| The Brian Jonestown Massacre – The Mother of All Fuckers Lyrics | 1 year ago |
|
Let's fix the lyrics: Do you remember your past And the dreams that once lived in your head? Or maybe the day That you laid down and died for death Let's wind back the clock Make the bullshit walk and forget it There's a seed inside And it don't ever die, it lives So live You've got to make yourself clear And have no fears When your back's to the wall You've got to kill them all And when you look they're small After all |

| The Psychedelic Furs – India Lyrics | 1 year ago |
| I always thought this song was about Heroin. | |
| The Call – I Don't Wanna Lyrics | 1 year ago |
| The song is about a would-be father regretting the abortion of his child. What is left unsaid is his involvement in the decision to abort. Was he encouraging the abortion, supportive of the abortion, or was he not in favor of the abortion yet refused to go against the mother's decision. Regardless, he regrets the outcome. He ain't here to do the things a parent would do. And yet, he knows that the child would love him. | |
| Butthole Surfers – Lady Sniff Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| I'm pretty sure he is saying "Vern" not Murray. As in Ernest P Worrell's "Know what I mean, Vern?" commercials. | |
| Björk – Army of Me Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| Is it just me? When I hear Bjork sing the words "army of me" it sounds like she is singing "I love you". I swear the first few times I heard this, I thought the lyrics were "And if you complain once more, we'll meet and I'll love you". | |

| Is it just me or does the line "It's a competitive world" sound like they are singing "You're second best in this world"? | |
| Télépopmusik – Breathe Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| The song is about end of life. The person is on her deathbed and a loved one (lover or family member or child or grandchild), is there watching, waiting, hoping, praying. The person is haunted because she wants to live (just breathe, just believe), but knows the end is near. Every time she wakes up or opens her eyes, the loved one is still there. It is a haunting feeling not being at full capacity to enjoy life, but hanging on to be with the one you love. | |

| I always thought this song was about gang violence. | |
| Bauhaus – Who Killed Mr. Moonlight? Lyrics | 10 years ago |

| Hüsker Dü – I Apologize Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
The song is about frustrations with different personalities within a loving relationship with a few personal references. All these crazy mixed up lies They're floating all around Making these assumptions brings me down And you get tight-lipped, how do I know what you think? The lover tends to hold his emotions inside and does not share thoughts or feelings. This causes frustration for the author who tries to read between the lines of his lover's previous statements (could be contradictory or could include received misinterpretations based on the line "all these crazy mixed up lies"). The lover does not care to elaborate nor is he inclined to elaborate ("and you get tight-lipped"), leaving the author to (rightfully or wrongfully) making more assumptions ("how do I know what you think?") Is it something I said when I lost my mind? Temper too quick, makes me blind I believe this is a very personal reference to Bob Mould's drug and alcohol addition. Bob is unsure if it is something he did under the influence which he may not even remember and would not have been in a state to recognize the pain he caused. I apologize... Said I'm sorry, now it's your turn, Can you look me in the eyes and apologize? The author has made an apology. But he waits for a similar response. Once again, the lover is quiet and doesn't acknowledge the apology nor does he offer any wrong-doing on his own part. So now we sit around staring at the walls We don't do anything at all Take out the garbage, maybe, but the dishes don't get done This is the response. Situation normal. Some day to day chores continue, others do not. It is as if the apology went on deaf ears. The introverted lover just continues as he always has. |

| Joy Division – Day of the Lords Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I always thought this was a self-relfection from Ian Curtis. He was clearly distrubed about his epilepsy. I always assumed other kids made fun of him. "These are your friends from childhood, through youth, Who goaded you on, demanded more proof". Day of the Lords is a reference to the "normal" kids who damage all those that appear/act different. "And the bodies obtained, the bodies obtained." |

| The Cars – Bye Bye Love Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This is an ode to Vincent van Gogh. "It's such a wavy midnight and you slip into insane" is a reference to Starry Night. Starry Night was painted during his stay at an asylum in Saint-Remy. "It's an orangy sky" is a reference to Olive Grove: Orange Sky. "Always it's some other guy" is a reference to Sien Hoomik, a pregnant prostitute and mother of a child born out of wedlock, with whom van Gogh had a romantic relationship. "lullaby" is a reference to the La Berceuse painting series of Augustine Roulin. "Bye bye love" is a reference to van Gogh's suicide. And yes, van Gogh had blue eyes, mass confusion, and was intensely illustrious. | |
| Discharge – Massacre Of Innocence (Air Attack) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| This is an anti-war song. | |
| Alice in Chains – Man In The Box Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
This is a pro-Christian song. "man in the box" is street jargon for someone in prison. The two lyrics - man in the box and dox that gets beat are metaphoric expressions for being punished for one's sins. He has done wrong and is now being punished. He needs a Savior and calls out for someone to Save him. Now let's look at the chorus. Feed my eyes is a reference to the Book of Genesis Chapter 3. 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” This parallels the "feed my eyes". Adam and Eve ATE from the trea of knowledge of good and evil and they're EYES WERE OPENED. But now they know good and evil and this is a very troubling fact. They immediately realize they have disobeyed God and "denied their maker". The chorus begs to reverse the clock and "sew them [opened eyes] shut". "Jesus Christ" - blatently brings about the belief in which God is True. "Deny your maker, he who tries, will be wasted". The "wasted" is a reference to Hell. This sentence is a warning, for those who deny their maker. "Feed my eyes now you've sewn them shut". This goes back to Genesis Chapter 3. After man has eaten from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, God banishes them from the Garden and closes off their way to the Tree of Life. |

