Suede – Starcrazy Lyrics 2 years ago
The lyrics above are wrong, they're half correct and then half picnic by the motorway.

Anyway. This song for me is about a groupie / wannabe groupie / ex groupie that's only interested in having sex with band members. Not sure how the 'violence' bridge fits in but the rest seems straight forward. Great tune

Jay-Z – The Prelude Lyrics 13 years ago
The lyrics are actually :

Before Steve Jobs, made the iPod,
Was gettin hand jobs, we call that intimate (in-to-mit)

It's a play on words because intimate sounds like 'in to mit', mit being the palm of a hand, and it being a hand job.

Bruce Springsteen – Badlands Lyrics 13 years ago
It's saying that world won't waste any time getting you down if you let it, SO DON'T LET IT!

He talks about the way people are never happy/satisfied in life, how they let things get them down, but "it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive"

Bruce is the fuckin man

David Bowie – Starman Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the starman is his inner self, someone who would 'blow your mind' with experimental music and his new sound.

Some parents were against their children listening to artists such as Bowie (maybe due to drug abuse or his general image, or still against Rock and Roll?) and so he's saying he'd love to just create the type of music that he wants and just let everyone enjoy it. I think he did that to a certain extent but had to hold back a bit in order to reach record company / radio expectations. Great song by a great artist any way you look at it.

The Velvet Underground – After Hours Lyrics 13 years ago
It's about being an alcoholic sitting at the bar hoping last orders never comes.

You don't want to see the 'sunshine' because it signals the time to go home, you'd prefer to toast to 'never' (or something equally as insignificant). You see all these people having fun and envy them, but when it all comes down you won't do anything to help yourself, just have another drink and hope the bar never ends.

Great song

Scott Walker – Hero Of The War Lyrics 13 years ago
Quite straightforward I think. He's talking about a young lad who went to war and didn't come back, sarcastically saying "don't worry that your life has gone to shit, you're a hero of war".

He no longer has his girlfriend (the whore) and he's followed in his Dad's path by dying in battle. He's left his mother for a gun and this decision has left his mother in more pain. He's caused her more pain despite her going through childbirth for him. The songs sniping at him 'don't worry about all of that though, you're still in the paper, you're still a hero'. Is it worth it?

Bob Dylan – Lay Lady Lay Lyrics 13 years ago
It's just an amazing love song.

He's got his girl back to his house and it's time for her to go home, but neither of them want to part. The song is about that moment, where he's just saying "why don't you stay the night / I love you so much / we can make each other so happy"

The only question about this song is which are the best lyrics:

His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean
And you're the best thing that he's ever seen

or

I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night

Paul McCartney – Listen to What the Man Said Lyrics 13 years ago
Either that or 'the man' is the boy all along and it represents how he see's the world differently now he is out of the army/war (he used to be negative, now he's positive)

submissions
Paul McCartney – Listen to What the Man Said Lyrics 13 years ago
The man is the government (like 'Uncle Sam', 'the man' is another name) & the boy once he becomes a man. After the government made a 'boy' go to war, he came back and met a girl and became a man.

The negative things are what the government (man )said
The positive things are what the grown up boy (man) said

John Lennon – I Know (I Know) Lyrics 13 years ago
This is an apology to Paul McCartney. Also takes riff from Paul's "I've Got A Feeling" (from Let It Be album).

The years have passed so quickly
One thing I've understood
I am only learning
To tell the trees from the wood

-This is saying he's now seeing his true friends through all the fake ones (or vice versa = same outcome)

I know what's coming down
And I know where it's coming from
And I know and I'm sorry (yes I am)
But I never could speak my mind

-He's too proud/ashamed/shy (it's unclear) to openly admit he's sorry, but he truly is for songs like 'How Do You Sleep' and the whole situation.

