Into It. Over It. – Portland, OR Lyrics

According to Evan the band was on tour in Portland when they met a girl and invited her for a drink at a bar. This girl was from Tuscon. At some point she took offence and called the guys 'fucking jocks'. |

From Evan in a live version on youtube: 'It's about arguing about jazz with your friend, and in this situation I was Miles Davis and she was Billie Holiday'
I can't make out what he says after that. |

He's feeling kinda down and aimless and drinking too much. He thinks that it would do him good if he stayed over at his girlfriend's for once instead of going out and getting drunk. |

Adem – Long Drive Home Lyrics

@[mascam:2471] yeh, but he is a bit of an asshole, given that he initially acts like he's no idea what the problem is ('I don't know what I've done'), and then he says he's beginning to wish he had spoken to his ex. It would piss me off, anyway. But then I'vve been just that kind of asshole myself, so props to Adem for being honest enough to put it into song |

benheideveld I think you might be right. In any case, Darling Belle is also a war song, and judging by the train and the gas light I'm guessing is about WWI |

Incredible String Band – Swift as the Wind Lyrics

I see it as somewhere between catskin's and megasam's interpretation.
I think it is more than just the imagination of the child - it's too clearly described and the imagery is not childlike. However I don't really see the indication that the child is seeing death. I believe the child is seeing a reality that adults can't see or believe in. The last three lines describe how the child will see the sword-wielding figure again, but not for some time, not until s/he has spent 'some time downstairs' - a euphemism for becoming an adult who can no longer see such things. Perhaps the child will see him again after passing from this world. |

Why? – Shirtless, Sheetless and Lyrics

I love the line 'every fucking word that I tell you is really self-addressed'; it applies to several people I've had relationships with, and myself.
The way apathy is portrayed in the last half of the song - I identify with that too :) |

also, i recently met a lovely girl for the first time and this song came to mind. that got me thinking: perhaps it's about how a relationship might grow from such early meetings. |

This is a very sweet song. I also like it cos there's not many people who've recorded songs for their mum like this, so props to Taylor. |

Nirvana – Negative Creep Lyrics

You can't get too specific about the meaning, I mean the lyrics aren't exactly coherent. That's not a criticism; I think Kurt was just trying to convey a feeling, an atmosphere. And that atmosphere is pretty dark! Personally, for me, it's like the singer is some kind of drugged up screwed up character who has deflowered an innocent young girl. |

Arthur Russell – Oh Fernanda Why Lyrics

The title on the album sleeve is 'Oh Fernanda Why' but I have seen these lyrics written as 'Fernando' and that seems to make more sense to me so that's what I've done here. |

Wow - no comments for this song? How many songs are there that deal with the issue of honesty and integrity in a relationship like this one? I can't think of any. I struggle with exactly those things and this song is an inspiration to me to be better. |

Frank Black – Brackish Boy Lyrics

A walking fish is a fish out of water. The guy was a fish out of water cos he was adopted into a family that wasn't his culture. Cos he didn't fit in he decided to leave and go back to Mexico but, ironically, he was smashed on the way.
Dat's what I fink |

I think it's about the inexorable passage of time, the triviality of one individual's existence that is yet so important to that individual. |

I can't figure out what this song is about, but I love the way the 7/8 timing of the chorus makes the lines run into each other, giving the feeling of uncontrollable intrusive thoughts |

Why? – Sanddollars Lyrics

The theories here suggesting that this song is about coke are pretty lame. I mean, just cos of the line 'did you stay up all night'? And suggesting that 'elephant ivory' is cocaine is pretty fanciful. TTOCCS suggestion that it is a piano is far more believable.
I have a question. Yoni sings in the first and the second person, that is he seems to be singing about somebody else. What do people think? |
