The Tragically Hip – Pretend Lyrics 15 years ago
Obvious link to "The Kids Don't Get It" here as the 2 songs share some of the same lyrics. This song is about being untruthful I think, pretending. But about what??...that's the question. Probably doesn't matter..but I think it is about the writing of the album "World Container" in general. He is pretending to agree with Bob Ross telling him "no one on earth is doing this, (making this type of music) now" and "it's gripping the city and hitting the town" when it really isn't. Maybe not, but that's how I hear it.

Also, there is of course the Lennon reference here - "he's the one who couldn't imagine..." - which implies an anti-war stance.

Yes Psumprus - I see Holocaust written all over this as well and I think it is a reminder to us all that we all live in this small little container that is the world and we are all responsible for it - "we've got our names on it". The World Container is just a bubble that exists around us that makes us all responsible for what happens here IMO. Main thing to take from it - NEVER FORGET what happened there. Gord is afraid that we have.

Maybe Devastator - also maybe a comment on losing yourself to fame just like the rest of them? Just a thought. I think Gord tends to comment on multiple themes, kind of his style IMO, so maybe this could be about both? Or maybe not. Ha ha, isn't that the beauty of Gord??

The Tragically Hip – Locked In The Trunk Of A Car Lyrics 17 years ago
I had the pleasure of meeting Gord in a small Q&A session and one of the questions that was asked of him was what the meaning of this song is. He explained he was trying to get into the mind of a serial killer when he wrote this and that this song is very dark and actually disturbs him which is why he tends not to perform it live. I think that it is naive to believe that any single Hip song has only one meaning/or significance. Most have many I believe. Gord is a brilliant artist - there are very few folks, (if any), that can truly get inside his head in my opinion. I SURE LOVE TRYING THOUGH!