And I know just how you feel
And I know now what I have done
And I know and I'm guilty (yes I am)
But I never could read your mind

- John has realised that he had misread Paul's actions/things he'd said - basically that they'd had a misunderstanding

I know what I was missing
But now my eyes can see
I put myself in your place
As you did for me

-Carrying on from the last stanza, but then acknowledging that Paul had tried to look out for John (and maybe the other Beatles, depending on what time this song refers to) when it was most needed, by putting himself in John's positon. John is now putting himself in Paul's position and seeing how unfair he's been to him.

Today I love you more than yesterday
Right now I love you more right now

-Can be taken both literally and as the song 'yesterday' which John admitted made him jealous that so many people had covered it

And I know what's coming down
I can feel where it's coming from
And I know it's getting better (all the time)
As we share in each other's minds

-Repeat from second stanza, followed by a quote from a song they famously worked together on (Sgt. Peppers' "Getting Better")

Class song

The Beatles – The Long and Winding Road Lyrics 14 years ago
I hear it as a love song. Maybe it started off with 'the long and winding road' after being influenced by the road to his house but then added in the romance to the song.

I've always appreciated the song but it was never one of my favourites but then I nearly cried when I heard it live. Unbelievable

The Beatles – The Ballad of John and Yoko Lyrics 14 years ago
John loved Yoko immensely and was happy with her, that is all that matters.

Did anyone ever consider if amazing songs such as "Imagine" "Mind Games" etc would have existed if not for Yoko? If you're going to criticise her for changing John then you need to also give her a lot of credit.

This is a great song about the troubles they had getting married and then the trouble they had with the bed in for peace. I just love the bass line in this, so powerful.

Bob Marley and the Wailers – No Woman No Cry Lyrics 14 years ago
Its about being poor and living with nothing. Some of the women were crying and upset and Bob's saying "No woman, don't cry, everything's going to be alright"

Rumour is that he changed the song credits of the song to one of his good friend's name who ran a soup kitchen, enabling the man to keep running the soup kitchen for years more (helping feed the poor). This makes the song even more powerful.

Great man, great song

The Beatles – Rocky Raccoon Lyrics 14 years ago
I imagine that Rocky picked up gideons bible and put it in his pocket. As he got shot, the bullet hit the bible and saved his life, leaving him with only a scratch.

Also notice the way there is three names to each rival charactor. Lill/McGill/Nancy & Dan/Danny Boy/ Daniel

Richard Hawley – Just Like The Rain Lyrics 14 years ago
About a past love that he simply cannot get out of his mind?

It sounds like he's been lonely since a breakup and can't stop thinking of his ex, so much that he's crying and his tears hit the ground just like the rain.

The mood Hawley can create around a song is phenomenal. I'm running out of superlatives for the man

submissions
Richard Hawley – Roll River Roll Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe this song is about the Sheffield floods, but with a hint of a love song mixed in. The lyrics seem to show affection to both the river itself (that flooded) and to a deceased love who, if the river 'takes him', he will be reunited with. Beautiful (and dark) song

Richard Hawley – Born Under A Bad Sign Lyrics 14 years ago
This song absolutely blows my mind.

I think its about someone who hasn't done a great deal with their life but blames it on bad luck instead of themselves. 'Reading the road signs, oh what a loss' could be that instead of choosing their own path of life, they've just sat there and weighed up the options without taking any action.

The second verse is when the man of the song is older and has the chance to redeem himself (the girl wants him to take her) but the song ends with the man having the choice and yet again not taking any particular path (or maybe he does, but the song doesn't show it).

PS Richard Hawley is God

George Harrison – All Things Must Pass Lyrics 14 years ago
The lyrics are not directed at The Beatles, the beatles actually practised this song during the Get Back sessions (John even changed the lyrics from "The wind can blow those clouds away" to "A mind can blow those clouds away").

The "All Things Must Pass" is taken from Buddha's last words about all composite things will pass away. This amazing song is simply about that idea.

Bob Dylan – Talkin' World War III Blues Lyrics 14 years ago
I think some of you are thinking into this wayyyyyy too much (especially the one trying to crack the Da Vinci Code)

Alexbutterfield -
When I hear the "wonderin who turned the lights on line" its just a joke; there are no lights in a sewer - its a dream and things a hazey.