| oh wow, when I hear D Boon sing this song, the line "Search Deep Inside" sounds like "Stick your dick inside". I always thought this was a song about fornication. Reading the lyrics, it has a much deeper meaning. | |
| Tommy James And The Shondells – Crimson and Clover Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| The song title came about before the lyrics were written. Tommy Jones chose the title for its unknown meaning when combining his favorit color (crimson) with his favorite flower (clover). James first wrote a song for the phrase with bassist Mike Vale. But that song was dismissed. And James collaborated with drummer Peter Lucia Jr for the lyrics we have today. | |
| Butthole Surfers – Human Cannonball Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Is this really the lyric "You're probably feeding Like a human cannibal" or is it "You're probably feeling Like a human cannonball"? I'm not sure if the song is about sadomasochism or if it is a breakup song. |
|
| Bauhaus – All We Ever Wanted Was Everything Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I always thought the second line was "all we ever got was Gold". It made me think the song was about human greed. No matter how much you have "gold, jelly for breakfast, being the cream" of the crop socially, you still want more "everything". And the rest of us Factorytown have-nots eating sandwhich bars, barbed wire, and squash over and over desire to be that haves. Greed on all levels. No matter what you are given, you always want more. | |
| Hüsker Dü – Chartered Trips Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
When I was younger I thought this song was about an acid trip. But it's not. Then again, when I was younger, I thought every song was about LSD. Anyhow, this song ties in nicely with the Zen Arcade concept of a child running away from home and realizing that its not any better. The chartered trip away is an illusion. No matter where you are - the illusion is that a better place is elsewhere. Go travel my friend. |
|
| Ramones – Commando Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I tend to agree with PeteyRamone's assessment. The song was written by Dee Dee Ramone, so it makes sense to align with his life growing up in Germany with a military father. But in an interview with Your Flesh Magazine on his book The Heebie-Jeebies at CBGBS: A Secret History of Jewish Punk, Steven Lee Beeber gives this point of view: "it combines tongue in cheek fascism, digs at Nazis, silliness and shout outs to New York Jews in one nice package, namely, the chorus, which lists the rules for mercenaries." |
|
| Ramones – Loudmouth Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Is it just me, or does when Joey sing "You're a loudmouth baby", it sounds like he is singing "You are not my baby"? | |
| Siouxsie and the Banshees – Lunar Camel Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| It's a song about sex. Monsoon refers to the male orgasm. Flying to/over the moon refers to the female orgasm. The song is about the female getting to an orgasm after the male. | |
| Black Flag – I Don't Care Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Makes sense. I always thought he was singing "you look like Reagan anyways" (referring to President Ronald Reagan). But a friend of mine thinks he is singing "you look like your pregnant anyways". | |
| Devo – Whip It Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I always thought this song was about corporal punishment until I read the band member's statements about the origins on SongFacts. | |
| Modern English – I Melt with You Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This is a post nuclear love song. Circa 1982 in a cold war. The world was scared of the arms race between two super powers USA and USSR. The world knew that there was enough nuclear warheads to destroy the world several times over. "Melt" is the image people had of what happens to flesh after a nuclear attack. Best to spend the last seconds in the arms of one you love. | |
| Robyn Hitchcock – Sometimes I Wish I Was a Pretty Girl Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I always thought this was a song about sadomasochism. Wreck is a slang term for rough sex. | |
| Violent Femmes – Add It Up Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
On the surface, this song appears to be about teenage angst and sexual frustration. But what exactly is being added up? This is a song about purchasing service from a prostitute. The boy is frustrated and wanting (why can't I get....). The purchase of the gun was necessary for him to go to the bad part of town (presumably where the prostitutes are). Broken-down kitchen at the top of the stairs, Can I mix in with your affairs? Share a smoke, make a joke, Grasp and reach for a leg of hope -- Is describing the brothel. Toward the end of the song, right before the act takes place, the prostitute says "wait a minute honey, I'm gonna add it up". She wants to count the money before performing service. |
