@[joystreet:52304]
The 90s were a different time. Songs were allowed to just be songs, they didn't have to be constantly 'on message', especially on obscure album tracks like this one. You could make a song about murder but that didn't make you a murderer. You could make a song about killing yourself but that didn't mean you were suicidal. You could make a song that degraded women without being a mysoginist. Nobody was going to dig through every album looking to whip up a frenzy on social media because... well, there was no social media and the regular media didn't care.
It was a simpler and most who remember it would probably say better time in this regard. |

| The Strawbs – Part of the Union Lyrics

If you know anything about Britain in the 70s you will know that Trade Unions were not protecting anyone from anything. They were exploiting ridiculous labour laws to hold the whole country hostage to the point where we didn't even have enough power so that everyone could have electricity. They drove the country to the point of bankruptcy! Your username indicates that maybe you think that kind of clusterfuck is actually a good thing, but for me if that is the enemy of capitalism then give me capitalism every day of the week. |

It's funny looking back on some of these songs from the late 90s now. Record companies were so desperate to land "the next Spice Girls" that they would throw any group of semi-attractive girls in a group, give them a shoddily written song with a 'girl power' vibe and hope to make a hit, not really understanding at that point what made the Spice Girls successful. This one in particular might win an award for being the most vapid song of the decade. |

The perspective of the lyrics is a bit garbled (switched from the first to 3rd person during the 'hospital' verse) but the song seems to be about a mother (or maybe father) warning a man not to mess with her daughter. |

I'm curious what Biggie was thinking when he wrote that last line. In the song, after the lyrics finish you hear sounds of a baby crying, implying that the daughter wasn't killed. Is he implying remorse at killing someone who had a baby daughter? Or is this a continuation from earlier in the verse where he is talking about killing one man and sparing all innocent lives and this indicates the successful execution of that plan despite a very close shave? |

| Katy Perry – This Is How We Do Lyrics

A feel good song, celebrating doing all those things that people do when they are young and irresponsible that society frowns upon such as:
- Getting drunk and making a fool of yourself
- Having one-night stands
- Blowing all your money on booze
- Burning the candle at both ends
I love this song, even though I am way too old for this stuff now and don't even like pop music much it is a really catchy song that reminds me of good times. |

| Kanye West – Hey Mama Lyrics
|
On the face of it just a song about loving his mom, kind of like the 2Pac song "Dear Mama". However, if you look closely at the lyrics of the two sons they are not much alike. 2Pac's song seems like a genuine message of thanks to his mom, mentioning all the times that she was there for him, even though she had the challenging task of bringing up several children as a single mother. This song, on the other hand, a just a thinly-veiled brag. Look at the lyrics and read what he actually says. Beyond maybe the first half of the first verse this isn't a song about Kanye's mom, it's a song about Kanye. About how successful he is and how he can afford to buy his mom all these presents.
I'm not saying it's a bad song as such. Let's face it, a large majority of rap is just self-glorification (including a lot of 2Pac's). But it grates on me a bit about how an artist can be so weasley about it. Looking back on it, I think this is the song that started to put me off Kanye as an artist after I loved him in his early days. |

I always thought it was "the river wild will take you, lonely child". It seems to fit in better with the rest of the song.

I was always confused by the last line of this song. Does it mean that everyone considered him the coward of the county... until then. Or does it mean that even after the fight in the bar everyone still considered him the coward of the county (maybe because he killed them in a cowardly way or something). |

Why is it that every time a band who are a bit different start having chart success, the hipster community always labels them sell-out corporate mainstream crap. Carry on listening to your obscure CDs that nobody has heard of and consider yourself superior because of it, losers. |

| Har Mar Superstar – D.U.I. Lyrics

Fundamentally it's a song about calling women for sex when you're drunk "dialling under the influence".
More specifically it's about women who you don't want as your girlfriend for whatever reason (maybe your ex) but she is your 'booty call' when you are drunk and struck out at the party/club and you are both happy with that arrangement. |

| David Byrne – Lazy Lyrics

I think this song is a reflection on the modern world where some people choose to do nothing with their lives and find it easier to just live off the work of others and the comparatively comfortable life that society allows even those who do nothing to help themselves to have.
It is a reflection both of the fundamental selfishness of these people, but also of the tragedy of them. How they would love to live life, to have money, a girlfriend and a job and all those other things, but are trapped in a cycle of laziness and dependency. |

LOL at the girl's name "Jennifer Eccles". It's funny you never meet adults with names like that, but in school they seem to be commonplace.
As for the lyrics, they're fairly self-explanatory I think. Naive playground puppy love etc. |

You know what? The more I listen to this song, the more I think it's not really about a break up at all, it's about those annoying friends who always try to trivialise your problems, thinking they can make things better with corny lines such as 'there's plenty more fish in the sea'. |