The parking meter verse one is my favourite, listening to the other verses makes you think something is about to happen, and then he just hits you with "it was a normal day"

The cadillac one is the same idea, its just a joke. No hidden meaning behind it being a Cadillac, how would any car be better than another to drive after a war? Its just a witty/jokey (GREAT) song

Great song, and nice that he could give something back to them.

The Doors – Peace Frog Lyrics 14 years ago
The song has two meanings which interlink.

Peace frog is a theory that you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out. If you put a frog in cold water and then heat it up slowly, it will boil alive. Morrison is saying that's the way policing is going, more and more strict - more like "big brother" way of living (see 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' by George Orwell)

The other meaning is abortion. The way the girl in the song (maybe fictional, maybe not) drives into town and aborts a child is not dissimilar to the way police come in and beat the shit out of people until the problem is gone, and then drive away like nothing has happened (sunlight in their hair!)

Burt Bacharach – I'll Never Fall In Love Again Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a truly amazing song, yet so simple. A guy has been hurt by a girl (again) and is thinking why is it worth it, just to get hurt again? He won't bother falling in love again to save the hurt, look at all the bad things about girls.

He comes around towards the end, knowing that it will happen again...

The Beatles – I'll Follow the Sun Lyrics 14 years ago
The person in the song knows that this relationship isn't going to last. Tomorrow may be the day when she breaks his heart, pushes him too far, or just simply upsets him. Because of this, he's breaking it off now to avoid wasting any more time and so he can keep looking for happiness, but thinks that one day, she'll know, he was the one!

Beautiful song by Macca, he wrote this before Please Please Me was released didn't he?

Bob Dylan – It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry Lyrics 14 years ago
I always thought of it like a traveller explaining to a girl he picked up how great his world is (living on a train and moving from place to place) when secretly he thought it was a bad life that he was stuck in.

After reading the comments on this page I've completely disregarded my original thoughts; it's definately a sexual song.

I think I was just thinking too much about the title (which I still don't have a clue about, unless it was just a random title?)

Bob Dylan – Is Your Love in Vain? Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song, but does it remind anyone else of Procul Harem's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" ?

I think the first two lines explain the song. The singer feels he may love someone, but is not sure if it is just love in a friendship way that he is getting back.

The Doors – Easy Ride Lyrics 14 years ago
One of the best of Soft Parade album.

This is about a distant, upper class girl who Jim is trying to seduce. The easy ride can refer to sex, or the transition to sex (eg the seduction itself). Sheer confidence tells him he will get her, and it will be an easy ride to do so.

Gordon Lightfoot – If You Could Read My Mind Lyrics 14 years ago
Recently heard this song for the first time and I am blown away. One of the greatest melodies ever made.

I've read the song was inspired by his divorce, and from the lyrics I think he's both happy and sad about the divorce. He mentions their differences and why they couldn't work, but also "I just can't get it back" suggests he's tried to, but just can't continue loving her the way he did.

I will definately be buying this album, hoping there are others that are even nearly as great as this.

Richard Hawley – Tonight the Street Are Ours Lyrics 14 years ago
This was the first song I heard by Hawley (quite late I know!) and it's still my favourite.

I don't believe the asbo comment, I think its a love song. Its that when he and his partner are together, if they just let everything go and be hapyp loving each other, they can rule the world (or at least the streets)!

Richard Hawley – I'm Looking For Someone to Find Me Lyrics 14 years ago
Hawley is amazing. I think this is quite self explanatory. The narrator “has no-one to love” but isn’t happy with this. He’s hoping that someone will come and find him, make him love them, and then he doesn’t have to be lonely anymore.

Paul McCartney – Too Many People Lyrics 14 years ago
"You took your lucky break, and broke it in two". Great lyric to describe their fallout.

I agree with most of the posters above, this one is about John but not all Paul's songs are! Also, I do believe the "party lines" to be referencing cocaine.

Not sure about the piss of cake, peice of cake, will have to listen again. I suppose it could be like what they did in the beatles on "Day Tripper" (She's a prick teaser)
