Places Named After Numbers Lyrics
Beyond below above
A gravity that slumbers
At the center of
Places named after numbers
A different kind of love
She was right
She was right there
She was right there all the time
Collapsing all the way
And though it seems from here
That she was never there
Light beams disappear
Into her blackened hair
I wonder if they reappear
She was right
She was right there
She was right there all the time
Collapsing all the way
A gravity that slumbers
At the center of
Places named after numbers
A different kind of love
She was right there
She was right there all the time
Collapsing all the way
That she was never there
Light beams disappear
Into her blackened hair
I wonder if they reappear
She was right there
She was right there all the time
Collapsing all the way

I have long loved this song. Frank Black used to write a lot of lyrics that were riddles. This is a love song about black holes. Black Holes aren't technically given names to my knowledge but the signature energy emitted that leads to their inference or discovery often has long numerical name references that are most closely associated as the "name" of the black holes themselves. Black holes are thought to be the result of collapsed stars and cannot be seen with the naked eye.
The lyrics make reference to these facts surrounding black holes.
P.S. I wish Frank Black still wrote lyrics in such an interesting way. It was always a joy to get his latest record and start decrypting what he wrote about.
Read "Gateway", by Frederik Pohl.
That's a cool interpretation of this, chineselaundry. This might be my favorite song on the album. :)
yeh nice interp
I'd say you are bang on there chineselaundry. Frank is well known to be obsessed with space and ufo's and shit like that.. I too miss that style of writing.
chineselaundry is right on the mark. frank confirmed this interpretation himself when i saw him live many years ago.
