
^^^ This is the general idea. If every person did their part to create a better world, instead of acquiescing to hatred, fear, jealousy, apathy, among other things that hold us back as a society, the world would be a much, much better place. And it doesn't even require much effort on our parts IMHO.

Rush – The Trees Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is about dissension between social classes. I perceive it to be quite literally about human greed. On one end of the spectrum, you have those who run companies, and get paid a hell of a lot of money, while paying the working class employees hardly anything in comparison. Then on the other, you have those who have formed unions, which have the company by the balls, that "keep all the trees equal by hatchet, axe and saw."

Either way, you have guys getting millions of dollars for running companies in the ground, and you have those making $28 an hour to stand on an assembly line with an impact socket, fastening lug nuts to automobiles with preset torque settings. While the guy that has actual skills and education, rebuilds the engines that failed do to perfunctory tolerances and shoddy build quality for half the pay. "So the maples formed a union, and demanded equal rights." This is the pretext that unions currently exist under. For some industries, they are actually okay, but for others they are simply greed-driven machines.

If only Peart would have had a chance to see the UAW reps stand in front of congress, telling them they refuse to make concessions to build cars that cost $2,000 more per product solely because of labor costs, while their companies are losing billions of dollars a year and are facing imminent bankruptcy. "And the trees are all kept equal, by hatchet, axe and saw."

One of the best Metallica songs ever made. Pure, unabridged power metal.

Queensrÿche – Empire Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is simple, IMHO. It delineates how our country is turning to shit, yet we pump billions upon billions upon billions of dollars into other countries so that our oil companies can make their billions of dollars in net profit every quarter.

With our ridiculous expenditures on national "defense" and the neglect of our own law enforcement, gang activity, violent crime etc. is going to keep on increasing. My city, for example, is always voting for an increase in law enforcement funding, to combat the perpetually-increasing violent crime rate in this shithole. It is simply insufficient.

A guy I know abcsonded parole, and the FBI caught him on a train 2,000 miles away, and hauled him in. Where the fvck is the effort/resources to catch actual dangers to society? Police departments depend on frivolous citations and fines to pay their own salaries, that's it. They don't really care about real crime, unless something falls into their lap. Or they don't have the resources to fight it fully.

Metallica – The Unforgiven Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is open to the interpretation of each young man that has listened to it. The lyrics are pretty ambiguous.

For me, it hits home on a personal level, like I'm sure it has with many guys. I know what it is like to suffer from a childhood of mental/emotional abuse at the hands of my parents, and to never forgive them for it. While we are young, we are ALL defenseless, and for a parent who is supposed to love their child and nurture them to treat them in such insidious ways, it really makes you wonder about the state of our society. People know that all children are extremely impressionable, and their environment, surroundings etc. are basically the biggest factor in how their child will mentally and emotionally mature and develop. So many people are completely oblivious to this facet of childhood/parenting. If you mention "child abuse," 95% of people automatically think of beating your kid, and nothing else comes to mind. The truth is, there are scars that last forever that do not appear on your skin.

Alice in Chains – Man In The Box Lyrics 15 years ago
I interpret this song as a veiled attack on religion in general, Christianity in specific.

"I'm the man in the box
Buried in my shit
Won't you come and save me, save me
"

This could mean any number of things, but I interpret it as kind of making a jab at the "my real treasure waits in heaven" people, who go through life afraid to live life to the fullest, with the fear that they will be looked upon as unworthy of heaven by God. Most of the highly successful people in life(the ones that had to do unethical things as well as dedicate their life to their career, not athletes etc. who are successful because of a God given talent) simply do not have religious faith, as they live their live with the "you only live once" mentality, and not the self-impeding, "I have to live my life on eggshells because I want my spot in heaven" mentality. This type of person could very well be the "man in the box" the song is referring to, with no real drive for personal advancement/success. They are stuck in an invisible box that is created by the fears the Bible instills in them. I hope that makes sense.

"Feed my eyes, can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries, will be wasted
Feed my eyes now you've sewn them shut"

The chorus makes me think of one thing, The Crusades. People who denied Christ were literally wasted, in a time that made our current Islamic fanaticism and violence pale in comparison. The whole eyes sewn shut and feed my eyes thing could very well refer to "blind faith." Most people's religiosity is indoctrinated into them at a young age, and not discovered by their own volition.

"I'm the dog who gets beat
Shove my nose in shit
Won't you come and save me, save me"

This could refer to the fact that all over the world, terrible things happen, and God never really does much in the way of divine intervention to stop/prevent these things. This is one basis for the atheists' non-belief in a God; if there was a God, he would have to be sadistic to allow the things that happen on a daily basis.

The song could very well be about simple animal abuse/cruelty, but this is just my interpretation of the lyrics. I don't even know the band enough to know where they stand/stood on the issue of religion; for all I know they could all be Bible thumpers lol.
